The way things stand, we’re not going to be able to take any of these delisted free agents without cutting into the out of contract players that we want to retain (in my view anyway).

Can a smart person please give us the state of play on our list and our options? Particularly noting pick 22, alwyn jnr and Munkera (sp?). Thanks eth-dog 😀

Right now we have 4 senior list spots available. If we cut Waterman and Ham that gives us 6 and then we can use 4, 22 and the rest to match bids.

The below 'current state of play' opinion piece found on another site, seems about right. A few points to add:

1. Ham, Eyre & Waterman appear to be the three most obvious/likely NOT to receive new contracts IMO, potentially creating two additional names to our Seniors list outs (see below) + 1 Cat. A rookie spot.
2. Scott IMO would want to be absolutely sure that Tippa (29, unfit & relatively overweight last time I checked) is mentally & physically ready for possibly the biggest challenge of his playing career, before committing a senior list spot for him. Having said that, Tippa could become a great role model & mentor for both the Davey twins & Munkara up forward and am fairly certain that would have already been discussed i.e., as part of his role.
3. As already mentioned, believe Stocker to be the pick of the DFA (at least for Essendon's current Senior list) & an excellent upgrade/replacement for Ham (singled out Ham instead of Eyre or Brand due to positional similarities). Stocker fits the bill in terms of Brad Scott's vision for building lasting success with a young & talented group over time.

----------------

'Just in case anyone else is like me and hasn’t been completely straight on the current state of play with our list:

LIST MOVEMENTS

Senior List

Out
5 - Smith
10 - Francis
12 - Cutler
18 - Hurley
36 - McDonagh
43 - McDonald-Tipungwuti

Rookie
CatA - no confirmed outs - but Jye Menzie only had a spot due to the Long Term Injury list - if gets a contract it will take up a vacant spot and being de-listed won’t create a new spot.
Cat B - Out
49-Hird

UN-CONTRACTED PLAYERS
Senior List

32-Eyre
33-Ham
38-Brand

Rookie list
Cat A
45-Waterman
47-Menzie - only Long Term Injury List Spot - so will need to fill a vacant spot to stay.
Cat B
41-McBride

INS
Senior:
Setterfield
Weideman
Rookie:
(D’Ambrosio - only having a LTIL spot previously and now contracted)

Open senior list vacancies
6 senior outs - 2 senior and 1 Rookie ins (replacing Walla’s senior spot) =
3 - definite senior vacancies

3 potential senior vacancies - 3 un-contracted senior players

Rookie vacancies
Cat A
1 potential vacancy with 2 un-contracted rookies - but Jye Menzie only having a place due to the Long Term Injury List - which was only for 2022.

Cat B
1 definite vacancy
1 potential vacancy with 1 un-contracted Irishman

Potential Ins

Father Son
Alwyn Davey Jnr
Jayden Davey

NGA
Anthony Munkara

All are probable senior list players who would likely attract a selection from another team.

Possible return from retirement - not necessarily Essendon
McDonald-Tipungwuti
McKenna

Jye Menzie - who has neither a contract or a list spot for 2023

Draft picks:
4, 22, 54, 62, 68, 72

Summary:
We will use pick 4 and if we can get the Daveys and Munkara, we are short at least one confirmed senior list spot for the draft. We will use #4 before Alwyn needs to be picked, but if Alwyn goes before our pick 22 and Munkara and Jayden need pick 54 and 62, we may only use pick 4 for another player in the draft, so at least one of the uncontracted players will need to go, and any further draft picks used for players in addition to the Daveys or Munkara will require an uncontracted player to be let go.

If we are going for DFA’s like Stack or Stocker, obviously the uncontracted senior listed players may be in the firing line for this.

I don’t think there is much practical difference between senior and rookie listed players these days besides the 3 year limit, so I don’t think any players need to be promoted.

The other wild card is if Walla or McKenna want to come back on our list we would obviously need vacancies for them.

So it is little wonder that we still have 3 senior listed players and 2 rookie listed players without contracts.

Edit: Thanks @jonovdp for the additional considerations you allude to below and which I have fixed above -

Massimo D’Ambrosio and Jye Martin were added as a result of putting Nic Cox and Walla on the Long Term Injury List, so Massimo’s contract actually cancels out the vacancy created by Walla’s retirement, so there is only 3 list spots left - not the 4 as I indicated above - given Massimo has taken Walla’s vacant spot and Cox coming back cancels the spot created for Menzie (so if Cox isn’t retained it won’t create a vacancy and if he is retained in will take a list spot).

So we are looking 1 of the uncontracted players going at least (not including Menzie).

Who it is will depend on who we get in and how the list balance is looking. It is easier to think of Menzie as a potential listing like the Daveys, Munkara, Walla or McKenna, not so much an uncontracted player, given he doesn’t actually have a spot to keep.

A further wild card is that Jayden Davey is coming back from multiple knee surgeries and may be considered for the long term injury list, potentially freeing up a place.'

Currently have 40 (42 max allowed). So 2 spots open currently pre further delistings

Ham and Waterman delisted means we have 4 spots open with 38/42 occupied

Then the next 3 in danger are Menzies, Eyre and Brand. If we delist all 3 we have 35/42 with 7 spots open

So yes any DFA additions right now isnt really an option. Id say we would like to enter national Draft with 5 spots open. Allowing potentially for 4, 22, Davey, Davey, Munkara.

Delisting atleast 2 of Eyre, Brand or Menzies certainly puts us in the picture of having access to a DFA like Stocker. Although we may prefer to commit to re rookie any of these 3 delisted

We need to delist 1 of the 3 to have access to the points for pick 68, which should come in to low 60s with the Ashcroft bid

Nic Martins to obvious choice for me as the bombers next superstar … he has it all in spades…. Needs to be developed … he could be anything

once he gets another 5-10 kgs of muscle kid will be a superstar

I really hope we are looking at a trade with the saints along the lines of 4 plus 22 for 9 and a future first (+ any if needed late pick for Davey points).

Walking away with a phillipou/mackenzie/ginbey/clarke + a future first range (4-10) would be amazing outcome for us.

Saints have said they want to move up. Seems like a chance at a win/win.
That’s a horrible trade.

I still think West Coast would trade picks 8 and/or 12 for picks in next year's draft.
There is a lot of WA talent next year.

I'd like us to trade our next years first for their picks 8 and 12.

You shouldn’t future trade with a side that can realistically make finals the following year. Saints could bounce make the 8 next year. I wouldn’t do 4 for 9 and a f1 off them by itself let alone adding in the 22 on top.
Saints are unlikely to make the eight next year there are at least 10 teams that are more likely to make finals.

All the 2022 finalists plus Carlton and Port Adelaide.

The Saints are just as likely to finish bottom 6 as top 8.

No one knows how they’ll go that’s the point. It’s not like you’re trading for north’s or hawthorns pick where you know it’ll be a top 6-7 pick guranteed.

Depends on how much we rate Tsatas.
If we rate Hollands or McKenzie around the same, one of those are likely to be available.

Picking up a F1 that could be anywhere between 7-11 next year would be great. If it was something like
9 + F1 + 47
4 + 22

I would absolutely think about it. If Parish leaves via FA and we get first round compo, we could have 3 top 10 picks in a top 10 that everyone says is absolutely loaded.

Collingwood moreorless got poulter and McMahon for their 2021 pick 2, and both are delisted after 2 seasons.
Imagine getting Daicos and Callaghan. Bloody hell they’d be in a good position.

Ah so I think the player you’d get with 9 this year is extremely comparable with that of 4. Like I’d rank them in stars.

Sheezel , Cadman and Wardlaw 4 star recruit (meant to be 1-3). I rate Philippi as a 4 star also who might be at 9.

But then like clark, Tsatas I all put in a 3 star bucket. After 10 it drops off

(Note the stars are just there to convey the tier not a point I’m trying to actually make in their star value).

I disagree with you that you don’t trade with someone that could bounce back or make finals. Trading future first is a bet. I think saints is ina group of teams (as are we) that will land between bottom 4 to squeezing into 8th. They however will have a harder draw than those with similar lists.

In what is a ‘strong draft’ next year, getting a additional pick of 4-10 is amazing for me.

I’ll ask you this as this is closer to how I see it. would you prefer Tsatas or 2 of clarke, gibben, phillipou (2 in that 5-9 range)?
