Yeah I wouldn’t say that quite yet, perhaps a bit slim after the best 3 kids at the top end but I currently have players I want to fit into my top 20 and it’s a logjam. We should get a better reading on the whole draft crop this year after the National championships.
I know it's early, but I Isaac Keeler a shout at our pick?

The current draft crop is quite weak due to the drop off in Victorian players. Covid lockdowns effectively cost them two years of development.
Talk to a few of the Nab League coaches and they are saying it has actually worked as far as the more resilient / dedicated players have stuck to their training etc. They got half a season last year and are getting a full season this year. They will be in front of last years draft crop as far as getting games and time in the system.

Id be ok with taking our first (3) and second (21) and hope we can snare Davey Jnr after that second (doubtful) but a man can dream.

Sounds like another reasonable KPP draft at the pointy end so wouldn't mind looking at a super talented KPF with our first.
I suspect our first is not going to be top 5 myself.

I am all aboard that Angus Brayshaw as a FA train.

We need;

(a) leaders with a team first mentality :heavycheck:
(b) Quality inside mids :heavycheck:
(c) someone decent to absolve a hefty pay check so we're not overpaying scabs on the list :heavycheck:

After watching Brayshaw go about it last night, he is a perfect fit for our team. Unsure on the (Callan?) Ward talk earlier in this thread. Would we really be interested in a soon to be 33 year old?

On talent he is right up there but not sure he has the application to get the most out of it at the next level. I wouldn’t use a first round pick on him at this stage.

1. He wasn't actually a DFA
2. We made an offer
3. He chose to go to Melbourne

Sometimes you can make an offer but they choose to go elsewhere

Nah no offer was made to him from Essendon. As per the Stan documentary, Melbourne was the only club that made an offer. Dodoro didn't know where he would fit into the side, while Melbourne actually went to him with a impressive presentation and acknowledged that they had been kissed on the dick with their injuries, and knew he could play a role for them in 2022 & 2023.

Two clubs basically recruiting in two different sports.

Top 5 no way he gets anywhere near this.
If he continues the way he is and he makes top 5 then it may be okay for us if we trade out our first (if it s in the top 5) for another second and later pick. Alwyn Jnr , two second round picks plus a third and maybe two fourths. Of course if we finish bottom 5 it would be better if we could use our first pick and then get Davey. I suppose another option is use the early first on a trade and then burn the points on the latter picks but I think we need to bring in at least 4 draft age players.

I hope we're into mcstay. Need a second marking forward.

Pipedream but brayshaw, dale and dunkley or taranto would be nice
We will need them just to make the salary cap minimum!

You'd think Hurley and Heppell retire. Probably Walla as well. Smith maybe retires with a year left. Nobody doing anything to earn a pay rise. It's going to be some creative accounting to reach the minimum.

In years gone by, I would've loved Dunks or Taranto but honestly now think we should use our draft capital on either someone super young (<21) or just hit the draft and bring in established players through FA.

McStay is a good player but would honestly think there are better uses of our money. 6 years reportedly on offer, fuaa I wouldn't be doing that.

We could look to take on another player with a heavy contract, in exchange for draft picks, if the opportunity arises. For some reason, we seem to be tight on draft picks, although we really shouldn't be for a bottom 5 side.

What is the difference between what McCartney did with hill and our list mismanaged did with daniher?
Well at the time our whole gameplan/list/hopes were centred around Daniher. We weren't ready to even think about what we would do if he left. We started to move on when we drafted harry jones, recruited Peter Wright, and we let Joe go as a free agent the next year. Bobby Hill had nowhere near the importance to GWS list makeup as Joe did to us. McCartney hates Dodoro since the Stringer deal. Its not a secret. Dodoro has let multiple players go to other clubs easily, i cant think of many that he's held against their will.

As another thought, I wonder what Langford would get as a free agent. Don't flame me, as I haven't put a lot of thought into it. We seem to have that flanker wing position well covered.
There might be the need to go a little Ned guy on the list to get some draft capital. But doubt langford gets above band 2.
At this rate, could be a top 20 pick

i don’t agree with any of this tripe
the simple fact is if a player is contracted the club has the right to keep the player

We dont disagree on that. You asked me what the difference in situation was between Daniher and Hill though. If you cant see a difference between the 2 then we disagree on that.

McStay yes please. Fills a big need.

Daniel Mcstay? No thanks.

We need to get really creative with our drafting and trading. No player should be off limits for a trade. Our list is not even close to having a winning season let alone winning a final. It shouldn’t matter who is under contract or not. Even if we have to pay a large amount of Shiel’s contract, he has to go. He isn’t a match winner and that’s the salary range he is in. The only thing we don’t trade are draft picks. Our first pick will be in the range of 1-3 and we should get a good player here. From now on the club has to be brutal and stop being the nice fellows that we are.
