Im all for the Bowes trade, but not necessarily because of Bowes but because of pick 7

Hed be starting behind all the guys i mentioned and look i dont mind if hes the midfielder in the VFL

Why dont you think Hobbs can be a full time mid? I think he can. The issue is probably that Parish, Shiel, Merrett will still be preferred in the stoppages but a new set of eyes as coach could change that i suppose

Think if were around the 2-6 or 3-5 mark after round 8 and Hobbs is looking good then he moves in there and Shiel/Zerrett reduce the cba time

Hobbs will be a full-time mid, but it's rare to see a 2nd year player playing full-time on-ball minutes as an Inside Midfielder, Oliver & Cripps are the only two that spring to mind. I'd plan for his 3rd season onwards to be doing that.

Likely he'll do similar to this year where he plays forward & midfield but with more midfield minutes than he had this year.

I might need a measurement for a tinfoil hat, but if De Goey decides to go to the Saints, I cant imagine a world where Collingwood don't match. They are signing McStay on a healthy deal which will affect compensation coming back, and so I can see them matching and forcing a trade with the Saints (where pick 9 has to be involved surely?).

In that circumstance, does Collingwood come after Parish? They are in the market for a clearance mid and with losing De Goey and Grundy would all of a sudden have the required cap space. They have also hunted Parish the last two times he has signed an extension with us so we know they like him.

It would depend on the new coach, but if he isnt all too keen on our midfield mix, perhaps a deal surrounding pick 9 (from De Goey), 16 and their F2 for Parish and 22?
It would grease the wheel for a hypothetic Bowes trade if he nominates (and we could make a good sell with $$$ space and a midfield spot open) as well I imagine if we have two F2s to pass to them for Bowes and 7.

Like I said tin foil hat stuff with a LOT of variables, but yeah.

I hope you’re right.

Edit: I reckon their F2 might be a little too much to hope for. But 9 and 16 for 22 and Parish would be sick

I wouldnt think so, if you consider the pick slide from 16 to 22 is the equivalent of pick 54, it's essentially
Parish for 9, F2 and 54.

From what I understand, prospects 15-25 in this draft could be put in a bag, shaken up, and you wouldn't be able to pick the different in quality. Pick 16 would likely just be traded anyway for more future capital.

I don’t think you can measure slide backs with points. The true cost is the group of players unavailable to the team sliding back.

No idea, just listening to Barrett on trade radio and reading between the lines
Edmunds said yesterday Bombers and cats are leading the race. GCS list manager said today it will be up to Bowes to choose a club, but Bowes is currently overseas so won’t be making a call until he returns and meets with suitors.

I think it’s worth noting that Barrett has a pathological bias against Essendon.

I think we're behind both but both likely require him to spread that cash out over extra years and both have stronger midfields to break into.

don't expect us to get him, but damn 7 would be nice.

If spreading the cash was a possibility, surely he just stays at the suns? How he gets more opportunity at the cats or lions than the suns is beyond me. Especially with the lions bringing in Dunkley.

The Cats will offer him 4 years I think and will plan to spread his deal over the 4 years, the 2 extra years will probably half of what he's paid next year. They'll try pay him 600x4, We should pay him 800x2 and then 5-600x3

We have the money to over pay I think we should blow the Cats offer out of the water, Bowes and 7 is a cracking deal.

That deal means that essentially, Bowes will be paid what he’s owed plus 300k/year for the last two years of the contract (lower than the average AFL salary). Not a great deal.

We should pay the 1.6m owed in 2023/24 plus add two years at 600k/season for the last two years.

That's why I don't get these "spread the deal over X" hypotheticals. Basically all of them having Bowes taking way less money than he'd get on his current deal and could potentially get with an extension.

Is he that desperate to get to Geelong?

Im happy to offer 2.8mill (Extra 100k a year over 4 years) should be fairly substantial

As long as we can put 2 mill over the next 2 years into our cap, which it seems we can easily do

We could test the Cats keenness on Bowes & getting a few trades done in one hit.

Ess in: Bowes' Salary, Pick 7, Pick 15
Geel in: Bowes
GCS in: Cats 2023 2nd & Ess 2023 3rd
Bris in: Ess 2022 2nd, Frem 2022 2nd (via GCS)

Ess In: Pick 14, F2 (Tied North/19), F3 (Tied North/37), Pick 41
Ess Out: Pick 8 and pick 23

Melb In: Pick 8 and F1 (Freo)
Melb Out: L.Jackson + Pick 41

Freo In: L.Jackson + Pick 23

A.Davey
Pick 5 (2023 strong draft?)
