I think 3 picks also does the same job, but makes f/s still accessible.
Most f/s kids are not top 5 picks, the matching generally isnt an issue, but I think we do want the top 5 pick f/s kids to be able to be matched, but it should cost a finals team most if not all of their draft hand for 2 years to do so.

Fair is closer to 4 years for a top 5 pick

Keep in mind picks outside top 50 are basically worthless under new points system.

Assuming no shenanigans it would be picks 18+ 36 as having value each year.

18+ 36 might get you 17 at most trading up. 18+18 might get you pick 10-12. 10 + 18 might get you 6-8+ 3x36 might be worth 1 spot

5+18+36 is looking pretty fair for pick 1 most years and that’s 4 draft hands assuming they maintain the best record for 4 years.

It should cost players to get that high up the draft.

Yet this is where free agency complicates things because picks are cheap teams can double dip on free agents if they do trade out established players

that wouldn't work. if you had say a Nick Daicos coming to your club, it would entice tanking to make sure you don't go deep into the finals.

I think if you have a father/son or academy player with a bid in the 1-3 range then you should need a top 5 pick to be part of a matching bid and pay full price in points with no discount. if a bid is in the 4-6 range then a top 10 pick. If a bid is in the 7-10 range then a top 15 pick. A bid 11-15 then a first round pick.

So go back to the previous year when we bid pick 2 on Will Ashcroft, Brisbane would have needed to trade for a top 5 pick to be in a position to match the bid. So assume Brisbane could have got pick 5 from Essendon, that would have been 1878 points and they would have needed 639 points extra, pick 29 equivalent.

The challenge for Brisbane would have been to secure the mandatory draft pick. Brisbane paid pick 34, 35, 36 and 38 for Ashcroft, it was at best a minor inconvenience to get these picks and they had plenty to get Fletcher in the same draft. They would not have got a top 5 pick for that tsunami of shit picks, they would have actually have had to make a sacrifice to get a top rated talent, which is how it should be. These are just free hits now for teams that are contending or already premiers. It works against levelling the playing field.

Are you completely blind to the fact that Gary Ablett was literally the best player in the league and he couldn't get Gold Coast to a single finals series in his time that he was there?

The incentive to tank is much higher in basketball due to there only being 5 players on the feild at at time.

But brisbane we’re down huge in the semi and prelim would have been easy enough for them to roll over if they had the incentive to do so

Well, nothing stopping a team trading one of their better players to get a top 5 pick. Every team wants something without giving anything up

there is no point to tanking because the higher up the ladder you are when you get the father son the less likely a bid will come in early, the teams with the picks who would bid on the player are either not in the same premiership window so dont wanna make you pay or dont want to annoy another club for no benefit. you best believe if your in the bottom 4 a early bid is coming for your gun f/s.

The teams tanking for Cooper Flagg are the likes of Detroit, Charlotte, Washington and Portland. Teams that have ZERO chance of winning the championship this year or for the foreseeable future without tanking for a player like him.

Lets also not loose site of the fact that there is 5 players in the court in the NBA as opposed to 18 in AFL. The affect a single player can have on a team in those leagues is Worlds apart.

Remove the flat discount.

Teams now pay either a discount (bottom of ladder), actual price (middle of table), or premium (top of table).

Unfixable now. AFL have created an out of control monster with academies and father sons. Add in the fixturing debacle and the whole job is cooked. No fixing of rules can change the ridiculous leg up some clubs have already been gifted purely based on good fortune. Then they receive it at a discount.

It's all about luck. The teams who have had it, have been successful, while others wallow down the bottom in disappointment watching other clubs that finish higher on the ladder getting earlier picks and better young elite talent. At the same time seeing their own picks move further and further down the order. It's comical.

Now Brisbane get the best kid in the draft for the 2nd time in 3 years after winning a flag.

No different to sitting in front of a poker machine. Just sit there and hope your day will come.

You wouldn't want to get too cocky the only way to get the Academy players is through the Tigers and the way it's looking we won't need Pick 18 from the Lions.

The funny thing about the FS stuff is that clubs like the Lions and Freo advocated for watering it all down a long time ago because the rule largely benefited long established clubs and assisted top talent to remain in the VFL. A lot of the VFL clubs didn’t want it watered down, some of who are now crying about the Daicos and Ashcrofts of the world.

So I don’t feel too sympathetic that it’s own turn to rort it.
