Only Pies numbers are growing IMO. The rest are dropping off, and getting snapped up by longer suffering, waiting Pies fans who don't give it up.
I would agree that it is likely that Collingwood would have a better retention than other supporters. Not because they are more die-hard, but because
a) you have less chance as a regular club member of Collingwood of getting a GF ticket than smaller clubs
b) they are regularly competitive, so there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
On point b) it would not surprise me if Carlton fans had declined as it has been a pretty painful period.

But I can't believe they would have gone from 23.5% of Gold members to roughly 37% (11k)

There will still be Collingwood supporters who dropped membership (even if just by natural causes). And based on 2010 numbers they couldn't be at 11k even if no one dropped off.

Yes I am a bit of a spreadsheet nerd, but here are their numbers from 2008 to 2014 with a percentage of all AFL members (excl. those without a nominated club) and raw number change from previous year for Coll and all AFL (again excl. no club nominated):

yearColl% all AFL memberschangeall AFL
2014
12143
25.11%
-306
-66
2013
12449

-206
-362
2012
12655
25.94%
296
714
2011
12359
25.71%
1547
2214
2010
10812
23.58%
588
2017
2009
10224
23.32%
260
1958
2008

23.79%

So the next couple of intakes will be a killer with an increase of 1547 in 2011 from 2010, but at the same time 512 dropped off in 2013 and 2014.

Tend to agree with you here. I think the backlash and exclusivity of gold will take a hit if that’s not the case. It becomes abit pointless if you follow clubs with a large gold base. But we’ll see will make for good conversation if it ends up being pies blues

Oh it will be juicy! AFL denying gold members because they flew too close to the sun and sold off too much of the reserve to Corporates :)

They were checking tickets at the bar. So not only did I miss out on tickets in the AFL reserve as a gold member of 30 years I also was allowed access to the bar. Lucky we had one ticket in the AFL reserve that got us all in the bar.
The members bar on L2? That's been dining only all finals

Outside the MCC it was where most the empty seats were on N level wing in the AFL Members.
I wonder if that is because of those finals packages they sell. A ticket to every final. I wonder how many just buy it for the Grand Final.
What a waste.
At least the MCC is transparent. Never any doubt that wouldn't fill because they want to maintain walk up access.

In banzai's defense he/ she was just quoting based on another post.

People make the mistake of thinking numbers keep growing, but of course people don't renew each year, otherwise silvers would never get in.
I have said it before but I will say it again (and someone correct me if I am wrong, but 2011 joins haven't got in yet):

Correct im 2011 and am 333rd on the list

Is that your number from last year or some new number after this year's intake? Earlier in the thread people up to just over 1000 said they were offered Gold this year so maybe some of 2011 has been upgraded.

They are dining tickets, alot of which spend more of their time in the bar.

A lot of Collingwood supporters would've signed up around 2010/11 who have been offered upgrades last couple of years. It's not just how many it's when they signed up.

Also with what, 16 games a year at the G including Anzac Day it is more beneficial to Collingwood supporters compared to those who play at Docklands or Geelong so probably less attrition.

According to figures from last year, Collingwood still have only 7,000 gold members and the next most is 5,000.

Which makes me believe they do cap certain clubs and a silver member from the Bulldogs may jump a Collingwood member in the queue.
I don't believe that, you would be able to tell going by this thread and comparing the waitlist numbers and how much they progress year on year compared to other clubs.

I suspect a lot of these are uncovered by ringing up or emailing the AFL membership people.
I emailed them a year or two ago asking for breakdown of club support numbers and they wouldn't give it to me, said it's not something they publish.
