There are 2 sides to the goal square from the behinds side he is free to use.

You cant run directly behind a player who took a mark. You have to go around.

This is the same.

Its basic rules of the game.

Players run out past the defender through the middle every game.

Sicily was too quick to play on.

You can even see from Sicily's reaction that he knew he had ****ed up.

It was a freak occurrence and Sicily knew he had ****ed it by the look on his face.

I think it is like someone taking a mark and playing on quickly while a player is clearing out behind you
West had taken 7-8 steps towards Sicily while he was still in the goal square with no play on called, directly running at the player with the ball and ending up less than a step away.

You can't do that when someone has marked it around the ground so you can't do it here either

West shouldnt have been in the goal square when Sicily was with the ball.

Thats meant to be a 50m penalty.

But we know full well the umpires dont know the rules.
Umpires usually hold up the play until the players who have fallen over behind the goalsquare have cleared out, bizarre umpiring.

Yes.
He wouldnt have expected a tackle coming from the protected zone and most likely figured its not worth explaining the rules to umpires because they dont have the mental capacity.

Players also run within the protected zone of marks and free kicks and are never pinged. But the rule does still exist. We just dont have enough umpires on the field to be able to enforce them.

I guess.
