In theory, yes.

But I'd prefer all clubs had a chance to be in the season Opener over time, so some teams would have to wait for years (or decades).

And apart from last year its been dominated by this snoozefest. Whoever does the programming at HQ is clearly a Blues fan. Prime times been dominated by a horror show in Navy for the last decade. At least a GF replay should have some interesting story lines - the chance of redemption, did injuries make a difference, evening up perceived wrongs from the game (sorry, thats so last century, no "evening the score" any more), and likely a change of faces.

Listen dishlicker - remember your GF replay against Melbourne- THAT was a snoozefest just like the GF was - I think the AFl understand the difference between minnow CLubs being herded into fake GF's and big Clubs bringing the crowds back in - wakey wakey - no one cares about Bevo and his mutts.

AFL has run with that for the last decade or so.

Given the game becomes more and more about TV rights/read $, you would think spectacle > crowd numbers.

BUT it will always be 2 VIC Teams on the Thursday, 2 more on the Friday because 'tradition'.

Prime time over the last decade? Obviously been sucking on one too many dishwasher tablets as I think 90% of our games have been Sunday graveyard shifts (probably deserved). Glad the Bullfrogs put up a great performance last year as first game of the round in front of their couple thousand fans that showed up. Guess Bevo's presser was entertaining at least.

Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer have all had attendances north of 100,000 at Homebush (pre reconfiguration down to 83,500 seats capacity)

The largest AFL attendance outside of Victoria is still Sydney vs Collingwood north of 72,000

It’s not understandable imo. They’ve played in big games with big crowds.
Rookie errors over and over. Same old Carlton.

They may have played in some big games but they haven't won them and haven't been to the finals for a decade. Look at last game last year when they just failed against the Pies. Look at this game V Richmond where they couldn't get home despite the Tiges being wasteful all game...massive games, huge crowds but they don't win. Still spooked by the finishing line in the real tests.

Doesn't matter how many practice matches you've played, how fine tuned you are, teams are still going to be brushing off the cobwebs in the first official game of the season.
And, regardless of the quality of the game and the scores, close finishes like that last night are always exciting, certainly for the supporters of the clubs involved.
