The Story so far
invincible.jpg

Another year, another season at the top for Geelong. Searching for a fourth Grand Final apperance and third Premiership in four years, even the occasional loss no longer shatters the air of invincibility about this team. A year older certainly, starting to look a little rusty around the bows and stern, and a weapon or two in need of calibration, but a look beneath the decks quickly sets you straight on just how well the engine room is still running.

For Adelaide, the story is a little different. After the retirement of some old stalwarts, a new breed was conceived to work alongside the last of the old brigade, powerful and advanced. Sadly, it all went wrong. Strikes on the docks? Failure to properly integrate systems? Who knows for certain, but while it still may become one of the most powerful units around in the next season or two, right now they're still a few systems short of battle ready.

Key Players

Adelaide

Tippett shoots for goal at Subiaco
Kurt Tippett
Starting to show some real form in recent weeks, Kurt Tippett is the battleship of the Crows forward line; an immense man, he has what is quite possibly the only weapon that can trouble Scarlett - height and reach. While the battlecruiser of Taylor Walker, and the Cruiser Squadron of Henderson and Dangerfield may lead a jaunty dance amongst their opposite numbers, Tippett putting scores on the board and forcing Scarlett to abandon his rebounding will be far more decisive.

okcity_emergency_blow.jpg

Thompson emerges from beneath the pack to fire off a handball
Scott Thompson
The prime mover at the heart of the Adelaide midfield, after an injury-dogged start to the season Thompson has managed to put that behind him and has ceased running silent and deep. That he no longer has to shoulder the entire burden himself, with the growing form of Reilly and Doughty, the raw power of Dangerfield and the sudden but welcome addition of young grunt Rory Sloane, has also freed Thompson up and given him enough space to start extracting the ball in his classy way. Now comes the test - can he keep the form up, and have an impact on the game, against the best midfield in the business, while wearing the attention of the leagues second best tagger, the current mayor and future MP for Geelong, the Honourable Cameron Ling?

Geelong

Bartel gracefully patrols the midfield
Jimmy Bartel
Typically the destroyer in chief when it comes to Geelong versus Adelaide, there's little that Bartel has not achieved against the Crows lineup. Lacking the profile and the stats of Gary Ablett perhaps, but this dreamboat has done more damage to the Crows single handed than any Geelong player since God walked amongst us. Almost certain to be screened by one of Reilly or Doughty, what will happen this time around?

A new, and yet senior, opponent enters the field
James Podsiadly
Perhaps the newest element to this tussle, if the J-Pod is to have an impact on this game, which he might need to do if the Geelong midfield forgets their kicking boots, he is going to need to do something that none of the current crop of Geelong key forwards has ever really done before - get a hold of Ben Rutten.

The X Factor

800px-USS_Porpoise_(SS-172)%2C_20_July_1944.jpg

Jason Porplyzia
The Porpoise has had a bad year. Although hardly alone in suffering from an injury plagued pre and early season, it's taken him a lot longer than others to find touch, and to adjust to the presence of a second quality tall in Taylor Walker in the forward line. After a spell in the magoos, he has bounced back with a pair of ok games ranging from half back through the middle and the forward line. Can he escape notice in the shuffle for long enough to regain some of that 2009 "AA spot stolen because the selectors were too gutless to not pick a dead set ordinary Judd and put Harvey in the position he actually played" form?

usstexasdrydock.jpg

Brad Ottens
Is he fit? Will he be fit? Can he fit in a medium family saloon? Spending more and more time in dry dock as each season passes, he may be forced to test his fitness as the less capable Adelaide ruckmen try the best strategy available to them and work him around the ground.

Changes vs Adelaide

What a hard week to pick them. Mooney's suspension is over and Corey could/should come back (Why was he a late change vs Hawks?) No injuries or reports from Saturday so...

IN: Mooney, Corey
OUT: Duncan, Hogan?

Byrnes is the most likely to get dropped for SJ in my opinion too. Can't see who else would be squeezed out.

Thoughts?

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

Byrnes.... He's had a good season, but he had a shocker yesterday.

He's got some big weaknesses with his inability to use his right side and you can see defenders really step hard on his left hand side to force him into those ridiculous left handed 360 spins. Also, somehow he's made it as a forward pocket without ever learning to get front and square to marking contests

I like Duncan a lot more in his position. Duncan's more versatile and is a better finisher

Geez its getting hard isn't it!

I think the game against Adelaide will be really important for Byrnes...

I was thinking that Wojo may be dropped, but he was really important against the Hawks.

But so was Stokes.

Then how bout Hawkins... when is he back, will he force his way back and with whose place?

Wojo will not be dropped. He has had a cracking season and his runs against Hawthorn just prooved again how valuable he is to the team.

Byrnes maybe unlucky ... but one week Stokes is up, the next Byrnes, so really touch and go. Its getting tricky now isnt' it? Can't see us leaving out Hawkins or Mooney...but then again just fail to see us dropping Blake who has bee solid this year...

SJ would surely command a spot, but very difficult to see either of Byrnes or Stokes (on the back of his match yesterday!) getting flicked....

Tough Tough decisions, and fitness will play a huge part in selections

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

Can anyone see Pods getting a rest this week with Moons coming back? I don't think he should (and hope he doesn't, for my SC team's sake!), but he's been carrying a sore groin and ankle since the Essendon game.

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

Duncan and Hogan will both be omitted. Byrnes has way to many brownie points after a good couple of seasons.

This is true.

Duncan will make way because Byrnes has runs on the board and Duncan has done little in the past couple of weeks.

Byrnes really was horrible yesterday though so will need quite a game to avoid the chop the following week. He tends to turn it on though just when you start to think he has lost form. I expect 20 possessions and 4 goals this week!

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

To be fair to Shannon, he did shepherd the ball with his face in the third term, and could only see out of one eye for the rest of the game.

5 minutes to go in the third term. So he was inexcusably horrible for the best part of three quarters.

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

Corey was a late change with fluid in the knee i believe, not sure if Byrnes would be squeezed out its not like he really has been struggling has he?

I heard Corey was ill? He was running sprints on the 'G after the game, so i'm guessing he'll be in this week.

I could see one of the bigger names being rested, but there's no way Bomber will drop Byrnes.

I think definitely. Let him get over those injuries and come back against Brisbane at Skilled to kick 8. Corey in for Hogan would should also happen.

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

NO way Byrnes or Wojo will get dropped. Their pace is invaluable. 08 GF taught the coaching panel that in the hardest way. Pods will get rested. He is sore. Mooney for Pods, Corey for Hogan. Duncan is a great player. Hawkins may come in for Blake which would be harsh on Blakey.

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

Blake will not get dropped, especially with Ottens only just coming back.

Even if Byrnes isnt dropped this week, I think he will be for SJ. Once Hogan and Duncan go, he's next on current form/importance.

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

Disagree completely. He's a liability. Has been for several weeks now. We're better without him in our side. Duncan is a far better option.

Horrible call. Was one of our most important players in last years GF. Not in great form, but neither are some of our other players. Ablett has been ordinary for a month now.

Ordinary for Ablett is still way ahead of 20 others in our team these past 4 weeks

I reckon there's some watching Ablett with GC coloured glasses at the moment. His first 1/2 this week was fantastic. Easily best BOG up to half time. 3rd Q was average, then picked it up again in the last.

Overall, not scintillating, but certainly far from 'ordinary'.

Was there any chance he was just a bit sore from the week before? Mind you I saw highlights on the fifth quarter of him running sprints after the game and he looked pretty damn good for someone who was either sick, sore or lame!

I would assume that duncan is out unless they rest pods... to me he didn't do a whole lot yesterday.. SJ is back in for sure when he is right so selection headaches ahead.. especially with hawkins to come back in... its a good problem to have but a problem all the same finding the right balance and mix

Re: Changes vs Adelaide

sore in the knee/fluid and a touch of the flu is what i heard.

I would keep Duncan in if possible and if Jimmy's elbow still isn't 100% rest him.

In: Corey and Mooney
Out: Hogan and Bartel/Duncan

Shagga has enough brownie points in the bank to keep his spot after two or three average games, only needs to worry if he puts in a shocker against Adelaide and/or against Brisbane as well.
