What a waste of time the first stage is for big guns in AFC. They really should have all the shitters playing each other in a 10 team league with the top 2 going through to the next stage.
I'd support a bit of a "play in" situation.
The play everyone home and away group phase here isn't adding much for the first round.
The teams that played at the last world cup have a collective record of 26W 4D 0L to this point of the campaign.
You could easily take the top 9 and give them a bye to the 2nd phase (3 groups of 6) and let the rest square up for the other 9 spots.
If you want content you could have a something like the AFC nations league - let the best teams play each other while the other qualifiers are happening in the first phase
Agree, although it’s probably better than useless friendlies for us against Jamaica or Nigeria at Craven Cottage.
