interesting to read that tairon ah-mu - who has been in the dees' nga - is ineligible to be selected by the dees as an nga pick

mfc; fisted forever
The AFL will also hand Jeff White 100k under the table to nominate Gold Coast as his sons preferred location. Guaranteed.

The AFL have destroyed the dees' future with their ridiculous making up of the rules as they go.

I too get angry at conspiracies that I've made up that haven't even happened yet that it's unclear even if it will be beneficial to others yet.

it has happened already. twice. Mac Andrew and Ah-mu. I already expected the AFL to come up with something regarding Ah-mu.
Like, for example, him never actually being eligible under the rules?
15.8 Qualified NGA Players
(a) For the purposes of this Rule 15, a Qualified NGA Player means a NGA Player who:
(i) was born in Africa or Asia; or (ii) has a biological parent who was born in Africa or Asia; or (iii) is an Indigenous Person; or
(iv) is a CALD NGA Player

Good post but on J.McGov, he was a late rookie pick

If Freo wanted him, they could've easily had him.

They didn't miss out.
If we had access to him, he gets put into programs and tracked. He probably gets more production at a young age and gets drafted higher. No access means no special treatment.

Being in a NGA’s or F/S program is going to help the kid get drafted. They still need to do the work & be talented but it’s no surprise the QLD & NSW academies are pumping out better kids since they have been throwing a lot of cash at it.

I suspect WC & Freo will ramp up in that area now the access has changed.

yeah but they'll change the rules to allow for Somoans to qualify as soon as the Dees miss out on Ah-mu. They could fix it now, but they'll wait until the 2025 draft has finished.

Very suss stuff going on at Afl house.

Same thing happened with the Afl waiting until after Ugle-Hagan got drafted, even though they knew 1 year in advance thay he was going to be the top pick. And similar thing happened with Mac Andrew. And same will happen with Ah-mu. Same thing happened with Kako. Afl waits to see which clubs will benefit/be disadvantaged by their ruling and makes the rules accordingly.

Same thing with allowing the Gold Coast to clean up with Walters/Rogers etc. but changing the rules after they take off with the loot.

Kind of similar situation playing out with Hawthorn and Christian Moraes who we have no access to, his father is from AFL heartland that is the country of Brazil, so Hawthorn haven't bothered developing him but we asked if we could list him as NGA and were told 'no'.

Lions, 2 straight GFs and 2 no1 picks in 3 years.

Might get a flag and pick 1.

Classic AFL house
Yeah it's too unfair. Just get rid of f/s and academy picks, so it's actually a full open draft. Players should not be able to choose where they play.

You can still go into deficit can’t you?
If so I think teams will just get what points they can and accept that they will lose their first pick the following year
The major issue I have with the draft are the "artificial" picks created through 3 things...
Firstly FS & Academy bid matching with junk picks.
Secondly, Free Agency compensation picks
And thirdly, Assistance picks.
Like we saw last year, Pick 19 became pick 30 which means the team that really needed the early pick was penalised by better performed teams having access to the best talent because of the artificial picks.
So how do we fix it?
Firstly, no ASSISTANCE picks to any team ever, as it just rewards poor list management. You stuff up your list mgmt you fix it!
Secondly, FREE AGENCY. No compensation picks until after the end of first round. As we saw last year with McKay, NM was never going to match the offer because the compensation pick was way more than he was worth. This would see more clubs match, and more free agents forced to the trade table.
Thirdly bid matching for both FS & ACADEMY... I'd allow some discount (10%), but the starting point, for First Rounders particularly, must be a pick in the bid round with points being made up with their their later round picks. If a club has say, 2 or more 1st round bids to match, then they need to trade in the picks in the appropriate round, or they use a future first to match. That then reduces the number of first round picks in the following year's draft. It will stop stop clubs from double dipping by trading away first rounders to improve their draft hand in one draft, knowing they can get elite talent in the next draft with junk picks, as happened with Daicos, Ashcroft, Fletcher Darcy, Ugle-Hagen, when those clubs went to the draft minus a first rounder.
If all of these things were implemented, it would see a far less compromised and much fairer draft.

Players in AFL worth more than pick 1: ~15-30 (1-2 per club)
Pick 10: ~80-100 (5-6 per club)
Pick 20 (end of 1st round): ~200-250 (10-12 per club)
Pick 40 (end of 2nd round): ~400-500 (20-25 per club)
Pick 60 (end of 3rd round): Simply not required anymore.

If compensation picks were only after the 1st round was completed (I fully agree) instead of directly after the clubs pick in that round, then there would be a much fairer comparison.

Clubs would attempt to keep everyone - if they lost a FA it's for genuine reason, and the compensation is low enough to not really matter.

The real easy way to fix the FatherSon/Academy player issue is this

1. Everyone gets academies that grants them exclusive access

2. There’s a points tax on talent.
Ie if matching in the top 5 you should pay a 20% surplus due to getting unfair access to elite talent. 5-10 pay 10% overs and in 10-20 a 5% overs.

3. Can’t match players if you trade/have traded your FRP

Teams should have access to the top guys they develop but it should also hurt. They should have to give up something significant.

West Coast tried to steal a player already, classy club.

It should be a penalty, not a discount.

An absolute massive one.

It should be costing Brisbane 2-3 drafts worth of their top picks to match Ashcroft.

In fact, an appropriate system should have been such that they have absolutely no way of recruiting Levi unless they traded 1 or 2 players of genuine value, as their future capital would have already been exhausted by Will. I.E a Raynor, McCluggage, Bailey etc.

Especially when factoring in clubs are able to get early access, early training, early sports science involvement.

That is where clubs need to pay for it, not be discounted.

Is it a modern miracle of probability that the top 5 of the draft keeps being populated by children of former AFL players or Academy prospects, all about 0.1% of the registered footballers of the age group around the country? No, they have an inherent advantage over another prospect during their development, not only because of their parents likely knowledge of the game, probable genetics, but also very early access to AFL facilities because of the payoff to AFL clubs for this investment.
