Re Jordan Dawson - I don't know much about the intricacies of list management but is this a possibility? - we swap our first 2 draft choices with Richmond's. They get our pick 4 and we get their pick 7. In exchange we get their pick 15 and they get our pick 23. We get to keep a top 10 draft choice and offer pick 15 in exchange for Dawson.
Why would Richmond do that unless it guarantees they get the player they want bar none?

Conversely why would Adelaide do that if they have one player way above every other player in the draft if there's even a hint that he may not be there at pick 7?

Much sooner look at 23 and perhaps next years 2nd or 3rd, if we're trading down pick for as you suggest why not keep 7 & 15 and use them in this year's draft that bats deep and quite even in the 1st round after the tier 1 prospects Daicos, Darcy and JHF?

I am concerned that Davies has come out and declared Port have "extreme interest", I certainly doubt he would say this if they weren't in the box seat.

It wouldn't be a good look for him to say this and then he comes to us, in fact, this sounds more like something we would do.

All about making Dawson feel wanted.

They will do well to get Dawson, Finlayson and Burgoyne for pick 16 without dipping into next year's picks.

Didn't Davies a few years back have a crack at us for speaking about other clubs' players?

I don't necessarily agree, I read this completely opposite

What is most telling for me is the comment of having "no meaningful discussuon" yet

Dawson and his manager Dpughty could be in discussion with us while keeping Port warm.

Davies comment of Extreme Interest coukd be a club putting its hard up and saying we are here and interested when your ready to talk

All in saying is that there is different ways in reading the situation.

Davies is a tosser and I don't think he'd show his extreme interest if he wasn't confident, he wouldn't want to be seen as losing a player they wanted to the Crows.

Now that confidence might come from what he knows or it might be that he is an arrogant cocky w***er and thinks they'd get him because they are Port.

Tend to agree, I also think people are kidding themselves he hasn't made his mind up, whether its crows or powa, all camps would know where he is going.

When the Blues took Jack Martin, they had pick 3 in the PSD, with Gold Coast and Mel in front of them. Martin coming from Gold Coast obviously wasn't going to be picked by them, so just had to risk Mel not jumping in front.

If we try to PSD (is that a verb now?) Dawson we run triple that risk with North, Cold Ghost and Cold Pies all ahead of us, probably also with cap space to burn, although I think the Pies might still be a bit tight after last year's squeeze.

If we offer Dawson a massively front ended contract - which we're probably in a space to do so - if he puts those numbers on a PSD nomination form (previously AFL listed PSD nominees can nominate their own salary demand year by year) that might scare the other clubs off.

The nomination form is there for all to see in the draft booklet, which also contains the key dates (but not the FA period)

both pies and Suns are commonly reported to have cap space issues. Doubt either could handle a Jack martinesque $1m season 1 frontload. Roos could, but if he wants to return to SA, I doubt they take him. Hopefully they've got their own PSD target lined up by then.

Zoom, phone calls etc

Meaningful discussions doesn't mean that it needs to be in person

The sell is. The manager discusses their salary expectation and what the club is prepared to give up at trade. If the metrics line up then it's up to the footy dept to land him with the pitch. That part would be the meaningful bit.

Former Gold Coast footy boss Jon Haines says a mix of physical and personal issues were behind Izak Rankine’s form drop-off throughout 2021.

The third pick in the 2018 AFL draft missed his first season through injury before exploding onto the scene in 2020 to quickly become one of the most dangerous small forwards in the competition.

It was hoped that Rankine would be able to build on his form and consistency in 2021, however, that has did not eventuate.

Gerard Healy said he was “astounded” at the 21-year old’s quiet season.

Izak Rankine lit the joint up for a long period of time, we thought he and a few of his teammates were going to take the place by storm, and yet Izak didn’t even finish in the side at the end of the season and struggled to find the footy when he was playing,” Healy told Sportsday.

“For one, I was astounded at his drop-off.”

Haines said the Suns had done a “terrific” job in supporting Rankine, and that the club are confident the livewire will make good on his enormous potential.

“There’s some physical elements to that in terms of his preparation that he’s still learning about and still getting better at,” Haines said.

“From a personal point of view with Izak, without getting into too much detail, he’s come from a really complex background and had a really challenging upbringing in a lot of ways and a lot of people wouldn’t have been exposed to that over the journey.

“I think the club's done a terrific job to wrap their arms around Izac and his family and provide all the support that he needs, over the longer term we’ll see that support bear fruit but there’s certainly some challenges that he’s working through on a daily basis.”

It sounds like we should be keeping well away.

Poor bloke. Times like this he needs support and strength and love around him.

Future 4th rounder thanks

Richmond potentially have a lot of draft capital if CCJ and Chol leave and Talia walks in for free.
I don't see them moving pick 7. Think they combine their 2nds to get another pick in the 1st round with WB being the obvious one.

I would almost consider pick 4 for 12 and Dawson.
12, 23 and Kelly compo plus Dawson wouldn't be the worst if and only if the player at 12 was similar to the player at 4 which is possible this draft.
Almost get Dawson for free.

There's actually a group of players around 23 I would prefer enough not to give up that pick if it could be avoided

If we keep O'Connor and Davis on either list we are saying we rate all our players under 23? Amazing if that's the case but it feels like we should be able to make a call on a couple?

Probably more that most aren't at a stage where we can make a call, either way, or they're best 22, or they're contracted.

Though, it's very hard to see Ben Davis being in Adelaide colours in 2022, even with his late season reprieve.

He also said they don’t start negotiating with players until they know they want to come to the club
Port do the media thing almost impeccably compared to us - his language suggests they are very much in the box sit/it’s a done deal

I dont agree and I didn't recieve it as confident or arrogant

It was completely mixed messages and it depends on where you put the emphasis on the mix messaging

Of course their extremely interested, both clubs are and what are they expected to say

Yet to have meaningful conversations, surely a player doesn't tell his former club that he wants to be traded home without first having meaningful discussions with clubs of interest, or the club that he is interested in joining

After hearing Davies comments I actually walked away feeling more confident about our chases

But I guess we all read things differently

Chris Davies said Jack Watts was an amazing individual and full of praise for him when he announced Watts had retired.

Days after his hit and run accident, and before the public knew about it.

You cant take any stock in anything Davies says.

That's a big risk to take on a guy who is truly elite at the most important and underrated aspect of the game - hitting targets. Not sure it would be wise to be pooncing around whilst you have a competitor who are a far more attractive proposition from a talent POV.

Anyway, I'm sure the bean counters will sort it out.
If Dawson wanted desperately to go to a 2021 high achieving club, he would stay in Sydney. But he wants home. That's not Port Adelaide. He's always been a crows man along with all his family. Although we have probably offered him a good deal to jolt him out of a good club like yours, I can't think of why he would be attracted to Port given his reasons for leaving.
We've copped this in the neck enough times to know how you feel which may get worse once you realise the losing club really is the losing club. Brace yourself is my advice.
One last thing... On this board, we'll hear no such thing as Port being more talented than us. They're at a different stage of the cycle. That's all. But next year and the year after, let's see the direction of our respective cycles.
Thanks for posting here. Come back anytime if you like... just to check how our new recruit is settling in.😋

So you’re telling me there’s a chance? 😅, to be fair I don’t think because he’s a crows supporter that he is guaranteed to come here, I’m pretty sure Fantasia was a crows supporter and polec was also a crows supporter but he chose port. We shall see soon...
