FTA-TV AFL easily beats NRL on Friday night

I can see the QLD audience improving steadily from next year as the GCS fire up.

In Sydney? Even with the GWS... I think it's going to be a massive slog to see substantial improvements.

Off-topic, but do the NRL count SoO games in the total yearly viewership? That's ludicrous.

http://www.lions.com.au/portals/0/lions/newsletters/m091113.html

This some stats on how the Lions are fairing ratings and attendance wise at the moment. One stat in particular is that Lions game draw lower ratings than the QLD NRL teams (Cowboys,Titans,Broncos), the NRL footy show, and the Sunday Roast. Over time, I hope the ratings improve steadily but QLD will be league heartland always but AFL will grow a larger niche over time with GC Suns.

Easy win for the AFL Grand Final (either of them) over the NRL Grand Final:

That's quite amazing that Sydney number, the AFL GF was much better to watch last week. There was also talk that Sydney people had been put off by the draw.

re NRL number, yes given its a friendly timeslot and it was LIVE in Melbourne, no Storm (parochial) means the huffing and puffing by NRL fans (not so much Auckmel but elsewhere) that they will run over the AFL nationally seems to be under question. ;)

wow all sydney game, in prime time and no real competition. I think its also funny that they got less people for the presentations where the afl got more for some reason - both weeks.

As usual we have to wait for the regionals to come in to balance things out for the Rl apologists here.

re presentations, remember it is a much shorter TV program, therefore the average will be higher compared to a 3 hour game.

Speaking as a league fan I knew the AFL GF would outrate the NRL grand final on both occasions. The good news for the NRL in Perth the ratings increased compare to last year but it's still small but a good base to work off when a Perth team come in soon I hope.

Knowing News Limited they add in regional just to be competitive with the AFL grand finals.

They'll just tell you that Sydney people are more open minded and typical Victorians won't give anything else a chance :D

I'd love to see the Morons Unlimited view of all this, but I'm far too scared

Sydney Morning Herald today - about rugby league:
The game has evolved into the most exciting and telegenic of the four major football codes in Australia. It is a 21st-century spectacle. It needed to be.

The favourite game among young males, by far, is video games. They are fast, furious, interactive and usually brutal. These games have changed the attention spans of young people, and football needs to adapt to the tempo of the video age. The NRL has adapted, becoming more manic, and is now the most-watched sport on Australian TV.

Paul Sheehan's view from Sydney. I think the AFL can go even better as a TV spectacle, much more room to improve. I liked the skycam, we need a network of these mobile aerial cameras around the ground. As technology improves, cost-benefit,etc, it will happen.

No truer test than last weekend of neutral GF's. Both games were one sided after half time.

Big tick for the AFL's TV rights pitch.

In any case no-one should claim NSW and QLD for AFL, but we have a bigger share than RL has of Vic, SA, WA. We have a more 'national' game and two new teams coming from surprise surprise NSW and QLD. ;)

"Melbourne the sporting capital of the world :D"
haha it's pretty funny. Also claim that it's a good rating because it went up in 3 cities and only went down in melbourne

SATURDAY'S AFL Grand Final has sunk the boot into Sunday's NRL Grand Final, according to figures released today.

OzTAM results show that Channel 7’s telecast of the Collingwood v St Kilda re-match averaged 2.683 million viewers across Australia’s five capital cities.

The AFL result was well up on Nine’s NRL Grand Final. The Dragons v Roosters clash averaged 2.091 million viewers.

The AFL Grand Final re-match won out over the NRL because it had a lot of viewers across all five cities – a whopping 1.311 million in Melbourne, 405,000 in Sydney, 375,000 in Brisbane, 274,000 in Adelaide and 314,000 in Perth.

The NRL Grand Final scored monster ratings in Sydney and Brisbane (1.127 million and 635,000 respectively) but was ignored by other cities. Only 221,000 Melbourne viewers tuned in. Adelaide had 33,000 and Perth 75,000.

Melbourne media story

...National Rugby League grand final on Nine, which was the top program of yesterday with 2.091 million viewers in metropolitan centres, according to preliminary OzTAM ratings.

On Saturday the AFL grand final re-match between Collingwood and St Kilda on Seven was viewed by an average of 2.683m.

But the top sporting event of the year was the presentation following the tied AFL grand final last week, which attracted an audience of 3.35m in the five capital cities - more than the match itself (2.76m).

But what about the regionals???????????????????????????????:mad::thumbsdown:

Obviously the AFL and Adolph Demetriou paid off the Australian for this news article! Aerial Ping Pong and its massive war chest! Makes me sooo mad!!!:mad:

Also they didn't factor in the fact that many NRL people watch TV in large groups!!! Therefore, more people were watching the NRL than the AFL! Because NRL fans have a tradition of watching the game in groups and gayfl'rs don't!!!

Once our commission gets up and running we'll run right over the top of AFL with ratings! :thumbsu:

Our product is much more enjoyable because NSW and Qld make up over 60%... no.... 70% of Australia's population and eclipses flogball in popularity. OBVIOUSLY the AFL (Aka Fumbleball) skews their ratings and crowd figures!  :mad:

Note: These are genuine (Main) arguments from NRL supporters. It has to be seen to be believed.

Now you want to look at the AFL ratings into Sydney, Hoops? Where were you when the thread started back in July? Not a good look to come in now and gloat when you've avoided the Sydney ratings like the plague right through this whole debate.

Unlike you though, I wont hide until the figures suit my agenda.

The figures for Sydney are fine. In fact I'm pretty sure the AFL grand final rates pretty well into Sydney. It did last week so it's pretty much par for the course.

The Rugby league numbers are hard to judge. Obviously they were never going to be as good if the Storm were playing, but once again and given the clear fact the game gets abysmal coverage here, Melbourne has shown they'll watch Rugby league if given the opportunity even if it's two Sydney teams playing off in the Grand Final.

Hopefully next year we'll see more FTA coverage and Vics will get to see more of the game rather than just the token 4 or 5 games they get now and those numbers will continue to grow into the future.

Thank god for the disclaimer. I nearly replied to this :)

The AFL ratings now should reflect exactly what NRL spruikers like to do: lump its two Friday night games as one.

Therefore, can someone please add the numbers up for the 2010 AFL Grand Finals (plural)?

Haha thought about that...

Anyway you view it, apples for apples AFL kicks NRLs arse :

Funny thing is they showcase their Grand Final on Sunday arvo which is way better as a viewing time than Sat just after noon

Yet still they get ripped a new one :D

Tradition time >>> Prime time

I think the ratings are indicative of the popularity of the respective codes, if RL did not have SOO, they would be in a bit more trouble, although both codes are a absolute mile in front of the other two football codes. (Soccer and RU)

No wonder the AFL refuses to have night finals.

Given that they have a heap more product and then run around telling anyone who'll listen that League is the most watched sport on TV, this is exactly what we should do.

Fair's fair ;)
