How do we take a risk on someone as a club who doesn’t draft inside midfielders, cannot develop inside midfielders and doesn’t seem to have any respect for them.

There have been a myriad of other missed opportunities to address the hole that Setterfield will fill but because we haven’t filled it then it essentially becomes a straight shoot between him and Mathieson.

You're answering you question in a strange way. He ain't that.

He's the perfect player for our dumb arse list boss.

He basically fre and he's tall. It doesn't really matter how he plays.
I mean look, if he comes cheap as chips then I wouldn't say no.

But it amazes me to think people were excited at the prospect of getting him all those years ago, and so disappointed when he chose Carlton, because he's shown three fifths of **** all.

That 2020 draft really looks average after pick 10. I know its early still but looks like a bad group. I think Ried amd Perkins will be good and continue to develop. Cox is the one I'm really unsure of, I guess not seeing him play for like a year doesn't help.

You cannot argue with Setterfield for absolutely nothing.

At minimum he will apply selection pressure an absolutely slay the two’s next year.
This. What have we got in the twos besides not much at all. We need the depth. Hopefully this is one of those 'moneyball' options. I think that's the lingo.

Who even knows with cox.
Could end up anywhere
Im certain that if Rutten had of stayed his confidence wouldve continued to take a hit. He needs to settle where he can utilise his strong assets (leap, dexterity, flair)....playing wing last year where he continually got caught with the ball nearly bloody destroyed him. Epitome of a deer in headlights...hopefully we see the best of him and he doesn't fitter away. Im nervous on his behalf

It's an ambitious idea, Kennedy was 22 when he went to Sydney, Setterfield will be 25 before a ball is bounced next year. Before this year he didn't have Cerra and Hewett to deal with, Matt Kennedy only came good in the last month of 2021. He's had plenty of chances to show his worth and even in the games he has played well, he hasn't demonstrated the attributes that successful inside midfielders have, even in patches. It's a low risk low reward pick.
As I said, ‘we can only hope’. There’s not a lot of real big volume of consistent form to go by. I am actually a bit surprised that he’ll be 25 already. I think he can play a role.

Not sure we're in a position to be too picky tbh. Fact is players aren't banging down the door to come to the Hangar. If it's Setterfield for a bag of chips, Stocker and Narkle for nothing whilst keeping pick 4 and 22, with the Davey's coming I'll take it and run. We need depth. Won't be dissapointed at all if it happens.

Are Hawthorn wanting to salary dump Mitchel, or are they hoping to pay his salary so someone gives up a pick to have him for free?

Are there any other salary dumps going around? That extra draft pick would be a great use of our salary cap.
If by end of the trade period we haven't filled the cap then I think you ring Selwood up and offer him a ton of coin to come to the club for a year. Would be amazing to have him help Scott build culture. Imagine Selwood and Haynes, such great leaders.

He retired saying he couldn't give 100% and would never want to play if he couldn't give 100%. I agree with you that he could help with culture, but coming on a junket for a year could end up having the opposite effect.

If he was pushed and felt like he had another year in him and wanted to prove the point, then that would be different.

Also he ain't tarnishing that legacy.
Will be mayor of geelong one day

This is the first year that he's really done anything at VFL level.

As I said above I'd rather take a risk on someone who might make it rather than someone who won't.
So possibly we’re getting him when he’s finally putting something together?

I’ll admit it’s not a huge chance, but he fills a need and I’d rather him than, for example, Ham.

He’s okay when he’s actually played onball. Terrible on a wing
Honestly don't see it with him.

Why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't it be neither?

It can be. I’m just fine spending low on a mature inside midfielder who’s shown better form toward the end of this year than he’s ever shown and young enough to make something of it in a position of need for us. I personally think it’s as likely or more likely to succeed than using the draft pick.
