FTA-TV AFL easily beats NRL on Friday night

Live it up for 2 days until the regionals are out :thumbsu: :D

Seeing as Canberra are a regional team, the ratings in regional NSW alone could top 500k.

You need to get over this regional crap, until the Tasmania, WA/SA regional figures are counted, its not a fair fight when it comes to regional ratings. Not to mention that the'll need at least 400,000 regionals to turn on just to beat the afls metro figures

Even without them, 942k with only decent coverage in 2 states is outstanding.

30k after midnight in Melbourne further proves how much the game is growing on people.

I won't even bother with the AFL ratings in NSW and QLD as clearly noone wants to debate the issue or make suggestions to improve them.

Lasts nights game might not have been the greatest contest given Collingwood were so bloody good, but the atmosphere was sensational and the game was played at a breathtaking pace. Somehow the AFL needs to bottle this and showcase it in both states.

How? I don't pretend to know all the answers, but I'll put forward one suggestion. Education. I thought the game was shit for a long time. The more I became educated about it, the better it was to watch and understand.

Maybe the AFL should put 30 second promos explaining the game and its laws. Does this happen already? Jeff Gieschen does something similar on SEN and I find it very helpful.

Do any of the current crop of umpires come from the Northern states? Chelsea Roffey was born in SA but raised in Brisbane. I couldn't think of a better face to put out in front of the public. I'm willing to wager the young blokes would like it too.

So there ya go, a couple of suggestions from me, what about you?

Dont really care, but never thought it would be any different.

Thought the ratings would be better in Brisbane for the AFL, thought their was a much stronger AFL culture in Brisbane.

Anyone with an AFL culture was watching it live on Main Event at 7:30

AFL fans in QLD & NSW are lucky to have main event to watch AFL live. Compare to NRL fans in WA/SA/VIC are forced to midnight screenings with no alternatives.

Can you provide some rating numbers for previous AFL on main event?

No I can't and If someone could pull some main event figures I'm quiet confident they would be enough to put some egg on these league trolls faces.

Ive lived and played footy in Brisbane, playing footy on a sat who in their right mind is gunna wait up till midnight to watch some footy the night before a game and alot of QLD NSW afl viewers are in the same bout..

You're right who would stay up til midnight to watch games. I know, Melbourne Storm fans in Melbourne. The Storm get shafted in there own state, yet coverage of AFL is live between non QLD/NSW states through main event.AFL fans should be happy to have such luxury.

p.s:I wish there be live coverage for all sports around Australia sick of any form of delayed coverage.

Then you go and on and debate it, even though it is off topic. You introduced NSW and QLD ratings for AFL as a diversion from the fact that AFL easily out rates the NRL on most occasions nationally.

Take Friday night. ;)

This thread was started due to the hubris around Friday night ratings. The fact that the NRL runs two different games in two cities needed exposure. The NRL tries very hard to 'win' the ratings.

Interesting to note, the Brisbane ratings for the NRL final were much lower than the combined Adel & Perth ratings for AFL, given none of their teams were playing. This is another structural advantage the AFL has over the NRL in its 5 captial city market - the one that counts for TV execs.

The regionals are irrelevant to TV rights.

However, GC double counted, no WA or SA regional (which would heavily favour the AFL) means these numbers are self serving for the NRLers only. Keeps the forumites in their delusional state.

Also of interest are the peak numbers. One million in Melbourne for AFL, 1.8m nationally.

Ironic that ThinkTV is unable to add Ch 10 and OneHD. Think about it. ;)

And lets not forget Tasmania, which is counted in the regional ratings (RTAM) but no one can find public data posted anywhere. The regional data freely available excludes Tasmania for some reason. It is collected by AGB Nielson though, and uses the modern tech apparently (peopleometers or whatever they are) These are being introduced to WA regional survery persons next year as well. No idea about the SA ones.

Yes, that did look a bit silly once I read it again. Oh well.

It's not off topic. There is nothing wrong with expanding or diversifying a thread on ratings if it involves ratings. However, I certainly understand why you continue to divert away from it.

Nope, that's just your continued paranoia. I'm comfortable with the NRL ratings on a friday night into NSW and QLD, and the midnight ratings into Melbourne win or lose. Rugby league has some real room to move on a friday night, so it's not all doom and gloom.

Take it indeed. What a night. Great win, great atmosphere, I loved it. Sadly though, no chance of a GF ticket which I think sucks badly.

You've done well. What are we up to now? I think it's about 20 pages which is good exposure.

So tell me, is there any merit at all in my suggestions?

Yes, it would be good of splex to acknowledge this mistake regarding the 10/one ratings.( although not his) the link was above and it was quite clear.

Another 200k would no doubt propell the WB/Stk game way up the ratings ladder.

Where did you get peak numbers from ?.

I was just stating what was listed in the link but it does seem that the one ratings are missing.

Hardly, I'm on record as saying in this thread I think the Swans ratings for its final are fine. The peak audience was 200,000. On a night with competition from traditional Sydney sports such as RL and RU it did well. AFL may have been played for 25 plus years, but its still only 1 team v 9 NRL teams, playing once a fortnight.

I agree understanding the game play is important for novice AFL fans, that is why a second team will help. More AFL games to see live where you can understand how it all gels. TV does not cover it adequately.

You are going down a very dark path  - yes great atmosphere from the Collingwood ferals.

As above.

You really need to learn the quote thingy.

You put [ then AuckMel=quote followed by this ]

Then you go [ /quote ] Obviously all the ['s and ]'s to next to the first and last letter.

To multi quote thats 2 or 3 posts you click on the +" which is in between the Quote and Quick options.

The the one figures include both oneHD (1) and one digital (11)??

How do we know regionals exclude tas?

How do we know how much of SA is included as adelaide?

Why hasn't WA been added to regionals yet?

because the site information where they get these figures from clearly says regionals include vic, nsw, qld and exclude tasmania. AGB Nielson says that SA regionals and WA regionals are still on an old fashioned diary instead of the fancy modern measuring gear elsewhere.
