I get why we would look at Cunningham - but his skills at AFL level are really, really poor.

The reality when you are dumpster diving is that you are looking at players with flaws. It’s all about identifying a strength or a skill and working with that and not really worrying about the rest.

Cunningham for example is an absolutely elite, disciplined two way runner, but only average by foot and not overly physical. That might do us for now to set a bit of a standard.

Stocker is again probably only average by foot but a pretty burly, physical kid who likes the hard stuff and does all the nice defensive actions you look for.

I’d like to see what else falls out the bottom of the remaining sides but at this stage I’d have no issue offering Stocker a 2 year deal and I’d be monitoring Jed Anderson very closely as well, they may be limited footballers but there’s some immediate defensive steel and fight right there.

The only guys who can really get up and back are Durham and Martin. Cox looked like he could as well, in year 1 anyway. All play outside and none have much in the way of speed/power. Hoping Hobbs can build his tank and develop into a really strong runner - he has the rig and the will power.

The athletic profile of our midfield is so far away from what’s going on at Sydney, Freo, Geelong and Collingwood….How did this happen? Personally I think it’s Dodoro’s real hanging offence as a list manager - he has never produced a contemporary, balanced midfield unit. Never. He clearly just does not get it.

Really can't emphasise this enough.

Carlton f’d up by drafting Dow and Stocker as mids despite them having below average endurance for their positions. SOS was slow to catch on to the trend of needing elite runners. As were we.

Wouldn't Stocker be a delisted free agent?
Yeah same with Downie. I just meant in regards to list spots. If Ham, Heppell and Francis go we’ll have 6 senior list spots. Wouldn’t be surprised if some others jumped ship.

We’ll take our first rounder plus 2 Daveys, depending on where the bids come it’ll likely wipe our draft currency until about the 6th round. Meaning speculative prospects in a draft that isn’t that deep.

Might be worth taking a one year chance on a couple of young fellows with some senior experience.

Carlton might re-rookie Stocker like they have a few in the past

drafting a player and never once trying them in the position they were drafted from is the kind of stuff we would do, i look forward to taking stocker and containing his stellar run as a first round back pocket along side fellow first round back pocked McGrath

The only thing on this, which supports your point anyway, is that Stocker could be genuinely elite by foot.

Look at it this way, 6 footers who are not quick don't play at half back unless they can kick.

I've watched him pretty close, has a nice kicking action mechanically but decision making woeful, the amount of times I watched him lace out the opposition or kick oof was too many. Seems like an extractor or nothing

The sort of deal I would like to see us get into is leveraging our F2 to improve our draft position this year. We arent getting a big fish this year.

For example, GCS have more picks than they can count this year and want future picks, we can use this and attempt to help them alleviate their cap issue.

For example
Ess out: F2, F4
GCS out: 25, 43, Fiorini (we take on all 600k as a Salary Dump)

GCS get salary relief, a list spot and a good pick next year, whilst we get midfield depth and some picks to try and move up this year.

We could offer 21 and 25 and see if that moves us up ahead of a Davey bid by getting a pick in the 11-14 range.

SEN talking about Parish sighted having coffee with Hawks from two different sources.
So many players are friends with other players across the league that this often means nothing, but if it is something I’d be happy. Parish has some great attributes but we’re in a position where we need to alter the balance of our midfield and he may get us some value.

Wonder if it’s worth using our pick 22 to get Norfs F2. They’ll need picks in that range to get what they want done this year trade wise. And they’ll still be shit next year.

Honestly would just take 6 and run
I think given he's contracted we could spring the second pick out of them as well, trade 22 and 24 for maybe pick 11-15 and a later pick to cover Davey bids. Have four first round picks in essence and maybe Munkara later on.

I mean sure, we could - but why?

Make life too difficult they just make the decision to wait next year. Pick 6 is about right, so I wouldn't muck around. If we could get their 3rd (50) as well that is about right.

I would then just wave 22 in front of Brisbane for Deven Robertson, and have a haul of pick 4, 6, Davey × 2 and Robertson. That's a good off season for a building team.
