Edit: Ohhhh I thought the posters you quoted were giving two different strategies. I wouldn’t go down the road of recruiting a seasoned KPF (seems counter-intuitive to the rebuild). I’d consider drafting one, given the right circumstances.

I agree with your midfield assessment (along with probably everything else). Sorry, my bad.
It's probably been a double edged sword (Covid). We have an abundance of untried talent however we have obviously identified a need to have this quantity on the list

covid has seen these kids untested however we've been unable to replace them with kids who also remain untried.

Should we go and spend our first on a KPF then that should be an admission the ones currently on the list aren't good enough and perhaps of those untried ones / depth (Eyre / Francis / McBride in particular) and perhaps instead go with one + one of the aforementioned.

I hope the defensive group is sorted out too because they are a bit of a mixed bunch. Stewart, Laverde (AFL), Hurley, BZT (depth in 2022/23), Brand, Reid, McBride (development). That is 7 KPP's with another 3 pseudo KPP's (Ridley, Francis, Heppell even).

How many players across the comp end up playing different positions ?

Max King was drafted as a key forward and plays key forward. Would be more that play there natural position than not. James Stewart was known as a forward, we brought him to the club as a forward and now found himself in defence. etc.

Sure… does throwing away picks and cap space importing established players make these kids more established more quickly? Does it help them to settle into the positions they were drafted for?

There are pretty much two reasons for investing heavily in the trade period/mature draftees/DFAs —
  • stop gaps so your team doesn’t completely bottom out between list builds, save the coach’s career/sell a few more memberships/plug holes in your list because someone is an LTI/suspended for a year, or
  • you’re about to win a flag and that player is the last piece of the puzzle.

Pretty sure we are neither of those things.

And Tom Lynch is eye wateringly expensive - he went to Richmond on 6m over 7 years. Ain’t no way I want to take on that contract for the price they’d likely ask, especially not for a 29 year old. And I wouldn’t have wanted him last year at 28 or the year before at 27 either. Where would that have gotten us really, besides blowing a massive hole in the budget and probably missed out on Perkins and Jones?

KPP is someone who can or does play in a key position, as a focal point in the forward line or as the defender who nullifies the same. Francis and Ridley have both played those roles in the past. Voss is an unknown quantity currently described as a 194cm “utility” and is built like the proverbial, who knows what he becomes.

Having question marks on these kids is a normal part of a list build. There are no shortcuts, no bandaids. It’s not 1980-something when you can buy a premiership winning list. Just have to be patient, let them mature together and learn their craft, find their place and get it done properly.

Tom Lynch was a throw away and probably a poor example. It was pointing out the need to expose Baldwin for example to AFL football earlier than he is probably ready. And the over reliance on to few (Jake Stringer or bust). Wright playing like Carey is not bankable, Tom Lynch kicking 40 - 60 goals should be.

I don't want to use those almost guys on my KPP lists. They may be able to in the right match ups but again, not bankable doing it week in - week out.

Yup some calls will need to be made, which may mean shifting some to the rookie list for a longer exposure.

Naturally, our eyes will look to the forward line as it is an area of weakness right now. We should hope that the question of whether the answer already lies on our list is answered this year.

Did not hurt to play Ben King back. Happens a lot.

Nic Blakey, Tom McCartin and Paddy McCartin.

Sydney's defensive trio all drafted as forwards if I'm not mistaking.

Blakey plays as some kind of HBF role, surprisingly he's 'only' listed at 195cm as he looks like an awkwardly tall giraffe that the 200cm guys usually do. Possibly similar to a role we'd use Cox in if we stop with the Wing experiment.

Failed forwards often make good defenders as they tend to understand how forwards play and have the requisite physical attributes. I don't think McGovern or Moore were drafted as defenders either from memory.

Rumours say Dylan Clarke will be re drafted in the mid season draft????.. anyone else heard this ?

Blakey is the player i hope we turn Cox into.
Rather than use his height as a point of difference on a wing, use his agility as a point of difference off HBF.

i think it will take next year too
Jones has had an interrupted start (2 now)
Baldwin had 2 ACL's in his junior years (and covid impacts)

Eyre & McBride i imagine take longer.
Question could be do we look to a cheaper mature option (a la Hogan, Brown in recent years) to step into the 22 and give the kids someone to aspire to displacing.

I would offer bailey smith a 5 year 4.5 million dollar deal
i would also throw big money at Dunkley and jamarra (I know he resigned but what are contracts worth)
at the very least it would put salary cap pressure on bulldogs
this is what clubs did to essendon in 2002 and we lost Blomfield Hardwick caracella and Heffernan in a couple of years
lastly I would desperately try to trade zac merrett
if you could get a mid to late first round pick for him you would be happy
i reckon north Melbourne would be a club that covet his skill set

I really like the Bailey Smith shout.

Do we have the flexibility to bring in a high priced recruit though with our salary cap?

If we’re even close to our salary cap limit with all the high profile players we’ve traded out and a team of mostly young kids then serious questions need to be asked of our list management team. Anyway I’m pretty sure there were articles last year saying we had a lot of room in our cap.

Trade McGrath for whatever we can get.

Get Travis Boak as free agent for 2 years to help the kids in midfield and half back.

Ship Francis off for whatever.

Find another small forward. Quick hbf with decent disposal.

Build.

Who will be out for the season ? No current spots on the list.

Really need a bit of outside speed as well. Someone who can work with Hind off half back.

I was suggesting a half back flanker who may end up with the ability to become a wingman down the track.

Good skills and pace would be a great skill set to start with

Tom Green. Whatever it takes.

Wonder if the explosion of Tom Green makes Jacob Hopper expendable?

This would be my thought. Hopper is an RFA next year, so maybe with Taranto and Green out of contract the Giants may be willing to move early for a greater price and free up some $$$.

Young enough (drafted same year as Parish) that he would fit our list build.

Would be great, but I imagine if he leaves GWS he is destined for Richmond.

Has a family connection there and apparently the Tiges have kept in contact.
Indeed, SEN did a good piece on it the other day. Surely one of Green, Taranto and Hopper comes up for grabs in the next year or two though. Any of them would be a nice addition.

Retire/Delist/Trade - Hurley, Heppell, Phillips, Francis, Ham and Cutler

Draft: George Wardlaw, Davey Twins, a classic half forward and a small running defender.

Free Agent: David Mundy
