Setterfield is whatever to me. It’s encouraging that we are looking to fill the need, but it really stinks of “we couldn’t get A, B or C, guess we just take what’s left.”

So possibly we’re getting him when he’s finally putting something together?

I’ll admit it’s not a huge chance, but he fills a need and I’d rather him than, for example, Ham.

Is this the definition of a false dichotomy? It is legal to delist Ham AND not trade for Setterfield.

Having said that, if the coach wants to try him out with a 2 year (that we could afford to pay out at the end of one year if he doesn't work out) then I'm happy for the club sign him up, providing he's free.

I must say I've not ever had my eye on him like some of the old timers around here. So, watching this highlights reel says to me his disposal is elite, unless it is really inconsistent.

Also, why hasn't he had a crack on-ball? Is he just not up to it or behind some of the on-ball superstars at Carlton?

I get a sneaky suspicion that Myers was coming good, then injury => year ban => injury put that to bed. Perhaps at 24, it is worth a two-year risk.

I think I've talked myself into it! lol

I'd rather go all in on Sheezel go others in the PSD or walk ons.
In this game they play Sheezel through the middle. Big tough body, quick hands, elite field kicking, will win you a contest 1 on 1 on the wing. Basically the opposite of Ham.

Yeah, Sheezel is the one I want too. Like a far, far better version of Perkins.

You're answering you question in a strange way. He ain't that.

The Carlton fans I trust rate him on the inside, they’re just appreciative that he was down in the pecking order for that inside role and that they also cherry picked Acres to play that winger that can invert inside role as well. He essentially finds himself at GWS again leaving for more opportunity and a younger team with more gaps and more opportunities to make a mark.

Like I said, bridging player young in a position of need that’s young enough to play significant footy for us. Green ticks all round.

As an esteemed Carlton fan and sibling of a disgusting Essendon supporting older brother... I figured I would add my 2c. Setterfield... He's a bit of a Kmart Callum Mills. Negates his opponent while collecting his own ball. Isn't too flash and doesn't do much that catches your eye but at the end of the game you look at the stat sheet and see their best midfielders been pretty ordinary and Setterfields got his 20-25 touches and 5-6 tackles. He's defensive minded and a bit of an unassuming character, but you rarely if ever sit back and think he's squibbed a contest or done a half arsed tackle when you watch him on TV unlike some others. He's reliable in that regard.

Unfortunately under the clueless clown that was Teague (Who mind you also delisted Matt Kennedy and we've seen how that panned out this year) he had Setterfield trim down to play a defensive wing role similar to Angus Brayshaw in Melbournes premiership year. That is not his game. He's an inside mid. Under Voss I think he saw the line up of midfielders and decided to continue with the Wing experiment knowing opportunity would simply not be there for him.

As a result Setterfield's been left a lanky cheese stick with a really good tank and still a fair bit of strength given his natural size but realistically he should be about 6-8kgs heavier to really take it up to best inside midfielders in the comp and add to his strength over the ball.

A comparison...

Now there's arguments to be made about whether he'll ever reach Callum Mills levels of effectiveness and leadership, but he's a good kick, naturally reads stoppages, great tackler and imo if he had some added muscle would be able to use his height and strength far better around the ball and be able to get his arms free easier to release players which is what he excels at. He's also one of our best kicks inside 50... Not a great field kick in general as he lacks penetration but he weights his kicks to leading forwards very well. A bit slow and you definitely won't see him bursting out of a pack like Nat Fyfe, but he's mobile enough to play his role and stay next to his opponents in congestion.

Overall I think he'd be a good pick up for you, we unfortunately just won't be able to find a place for him given our midfield squad at the moment and he'd be sitting around waiting for injuries to get his chance. He's not a great wing, he can chop out as a half back but not amazingly... However, you don't want him anywhere near the forward line. That's not his go.

Don’t say things I like, it confuses me…..

But that’s exactly what you should do if you can’t get A,B & C. Get a bargain D.

Thank god that after getting burned by Dunkley etc we haven’t thrown high picks and money at a plan D player. That’s what I would have seen Essendon do previously.

And just a reminder.. this time last year Will Brodie would have been seen in the same light as Setterfield. Brodie was pushed out by the Suns! Doesn’t get more lowly than that.

Seriously though that club is a dumpster fire of list strategy & judgement on players. Wright, Brodie, the pick 7 idiocy this year. I know others have said this but couldn’t they have got like… a LOT more value in the Bowes exchange? Split 7 and packaged Bowes with a late first instead?

Saying that picks don’t matter to GC is insane. Of course a club would want the players they draft this year to be as good as possible. So why not try harder on Bowes? Just seems absolutely embarrassing.

Yeah, as I said I'm glad we are targeting the need but I'm just a little bit disappointed that we couldn't land A, B or C.

GC & GWS are youth development facilities for the rest of the league, it's like the NBA teams doing the draft n stash with the Euro league players. I bet every team watches who they pick hoping it's a player from their state.

North & ESS burn talent. A case of what could have been. However Scott did get maximum value out of Norths shit lists. I really think he over achieved.

Geelong & Sydney are best with the development of their players. I still remember seeing Jimmy Bartel doing extra sessions with Mitch Duncan after training finished on StMarys oval. Bartel never got paid extra for the effort, also whilst others like Stevie J or Ablett shot out of there. I wonder if any of our players do that sort of thing with the younger players.

True, but at our stage of development I would rather a cheap D than pay too much for A, B & C. We need to develop through the Draft as much as possible and see how the current list respond next year. Players that don't "buy in" this time need to be let go.

By the end of next year Heppell will be gone & Scott/coaching panel will be much better placed to top up pressing needs.

Hope we see much more midfield minutes for Hobbs next year.

Brodie would have still been a mess for us. Works for them as Brayshaw and Serong balance out his game. For as long as we have a combination of Parish, Merrett and Shiel in there, we aren't fixing our midfield.

Agree, though the deal with 19 would have been handy.
Similarly bowes and 7. Get the depth and a taller mid. But mainly bank a pick in a rebuild.

Setterfield i like. Still think we need another one and I'd be staying in bowes' ear if the cats cant get the trade done.

Those two would fill roles in the side.
