I agree with what you've said here. So what's the point of just giving these clubs early picks if they aren't going to get the rest of the processes right? Especially when these picks are no guarantee to be any better than players taken later in the draft. Even the no.1 pick has rarely gone on to be the best player of his draft year in hindsight. One draft pick is such an insignificant piece of the overall puzzle. This is why I object to the current draft, because it doesn't do anything to address the myriad other factors that contribute to a successful footy club.

And the suggestion in this thread is change for changes sake.

Get rid of priority picks, that's all we need.

That should then be enough to rotate picks around eventually anyway.

No it's not. It would totally eliminate the potential of tanking and any talk of it (which retaining the current reverse order draft won't do) and force perennially inept clubs to start addressing the other areas that they've fallen behind in. It will also remove this welfare mentality that seems to pervade some clubs and supporters. It will also make success by any club more worthy of merit than it is now. Do you really think anybody is going to respect Carlton if they win a flag in the next 20 years? Any club that couldn't be competitive under a system with equal access to the playing talent with the salary cap in place simply isn't run well enough to deserve being in what is supposedly our code's premier competition.

Your club was up by 7 goals against Richmond in Round 21 2005 but somehow managed to lose the game. If you had've won that game you wouldn't have got picks 3 and 6. You should be disgusted with what Clarkson did! Tanker! Cheater!

That is a completely different issue. I have said numerous times that getting 2 & 5 out of a disastrous season was a reward I was happy to take. While I didn’t want my club to tank the game I also said that I wasn’t too upset at losing to North Melbourne when they kicked 4 late goals. When talking about PP’s I said numerous times when I am not hell bent on winning round 22 there is something wrong.

None of that means support for tanking, although I have no doubt some supporters of every club would support their team tanking for picks. Again, that is different to clubs doing it.

all teams in the same situation would have done the same thing, l would expect the demons to do it if we knew Judd was heading back to Melbourne, its just the denial by Ratten and Swan and the AFL 'leaders' thats shytes me

"Tanked" is just a colloquial way of saying 'we threw games', which is about as serious an offence as there is in professional sports. You should have the book thrown at you otherwise I'm losing respect for the AFL so badly right now.
