I would agree that it is likely that Collingwood would have a better retention than other supporters. Not because they are more die-hard, but becauseOnly Pies numbers are growing IMO. The rest are dropping off, and getting snapped up by longer suffering, waiting Pies fans who don't give it up.
a) you have less chance as a regular club member of Collingwood of getting a GF ticket than smaller clubs
b) they are regularly competitive, so there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
On point b) it would not surprise me if Carlton fans had declined as it has been a pretty painful period.
But I can't believe they would have gone from 23.5% of Gold members to roughly 37% (11k)
There will still be Collingwood supporters who dropped membership (even if just by natural causes). And based on 2010 numbers they couldn't be at 11k even if no one dropped off.
Yes I am a bit of a spreadsheet nerd, but here are their numbers from 2008 to 2014 with a percentage of all AFL members (excl. those without a nominated club) and raw number change from previous year for Coll and all AFL (again excl. no club nominated):
year | Coll | % all AFL members | change | all AFL |
2014 | 12143 | 25.11% | -306 | -66 |
2013 | 12449 | 25.71% | -206 | -362 |
2012 | 12655 | 25.94% | 296 | 714 |
2011 | 12359 | 25.71% | 1547 | 2214 |
2010 | 10812 | 23.58% | 588 | 2017 |
2009 | 10224 | 23.32% | 260 | 1958 |
2008 | 9964 | 23.79% |
| | |
So the next couple of intakes will be a killer with an increase of 1547 in 2011 from 2010, but at the same time 512 dropped off in 2013 and 2014.
