AFL hard ball almost turned World Cup bid into a $45m non-event

I think he was just giving an honest statement, people can give those you know ;) He just stated how close the bid came to not being pushed through and how hard himself and the Australian bid team had to work to make this bid happen. I don't think people appreciate the work that's been done for the bid and to me that statement shows "hey FIFA look, nobody had to fight more than us to make this happen, therefore nobody really deserves it/has worked harder than us for it, i.e COME PLAY!!" :thumbsu: We have fought for football for a long long time and it's about time that the football world showed us some appreciation and helped us in developing the game.

Blaming the AFL in the event of the bis failing is a cop-out

There has been sone finger pointing at the AFL, but really most realise the AFL had nothing to with the bid failing.

FIFA wanted a legacy - the Middle East a much bigger prize than remote Australia.

and if the bribery allegations are true, again nothing to do wtih the AFL would have changed that.

At the end of the day, soccer pushed its luck from a tiny staging point in Australia.

Summed it up. In hindsight, there is nothing that we could have done to win this bid. Qatar just played the game better and have a lot more money to throw around. All of the argy bargy witht the AFL/NRL really finished months ago when the MOU was signed. Consequently the traffic on this board also dried up for a while.

Yeah. Even the argy bargy showed the country is not a good fit for the WC during the winter football code seasons.

Curious to see if FIFA tries to convince the EPL to move their season to accomodate a winter (Jan) WC in Qatar as mooted. I wonder if the EPL will object? ;)

It will be a big shitfight. I still want to see Qatar prove their concept of air-conditioning a stadium that doesn't have a roof. They promised it, lets see if it works.

Haven't heard that one before. Thought it was June/July or no dice.

It's almost nailed on that they will.

Clubs complain when they lose players to the Cup of African Nations...how are they going to feel when anywhere from a quarter to all their squad will go walkabout in the new year?

Sky would also tell them to get f****d

Where are they going to move it to? The season virtually never ends. Euro, season, Confed Cup, season, WC.

Surely the EPL will gladly close down its season for a few weeks to help another event out. Its only for 6 weeks for a once in a life time opportunity to have a world cup somewhere. The EPL's demands to run their season with minimum disruption is selfish and clearly 'excessive'.

I wonder if they'd be so 'arrogant' as to seek compensation?? so many of their clubs are riddled by massive debt - - too great an interruption could put some at jeopardy,.........ah, but then, with P&R, they can just promote more clubs to take their place.

It isn't just the EPL you fool it is 80% of the world's football leagues that run on the international football calendar. If it was only one league that was interrupted then sure, it wouldn't have been an issue.

What will likely happen is all of the star players will boycott Qatar 2022 and play for their clubs if it is held in January, which is very unlikely to happen.

but dont you UNDERSTAND wc2022OZ? its the WORLD CUP? the freaking WORLD CUP! Everything must work around it EVERYTHING!!! So what if it wrecks a few seasons? thats just being incredibly small minded and selfish. Its just for a few weeks for the once in a life time opportunity to hold the WC somewhere!. A few weeks in Qatar is all were asking for. IF your going to play HARD BALL about it, we might have to abandon it; and then YOU will be to blame.. YOU - do you hear me? IT WILL BE YOUR FAULT!
