Brodie would have still been a mess for us. Works for them as Brayshaw and Serong balance out his game. For as long as we have a combination of Parish, Merrett and Shiel in there, we aren't fixing our midfield.

And we're not fixing it so it really should be that much of a leap to accept that we just didn't try that hard with Bowes.

Does anyone seriously think he's taking half the money to be depth at Geelong of we're offering him a clear place in the best 22?

Is this the definition of a false dichotomy? It is legal to delist Ham AND not trade for Setterfield.

Having said that, if the coach wants to try him out with a 2 year (that we could afford to pay out at the end of one year if he doesn't work out) then I'm happy for the club sign him up, providing he's free.

I must say I've not ever had my eye on him like some of the old timers around here. So, watching this highlights reel says to me his disposal is elite, unless it is really inconsistent.

Also, why hasn't he had a crack on-ball? Is he just not up to it or behind some of the on-ball superstars at Carlton?

I get a sneaky suspicion that Myers was coming good, then injury => year ban => injury put that to bed. Perhaps at 24, it is worth a two-year risk.

I think I've talked myself into it! lol

Setterfield is a horrendous get for you guys. The bloke should be sponsored by Western Star. I'll give him less than a qtr before he shirks his first contest.

Not having a crack just genuinely baffled he's being given another go.

I’m actually quite baffled you think that someone might not want to go to the Cats and be a coat tails guy.

He could play like 3 games next year and be an emergency in all the finals they play and still look back and think he’s unequivocally made the right move.

Altruistic motives don’t really get you anywhere most of the time.

Setterfield is good VFL midfield depth. I would have waited for Carlton to delist him first though
He’s costing us nothing tho… if you go to the Garret McDonagh thread you will see plenty of people saying pick 50 is a nothing pick. There for us trading a pick in the 60s for Setterfield is all the same as picking him up as a dfa 🤷‍♂️

I think we had a serious crack and failed. We are likely trying to find a way to spend an extra mil to meet the minimum even with banking the extra 5%. On player alone I'd prefer Bowes over Setterfield even at the price difference, let alone the addition of pick 7.

I'm not against grabbing Setterfield, as long as we play him inside. If we get him and continue to play him on a wing then don't bother.

Either way, it's a step up from Ham

You think he wants to be a wash up at 27/28 and about 100 games with a flag or a 250 game player with as much chance as anyone else of winning a flag in the next 8 to 10 years?

Unless he's not particularly serious about a career in which case he will be found out pretty quickly.

Many need to move beyond this idea that nothing good can happen because of David Barham. Self flagellation might feel like an insight but it isn't.

Like I've posed above. The new president of Carlton tortured Teague while chasing Clarkson and Lyon and missed both. They even had Lyon essentially appointed before some non football rubbish took hold. They then terminated a white ant CEO. It was a slightly less messy period.

They signed Hewett as a free agent and traded in Cerra, probably the biggest name who moved last year. They brought in Young.

All of that was done because of their football operation. We made a luke warm attempt at Hewett who chose a basket case over a side that won 12 games and played finals because we couldn't sell a place in the midfield.

The most straight forward explanation when all we're doing is signing the mediocre player we've been linked to since we had pick 1 in 2016 is that the footy is business as usual.

I just don't understand the bowes and GC approach. They could split 7 and still rid themselves of bowes contract.

But we move on. In terms of our cap space I'd rather spend money on Haynes + a pick then setterfield or look at Georgiadis, tom green and offer overs and a long term contract.

They had basically the same season end as we had this year.

We didn't need Hewett. We didn't need Bowes. We have clear form.
Unfortunately Carlton are a lot further into their rebuild than we are. Not sure we can be compared to them.

This time last year they still had the spine of McKay, Curnow, Cripps, Walsh and Weitering.

We are going into 2023 with most likely the youngest list in the AFL. Could be some short term pain before we rise up the ladder (I hope I’m wrong)

The most straightforward explanation is that your mind likes to create conspiracy theories to generate a complex explanation to a simple problem.

Essendon is a very unappealing destination right now. Bowes is looking at Geelong playing guys like Selwood, Duncan, Dangerfield and Smith knowing that within 2 years they’ll all be gone, at a club that’s been amazingly successful and well run for almost 2 decades now.

Alternatively he can come to Essendon with a bunch of young midfielders, no CEO, and no history of consistent success.

Hewett saw that Carlton had a completely bare cupboard of midfielders beyond Cripps and Walsh and knew he’d get great opportunity for midfield minutes. He was right.

There’s no conspiracy, there’s no Essendon avoiding players or not trying hard enough. 20 years of mediocrity is a hard sell, ask North.

I actually think Setterfield would be a great signing imo, we desperately need inside mids that provide height. He’s never had the opportunity to play his suitable position his whole career, and he was a top 5 pick. He was also from that 2016 draft class where if you look at the depth now, it’s crazy good.
He played inside mid round 22 and round 23 against Melbourne & Collingwood and had career best games. This could be will Brodie mark II. Even if he doesn’t live up to expectations, he only have cost a pick in the 60’s. I have a great feeling about this guy, he’s got good disposal by foot and he’s been played out on a wing, half back flank. He’s still young at 24 and he was a bombers supporter growing up.

Oh and imagine the meltdown at Carlcsum when we utilise Setterfield to his strength, they’ll be spewing. Plus if we can add Sheezel/Wardlaw Davey Twins, a player from pick 22 and Munkara, this will be a great offseason to address a lot of wholes in our squad, whilst still having a war chest to attract free agents.

Agreed!

Looks like not much happening this trade period.
