Re: I don't mean to be rude but I've been there before.

It's hard to come to terms with, but it's got to happen eventually. Hopefully the Cats deal with it quicker than we did.

We're not a spent force, but games like these will happen more often

Really?

I don't remember norf kanawho's ever winning 3 flags in 5 years.

The poor norf sap must be from some other parallel dimension.

To North's credit they did win 2 in 3 years in the 90's

Tough day at the office and even the Romans failed at some point...

Not saying we are failing but we got beaten by a harder, faster team. We were out coached to - anyone that leaves Rielly in the back line as a free and unmarked player for 3/4 of the game ( even with the injuries we had) needs to put their hand up.

I really hope no one player gets belted for this as the team was down and the team got beaten.

One thing I noticed was the apparent size difference between the likes of Motlop, Guthrie, Smedts, Stringer, T Hunt etc vs even Sloan, Danger, Thompson etc. Again not a complaint but a bunch of 20 gamers got just abused by bigger players today and the more experienced bigger bodies were beaten to the ball.

Not all doom and gloom but reality is hitting home. We aren't going anywhere near the bottom but if we keep playing like this we will pass our top 4 spot on to another...

Go Catters...

Duncan was in the paper yesterday talking about a tipping point. We just reached it.

When we have so many out thru injury and or retirement then hit a side running on top of the ground , thats what happens.

What we have to realise is most clubs with this amount out of their best would not be 4 and 3

I'm just watching the second quarter and what sticks out is how few ball winners we actually have.

ALL of our kids are not winning the ball. And a lot of them are losing the ball.

But can we stop this crap?
gotta love the supporters in here who quickly jump off the bandwagon when we losing.

They will be the first to talk them up come the end of the year though

If you are going to be way over the top and be biased that's all well and good.
But don't think you're going to get away with snipes at people who have balanced opinions.

It's bullshit to be honest.

Tough loss.

It's nights like this I am glad I am going out tonight, that is until my friends spend all night asking me about the footy :D I will change the subject :D

Seriously though, disappointing. Next week will tell us a lot about where we are at. If we can bounce back our top 8 aspirations could still be there, if not, maybe not. Hopefully we see a Geelong like effort unlike what we saw today.

There will no doubt be some pretty emotional talk while I'm not here so I'll just add some of my brief discussion thoughts:
The players have given us a lot over the last few years, and for that we owe them a lot, and should respect them. But we do need to transition towards the future, and Scott was a good choice as coach because he is doing that. Look at the number of kids he is playing in a premiership side. Some of them made mistakes today and will continue to do that, we can't expect the transition to be seamless. I tend to agree with SJ that the window is shut and another attack in 2 or 3 years is a go. To do that we need to get some of these guys up to 50 games as quick as we can. For sure, they need to merit their selection, but if they do, and guys like Guthrie do, then I'll back them even when they make mistakes, and we need to. It's a balancing act, one of the things I love about Geelong is how we always compete and try our guts out to win every game. So we don't want to chuck out all the older players and think as if 'well we can't make top 4 etc so we'll give up on the year'. But we do need to keep playing youth and back them in.

In line with that we need to look at the areas where we are struggling, in particular the midfield. It furstrated me to watch Bundy spend most of the first half sitting in a forward pocket. The reality is Hogan aside, we don't have a lot of inside contested ball mids in the vfl to look at bringing in. Jester is right that we're having to run a lot of kids who aren't genuine mids in there and develop them into that. But one thing we can do is change how we structure up within the 22. Get Bundy in there for the whole game (or at least as much as his fitness will allow), keep Poodle in there who is doing very well, put Duncan who has been one shining light the last two weeks in there as much as possible, same with Stringer. We need to do that both to try and change up the area that's not working, but more importantly to work out what our next midfield group is and develop these guys so in 2 years Sel and Kel aren't carrying the midfield on their backs alone. I love guys like Chap, and Smithy, but we can't just play the same midfield group all the time, and that's one change I'd like to see. Dropping those guys next week or retiring them is unrealistic, but at least we could change the structure so that someone like Chap goes to a forward pocket and we develop Bundy as a mid, and so on. Scott has a hard job, he has to on one hand get the best out of the vets for their last year or 2 but also develop the kids as quickly as possible. It's a hard challenge but we are in good hands and I have faith in him to do it.

Selection wise obviously we will get back Scarlo and Jimmy and probably Stokes. Byrnes will go out, maybe Gillies or Bundy depending on injuries, but I would be inclined to keep Gillies in if fit (Bundy of course, I consider him a regular). Would look at a second ruckman too, that would help us in midfield.

would have loved Wojack and Varcoe out there today. Throw in Menzel too.

Exptect us to bounce back with a vengence.

Don't microwave those memberships yet!!

Todays result is probable where we are at,a full list and we're competitive,3 or 4 experienced players out we just can't cover like previous years with out sacrificing the structure.
If we can't find a way to keep Hawkins and Johnson in the forward line we may as well not even play them. Please find a way to get Walker into this side we are desperate for another big body.

A far as a game goes....meh. It was a bad one.

As far as the season goes, I think that is more important. We have lost 3 early games and that makes it hard to prepare for the finals. If we can, we have to win just about everything to try and get into the top 4 which is a huge advantage. That can leave a team flat.

I thought we were still a chance in 2012. I don't think we are much of a chance now. Still, I will enjoy the team's never say die attitude for the rest of the season and hope for a better year next year.

ALL of our kids are not winning the ball. And a lot of them are losing the ball.

Correct that is true. A lot of the kids, bar Bundy, as good as they are, are not necessarily genuine ball winners, and some of our genuine ball winners (e.g. Corey Chapman etc) are declining.

That's reality. Like I said in my other post we can try and develop the ones we have though, and of course keep bringing in more and finding out which ones are ball winners, see what we've got to work with. We could use drafting another inside mid or two for sure I think, and I'm sure we will see that this week and next.

The other noticeable fact today was how many goals we conceded from turnovers, the kids made mistakes as you'd expect (Guthrie's handpass in the goalsquare, Smedts blind turn in the middle of d50 to Johncock, Gillies pushing the guy over the line when he didn't need to etc) but I thought the whole side, especially the experienced guys, didn't have enough intent at the contested ball, and made poor decisions going forward, and Adelaide duly punished our turnovers.

Hey, at least we get to watch Black Caviar.
Let's see which mullet headed Adelaide person puts in another worst call of the century.

On Mullets. What is going on with Walkers head? Teeth, hair... Now that Ling has retired he easily has the ugliest scon in the AFL.

Yeah, but what am I supposed to do with this truckload of manure?

:D

It's needed at Football Park :p:D

Too early to write us off yet, with more players to come back in we will bounce back. Playing Adelaide in Adelaide is a very tough task and we saw that today, especially when they beat an in form Sydney in Sydney.

Tough game to watch.. But if you look at the teams formline we haven't been in great shape..at could be expected...

Besideds Dawks who's our bitch we haven't really impressed so far this year.. All top 8 contenders in Freo, Norf, Adelaide we have lost...

6 Months ago we where premiers and you would say no side would beat us in the comp... This year is almost a 180.. I'm not writing us off.. But we have a long way to go if we are to go b2b.... Or even make Finals...

Don't know why we replaced Bartel with a soft outside receiver in Byrnes instead of a fellow in-and-under tough-nut in Horlin-Smith, especially considering our woes in winning contested possession in the first six weeks of the season. We were smashed in that area again today 148 to 126.

Having said that though, we lost the game in the 2nd term. We went from a 19 point deficit to a 63 point hole at half time. We lost the other 3 terms by a combined 6 points.

I'll have an early crack at the changes for next week:

In: Scarlett Bartel Horlin-Smith
Out: Gillies (inj) Christensen (inj) Byrnes

This is something that happens to all great teams once a few of the stalwarts retire, and the kids are brought in. We're a team in flux and this won't be the last time this year that an up & comer beats us. I would say that now is where Scott's coaching REALLY begins, since the kids he is putting in are 100% his, being coached his way. Better that these games start happening now, while the memory of 2011 is still fresh because Scott will need time to make this happen and we may see a few lean years as all the sides we've been belting now have their turn against us.

Well said VC.

I'm bitterly disappointed in the way the team performed today, that doesn't mean I'm "off the band wagon".
