If you duck into a tackle you generally don't have an opportunity to break the tackle.

Whereas the shrug is actually quite effective at breaking tackles to continue play (Selwood actually does it heaps), it should be considered a legitimate option for the player being tackled and the onus is on the tackler to keep the tackle lower.

I don't think anyone's calling for the shrug and duck move to be outlawed, just that it shouldn't be rewarded with a free kick.

Since when he can't? It was high in every era in history. Run along now.
It's the very thing the players and everyone else were told at the start of the year that they would not get a free kick for, as they've caused the high contact by raising the elbow up to make the tackle slide up.

Eagles did well to win, and most of us wanted them to, but the free shouldn't have been paid, just like 95% of the frees Selwood earns for doing the same thing every week.

At least one more week of Priddis' awesome hair. He's actually a very handsome man. When he kicked that goal I got a bit wet in my trouser area. I didn't even know he could kick let alone kick goals

The arm lift the knee drop was maybe there , the opponents hand around his neck above the shoulder was also there. You can argue til the cows come home . It was a free kick.
But anyone who has read any stuff I put on here would know that I hate the knee drop shoulder drop, I hate it, Selwood has made a skill out of it. I've said that before, like almost he practices it. It has become a "thing to do" in football, even Poppy does it on occasion, where as Selwood does it out of habit like he can't help it!
Unfortunately that free was there, before the shoulder drop arm lift, it was already high, but when its accidental or incidental in the motion of the game, and bodies moving forward, it has to be asked , why can't the umpires use their discretion. They don't they use the rule as they see it and call it.And some rules the question needs asking , WHY ARE THEY EVEN THERE!Paddy Ryder , didn't announce his intent to be the nominated ruckman in the Eagles forward line, well the ump asked loudly you can hear it, Paddy didn't and then went up , and according to the rule, he has broken it, that is to nominate to ruck, the rule an absolutely stupid rule. WHY IS IT EVEN THERE. Cost Port a goal , much the same as the disgraceful touched goal that Port was awarded, that WAS TOUCHED. Say what you like , THAT WAS TOUCHED . So for me the eagles won by 8 points not 2.
Adding to my comments on this weekend , I 'd say that perhaps Richmond and Adelaide looked like real hard core winners, Sydney had NO OPPOSITION , so they need to gear up for next week on the MCG . Geelong will be very very nasty.
Also I would say that the game for finals football has stepped backwards in standard, both Eagles , Port , GWS and Essendon too early as I call them all were below standard, unless GWS pull their finger out or Geelong turn themselves around, Tigers and Crows for the GF. WATCHED TWO TERRIBLE GAMES TODAY.

Well played west coast, took their chances & kicked straight. Port blew their chances in front of goal & twice celebrated too early. I feel like going down and showing our forwards how to kick at goal because the goal kicking is complete shit. Selectors went for green young players over experience which is odd at this time of year and against a very experienced team

Dermie absolutely destroyed Eddie in that debate on the free kick. Interesting that Jordan Lewis said it was his pet hate (like a lot of us) and mentioned this exact action was shown in the umpiring video in the pre season before biting his tongue a bit. Jordan Lewis might be a knob in his own right on the field, but there's definitely players out there that hate it as much as us.

The good news is that it will probably lead to the Selwood arm raise FINALLY being out of the game in 2018. I also wanted WCE to win and it added to the drama of an incredible game. You can't kick a footy better than Shuey did under any greater pressure (well apart from a Grand Final). So holistically I'm glad the free was paid. Port fans might see it differently though!
