Yeah bloudy oath it would.. Not only would it attract more good footy players here, it would also keep a lot more for longer periods of time.. How often do you see a recruit come for 1 or 2 years and head off somewhere else, usually back 2 where they are from.. If there was a more supporter base and comradery in each club i think you'd see recruits enjoy there time a lot more, therefore play many more games for there respective club.. Getting recruits is the easy part.. getting them to stay is harder

I dont think that there'll be any decent increase in crowds until the Clubs & the League start to work together. At the moment, all the clubs are trying their own marketing techniques and the League is doing what it can with what its got.

I dont know what you guys think but I think this league could benefit in a complete overhaul in structure. This'll probably start an uproar, but i reckon a good idea is a licensing system whereby each club needs to fulfill a series of criteria to be involved with AFL Canberra. Things like marketing, junior development then become a requirement, not just an off the cuff, splatter gun approach. That way the League has the abilitly to fine clubs if they're not doing the right thing.

I dont know if we have the right people in place, or the financial backing to achieve something like this. I'd be interested to hear others' thoughts though.

We're already struggling fielding 5 canberra sides in the comp. This would wipe out Tuggeranong on funding alone. You'd be left with 4 teams and the swans.

The league really needs to get someone externally to come in with a fresh pair of eyes to look over things. AFL Canberra should check out how the MPNFL do things - they manage 32 teams over 3 comps and the way it is run is impeccable, I am sure they could teach them a thing or 2 about running a successful large competition.

Great idea! A system like the A-league (i know its a national comp and soccer) where the teams all have a certain structure would be a good start. From what i can understand, the A league all have the same organisational, team and marketing structure that is approved by the league itself. It's designed so that the league has ultimate control. This would balance the league out (eventually) AND give a wholelistic approach to marketing the game. If the league could attract another team and float tuggeranong then you could definitely implement something like this. But the Swans would have to be an exception becuase they have their own structure:D

Another problem you have to deal with is the fact that AFL canberra is, at best, a semi professional competition, so there is only so much control that the league can impose on the clubs.

It is rumoured here in Mildura that Brett Knowles will be coaching a local side (Mildura) How does he go??
Did he get the sack from his last coaching job?

Hillite, Brett Knowles is certainly a quality player - this is obvious to anyone who cares to watch him play. As for coaching; you would have to rely on what some of the old Ainslie players have to say... some respected him and some had less respect. I can say as an outsider looking in at Belconnen (where he is/was an assistant), that he seems to have the respect of his peers.

As someone who retired from all coaching roles this year with an opposition club, all I can say is: "Thanks for coming, sad to see you go... NOT":D:D
It will be hard for Belconnen to replace a player of that quality if he is in fact leaving. FIM, care to comment???

One could point to his record at Ainslie where he got the ass pretty quick after a player exodus. Or one could point to his fantastic record in finals football at any club he has played at. Definitely a quality pickup. I guess mahary getting the job for another two years really got his panties in a twist if this rumour is true.

He can no doubt play, but I think his lack of a personality and minimal social skills really hurt him as a coach...

Just thought i would let everyone know what eastlake are up to again

over the weekend got the word that they have alighned with the AFL Canberra Board to once again to try and infiltrate the vally with junior development officers and the such. They also require that the two junior teams (lions + bulldogs) use the facilities at the caldwell club (as i know, they both have running sponsarship with the tugg southern cross club)

from what i know both junior teams have very good numbers and several teams made finals this year.

in my opinion i think it shows a sign of disrespect to interfere with the three clubs. the senior club has just got back on its feet and the two junior clubs are running smoothly.

obvioulsy these are not all the details but i would like to get everyones opinion on this issue

Bk is one of the best blokes at the club. Maybe it came down to how comfortable he was at Ainsle or the pressure the club may or may not have put on him to make the team perform, but since he has been at Belconnen i reckon he has plenty of character about him. Always willing to help out younger blokes with stuff and when it does come time for a bit of socializing he is always there.

BK top bloke:thumbsu:

Personally i don't like what eastlake do in the valley. Tuggeranong kids have been poached for years. Eastlake get the Marist kids aswell, who usually are tugeranong or weston creek juniors originaly

Couldn't agree more. It's rubbish that Eastlake can come in and poach young talent like that, especially now that Tuggers is starting to look as though they can become a stronger club...

It may well get interesting for eastlake down the valley way with murrumbidgee who have now formed a affilation with the wild cats juniors. It is hoped that the bidgee boys will have under 18 in 09 so i hope the lakers deal dosn't damage that deal .
The bidgee wildcats deal maybe the best hope of introducing another team in actafl in the not to distant future.:thumbsu:

says the bloke whose side is ripping the kids out of Jets zone and trying to buy them off with some blankets and beads. And then tried to rip into the Belconnen zone like Kaleen and Giralang to get their kids out of there.

No offence taken but I believe any full forward who backs his own ability has a bit of show pony about them. Its what makes them dangerous.

To answer your questions let me say that the crowds I was quoted was not what was at games.....far from it. Did I care...I am still here!

The lack of support was not the reason I asked for a pay rise. I think I have covered this but I will say it straight. I kicked 100+ goals in my first year after missing 8 games through injury and thought my year warranted an increase. I asked for an extra $50 per game. In 1998 my work took me back to Adelaide and the club was kind enough to fly me back and forth to continue playing so to assist I took a $100 a game pay cut. That year I kicked the 90 odd you refer too, played in a premiership and took out the Jezza on GF day. I then asked for another pay increase after that season. The only 2 seasons ever in my 11 year 1st grade career I thought I had the right to at least pose the question. I only asked if i felt it was deserved.

As far as the Tigers and their supporters go?? It has been mentioned many times that the Tigers is a family club and I can honestly say without hesitation that most players, new or old, would know and talk to most of the supporters. Before games, after games, at the club. Its that sort of place. Everyone is an equal at the club and no-one gets better treatment regardless of the role that they play.

A truely special place to be involved with.

A Bit High in reponse to your "best of/worst of pole" i will put a vote forward for you being the worst poster on this website. this is an example of your crappy posting of how good you were in your day. We like how you make out you weren't a mercenary but most people on this website would find it hard to beleive that you didn't chase money no matter how you paint a halo on yourself.
somehow you turn a story of how we get better crowds into how YOU won a "JEZZA". for this crappy, repetitive, posting about your "jezza" i vote for you. worst poster 08

I really hope that was a joke :p

On the topic of poaching- can anyone name some players that have been poached as juniors (u18's) that have gone on to be successfull/will be successfull (im thinking last 8-10 years, still playing, preferably 1st grade).
Name who they came from and where they went to. Tuggers> marist> eastlake kids shouldnt count unless they have a strong case.

im not having a go at queanbeyan for paoching players as it takes two to tango.

both the dickinson boys are from the tugg bulldogs. several other queanbeyan boys such as iriwn and p.cambell are also tugg boys. simpson and tutt from tugg went to aisnlie a couple of years ago. gumly was at WC before going to eastlake. thats all i can think of.

the problem with the whole marist easklate thing is that tugg lion/bulldogs/wc attend marist as a school and when the time comes for marist to put in a team the students must play for the age group/team/sport that they currently are playing in. then of course they all head off to eastlake. There are several players such and williams haywood and dean who are in the same boat but on the WC side of things.

maybe the marist boys will have the opportunity to represent at a higher level. has anyone heard that Marist "old boys" will be going into the reserve grade comp? i heard it from an unconfirmed source. might be old news.
