Ablett was still doing his job, and doing it very well, Thompson wasn't.

The similarities with this season though are there. At times brilliant but inconsistent football, and this arrogant and unwarranted perception that they can effortlessly step up a gear when they have to. People can point to excuses but the ladder doesn't lie. We're where we are because we aren't quite as good right now. Next year hopefully they'll be better.
In all fairness, no player should ever talk back to the coach. Even the great man. Compared to last year we have more Injuries, a harder draw than anyone else, and no luck has gone our way (stiffer umpiring, losing lots of close games) and of course having to deal with retirements and play 10 debutants. This is all true, not excuses. How are our players arrogent? They simply can't play at their peak all year as there are so many aging bodys so they would get burnt out come finals. The only way to win 4 finals in a row is to conserve energy now.

I just hope we put some time into Rhyce Shaw and Nic Malceski this time around. Drove me nuts how often either one of them was just able to waltz out of defence under no pressure whatsoever back in Round 13.

And always allow for the guaranteed kick in play where Shaw kicks to himself, runs off to the side where a Swans player shepherds and then kicks long to the wing.

We should have someone zoned in close to prevent him doing this (moreso preventing the protection he gets once he takes off).

Update from Scotty's press conference this morning:

- Varcoe currently in a moonboot which is precautionary, will train later in the week and club is hopeful he will play this weekend.
- Smedts had surgery yesterday and will definitely miss this week. Hasn't been ruled out of week one final yet.
- Selwood, Scarlett and T Hunt will all return this week.

I am still leaning towards the Swans winning this match.

Factors in our favour are that Sydney had a hard hit out last week and they may be a bit flat this week and they have to travel. But the smaller ground at Geelong suits them as they play a smaller ground at home.

Last week we lost clearances and contested possessions to the Bulldogs FFS so if the Catters go in with that kind of attitude to this game, they will spank us.

Should at least give us a clue as to where we sit in the finals race.

The Dogs average 39 clearances a game this season, more than Collingwood, St Kilda and us - three teams known to be tough opponents.

They are also equal 5th in average contested possessions - on the same number as Hawthorn and ahead of top 8 teams in West Coast, North Melbourne and us.

It's pretty well documented that the Dogs' midfield is actually pretty good. Boyd and Griffin are guns, Cooney played a stand-out game on the weekend and Minson has had a career best season. It's their forward line that is bottom 6 standard and why they're where they are on the ladder.

But agreed, we definitely need to lift in these areas to beat Sydney who is the number one contested possession team in the league.

I guess in the end the only stat that matters is the one on the scoreboard. But it is going to be a tough day at the office this week against a seasoned side in good form.

Sounds like they'll consider playing Vardy this week if Stephensen is still unavailable. Sydney's ruck department will trouble any lone ruckman and West will need support.

I think its established that Walker just isn't up to it (yet) and we've only really got two viable options. Orren's hand suffered an inordinate amount of swelling that has kept him from coming back sooner rather than later. I'd suggest he's the first choice to come in, then potentially Vardy.

Any word on Dawson? Is he still struggling to gain fitness?

Either that or push Harry to one wing and Pods to the other. :D

Hi guys - quick question, is this game sold out? I'm desperate to go. Anyone that can help out please pm me. Thanks!

I get the sense they will go with Vardy, ahead of Stephenson.

It would be in line with their policy of promoting youth over older fringe players and they clearly have a huge opinion of Vardy.

However, I think Stephenson's form before his injury was very good and I actually thought he got us going against Hawthorn. So I would go with him this week and in the finals, with Vardy the back up plan.

Man for man, we are far more talented squad than Sydney. I admire what they have achieved this year but I think at our home ground we should win this.

Geelong match up very well against midfields like Sydney's. Big bodied, hard midields like Hawthorn and Sydney mean the game is played on our terms. The teams who have troubled us are those that have more have more running power in the middle.

I would be confident we can beat them here and ideally repeat the trick later in the finals, even at their home ground.

If Orren was fit, he'd have to start ahead of Vardy, surely??

I wouldn't be surprised if Vardy came straight back in. Vardy has the ability to ruck and go forward which Scotty loves and Orren doesn't have. It would be risky, but they seem to be in a risk taking mood
I have not seen the best of Vardy, obviously, as I remember him as more potential than reality, in both ruck and forward roles.

Not necessarily.

We played Walker ahead of Orren given his increased mobility, pace and danger (pressure) in forward line. With West/Orren we have looked a little inbalanced in the few games they have played together and certainly the West/Simpson partnership was not flexible enough.

Vardy is special in the fact that he is a genuine ruck and also the superior forward to Walker. Whether or not he is anywhere near his formline of last year, I have no idea....but he does offer us the most versatile option.

I say get him in there - if he is declared fit enough then we won't loose anything by trying him against the Swans. We can fall back on either Walker or Orren, but if it shows some signs there is nothing stopping us backing Vardy/West into finals. Could be a very dangerous proposition for others to face as both are extremely mobile.

Carrying both Varcoe and Vardy is a massive risk given limited preparation - but boy the upside is bloody strong!

Based on his exposure last year he is far more dangerous than Orren or Walker as a second ruck.

Vardy is a genuine ruck with a great leap. He attacks the footy and contest hard and is a good contested mark (already)....if he is declared fit enough to play AFL then we haven't got anything to loose by unleashing him against the Swans.

Seems to me that West + Vardy = 2 x #2 rucks. Is that the right balnce? Probably is v Hawks, what about WCE/Freo? We'd be smashed. Pity about Dawson. That's why we have Orren??

Vardy is a genuine ruck option as opposed to Walker. He is also a more dangerous mobile option than Orren.

Is going to be more useful against all opponents and at least keep opposition rucks more accountable. We may however look at a suprise move and play Simpson against either Freo/WCE as he is probably our best tap ruck and can certainly counter these ruck partnerships with his size....fitness is primary concern here though.

We won't know of course unless we throw him in there (pending fitness assessment!!)

Sydney couldn't beat Pies or Hawks in Sydney. If they were real contenders they had to win them. Not up to it. And if we can't beat them on Saturday then neither are we. So I expect a good win.
