He actually has looked quite capable when playing as a third tall. He just isn't as good at it as Ridley.

I do think we can fit them both in the defence long-term, but they kept trying to play him as the 2nd tall and he just couldn't get it done.
Just line them all up across half back without a notable opponent. Everyone is a star.

Rutten doesn't want Francis playing loose behind play racking up midfield numbers, and I get it. It was honestly embarrassing at times watching Hurley get 30 as that player.

Francis is an almost player. Almost took the mark, almost kicked the goal, almost laid a tackle, etc etc. If he doesn't have a defined role that he can play competently week in, week out, by seasons end, I think you just look to move him on at this stage of his career.

I reckon Francis would attract a 2nd.
He's a decent defender.

Typical of us that we had 2x forwards struggling for form, so we turned them into defenders, and now we have a top pick defender having to find form as a forward.....
Nobody wanted him at all last time we tried to trade him, so I'm not sure how he's increased in value since.

3 Tall Fwds - Stewart, Laverde, Ridley
Fritsch - J.Kelly
Kozzie - Redman

Id love for the Francis/Stewart switch

I think Rutten is so hesitant because then were not a very big or tall backline. Stewart atleast gives us that close to 200cm presence on the deep high balls.

Will be required against melbs 200cm tall fwds

The problem isn't a defender getting big numbers, it's that Hurley wasn't a good enough user to be the one doing it and constantly slowed down play and ended up kicking long down the line.

If you've got a bloke like Daniel Rich racking up 30s in defence instead, you're going to tear the opposition to shreds back the other way.

That is something I'd like to see Francis or Ridley get the opportunity to do, and what Ridley was sort of getting to do a couple of seasons back.

Brayshaw makes more sense than Hewett did if such a thing is possible.

With all of our depth, I would imagine we'd be even less interested.
Brayshaw has actually been playing more wing than anything so maybe we would be interested.

It's time to move on from what we needed a year ago or looked like we needed in round 1. Hobbs, Caldwell, Perkins will all come on and outshine Brayshaw over the next 5/6 years. We should continue to draft midfielders but I don't think we need to trade one in.

I felt at the start of the year that as well as a great tall forward, we need more small & middle sized class forward and back.. Nic Martin landed as a perfect example who fell in our lap for nothing. A truly outstanding ball user in the D50 would be nice. Caleb Daniel Rich Jnr, with a bit more size. If the right one emerges this year may be worth trading in.

Truth is, we are still 2 years away from being a chance, with all our talls of Cox, Reid, Bryan, Baldwin, Jones, Draper, Eyre & Brand all still in the "who knows" or "not quite yet" bucket.

It's hard after last year's promise, but we really are still building a list for the future, not for the now.

Unpopular opinion but I would be looking at key forward with our first round draft pick this year

Brayshaw is a plodder. Not what we need.

What we need is Petracca and Oliver. That ain't happening. So we supplement what we have through free agency and go back to the draft to try to find the stars.

Agreed. or trade for a seasoned one. We haven't had a good KPF since Lloyd.

Hasn't attended a centre bounce this year to date. He's not that inside grunt pig anymore but he's still a player we need. Spreads hard and runs defensively to drop in in front of the defence.

Could potentially be a situation where we offer him more years than Melbourne are prepared to similar to how they nicked Melksham off us but I don't see it.

I really don't think we have room for any more talls on our list without cutting another tall, and since most of them are really young, you'd be cutting a guy who isn't fully developed just for the sake of hitting the reset button. We have the most players over 195cm of any team (equal most with Sydney), plus a few 193/194cm listed players who play taller (Laverde, Francis, Hurley, Baldwin, Voss?).

Forward: Michael Hurley (31)
Ruck: Andrew Phillips (30)
Defender: James Stewart (28)

Forward: Peter Wright (25)
Defender: Jayden Laverde (25)
Forward: Aaron Francis (24)
Defender: Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (23)
Defender: Jordan Ridley (23)
Ruck: Sam Draper (23)

Ruck: Cian McBride (20)
Ruck: Nick Bryan (20)
?: Nik Cox (19)
Defender: Zach Reid (19)
Defender: Cody Brand (19)
Forward: Harrison Jones (19)
Forward: Josh Eyre (19)
Forward: Kaine Baldwin (19)
?: Patrick Voss (18)

That's almost half our list, and given we also have a lot of mids now taking up another large chunk of the list, there's no wonder we have stuff all depth in small forwards and defenders.

well i mean if Francis and co don't learn to kick straight soo n suppose i wouldn't be opposed to cutting them.

I think a major goal this year as a club is filtering through our tall stocks to see who is worth keeping and who isnt.

For example, if Cox and Reid project as key defenders, do we need both Brand AND BZT going forward as KPD depth with Stewart, Laverde and Ridley on the list?
Or, going forward, is having BZT and Stewart just going to take valuable game time at VFL and senior level away from Reid/Cox/Brand in KPD posts and so do we want to cut bait with one as holdover depth.

And up forward what the hell have we got? We have Baldwin (19), Eyre (20) and McBride (20) who we know bugger all about whether any are viable long term options.
Jones looks the part but just can't stay on the park and how long do we carry Francis forward if it isn't even his best position (which is 3rd tall defender btw)? Wright is probably the only locked in KPF we have right now.

So we have a lot of quantity, but a lot of question marks about quality. I would expect there will be a bit of a cull of our KPP stocks this year with a few OOC.

Also, if we have a top 8 pick and an Aaron Naughton/Ben King type is available (Naughton was pick 9, King pick 6 for reference), I dont think there is any KPF on our list that is talented enough to make me feel comfortable passing on him at his point

We have a lot of questions in regard stocks our KPPs going forward, and one of our major priorities for me this year is figuring out who is worth keeping and who isnt, because our list balance is out of whack as you said.

Hey all! Bit behind everyone else on starting a thread but that's because I'm still pretty far behind on this draft in comparison to others. Have done a lot of catching up this month and have a top 20 that I'm relatively happy with

As always, I have my own biases (In particular WA and Tasmania) as well as blindspots (Haven't had the ability to attend any practice games out of state, haven't watched too much of the allies with the exception of Tasmanian games) so my top 20 isn't perfect

Names I really like in this draft include Kobe Ryan (I'm probably the only person to have him in top 5, but was continually impressed everytime I saw him), Jackson Broadbent (Best ruck in a draft since Luke Jackson), Sam Gilbey, Tyson Walls, Conrad Williams and Jack Cleaver

I don't think any of the Tassie boys are first round material this year, players like Lachie Cowan, Seth Campbell and Cameron Owen SHOULD all get drafted, but I'm not sure on them going top 20

Looking forward to another great year of draft watching 🥳
