Were you excited by the skill level of the game?
Excited at a close finish where neither team could crack 60 points?
Ending in a draw doesn't make it a classic or even exciting.
And you want me to get excited at the prospect of 88,000 Richmond and Carlton fans congregating?
here is some news for you Mr COLA - 90,000 people did get excited at the prospect of Richmond and Carlton fans congregating - you wouldn't get 90K people in Shitney congregating about anything except an auction for a shack in in farctown. No one cares about your sour puss jealousy - but thanks for the larfs.

You mean the commentators noticed it once? I was flicking between the NRL (had a guest) and this and saw it constantly, again. Every time I watch the Tiges.
Do we need another raft of rule changes to stop the Tigers you think?

In theory, yes.

But I'd prefer all clubs had a chance to be in the season Opener over time, so some teams would have to wait for years (or decades).
And apart from last year its been dominated by this snoozefest. Whoever does the programming at HQ is clearly a Blues fan. Prime times been dominated by a horror show in Navy for the last decade. At least a GF replay should have some interesting story lines - the chance of redemption, did injuries make a difference, evening up perceived wrongs from the game (sorry, thats so last century, no "evening the score" any more), and likely a change of faces.

Listen dishlicker - remember your GF replay against Melbourne- THAT was a snoozefest just like the GF was - I think the AFl understand the difference between minnow CLubs being herded into fake GF's and big Clubs bringing the crowds back in - wakey wakey - no one cares about Bevo and his mutts.

Got to love Taranto for fantasy/punting.
18 kicks and I think maybe 1 of them went to a team mate. And even that was accidental.
Did not give a **** where the ball went, as long as he got a kick

Yep, he won't get near it against half decent teams.
Agree. Early days we all know but they looked like two teams battling for 9th to 12th.
Pretty poor skill level all over the field and the Carlton "Twin Giants" were held pretty comfortably. Carlton won't fire unless they both shine.
Richmond are so very very reliant on Lynch. If he goes down, so will they.

Maybe in terms of quality, but not likely to get much more than 70000 for Geel v Coll on a Thurs night, if that.

Surely crowd trumps quality for the season-opener?!
AFL has run with that for the last decade or so.

Given the game becomes more and more about TV rights/read $, you would think spectacle > crowd numbers.

BUT it will always be 2 VIC Teams on the Thursday, 2 more on the Friday because 'tradition'.

Another nuffiy surprised that teams aren't going to show their best in the first round of a season - what is it - your first year of watching AFL?

Prime time over the last decade? Obviously been sucking on one too many dishwasher tablets as I think 90% of our games have been Sunday graveyard shifts (probably deserved). Glad the Bullfrogs put up a great performance last year as first game of the round in front of their couple thousand fans that showed up. Guess Bevo's presser was entertaining at least.

Taranto is the king of the hack kick.

Yes, it's very easy to get excited at a close finish where neither team could crack 60 points.

Cumberland or Ryan could come in.
Not as good as Lynch but both could play a great role.

Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer have all had attendances north of 100,000 at Homebush (pre reconfiguration down to 83,500 seats capacity)

The largest AFL attendance outside of Victoria is still Sydney vs Collingwood north of 72,000

Bet yeah, whatevs

It’s not understandable imo. They’ve played in big games with big crowds.
Rookie errors over and over. Same old Carlton.

They may have played in some big games but they haven't won them and haven't been to the finals for a decade. Look at last game last year when they just failed against the Pies. Look at this game V Richmond where they couldn't get home despite the Tiges being wasteful all game...massive games, huge crowds but they don't win. Still spooked by the finishing line in the real tests.

Doesn't matter how many practice matches you've played, how fine tuned you are, teams are still going to be brushing off the cobwebs in the first official game of the season.
And, regardless of the quality of the game and the scores, close finishes like that last night are always exciting, certainly for the supporters of the clubs involved.
