I was thinking about this the other day actually. We seem really content with our back 6, almost like it is set in stone but then make you think, what do each player bring? Redman on his day is a runner who can deliver decently forward of centre but we don't see it nearly as much as we deserve.

A fan favourite so feels ike he escapes criticism

It's not set in stone at all. Clearly they weren't content at the end of last year, and got Kelly in, he has played 6 games, Reid comes in this week for his second game, Hind was omitted last week. It's far from set in stone and you literally just have to look at the team and see that.

Probably right, and maybe indicative of how I perceive Mason, after all, he has been almost the most exclusively selected of that back 6 / 7 (with Jordan Ridley) in the past 3 years or so.

We currently have over half our list - or 24 of the 44 players on our list without a contract in 2023..!!
This includes McGrath, Perkins, Cox, Langford, Guelfi, Reid, Stewart, Waterman, Francis and Hind to name a few….
There’s going to be some big changes to the list in 2023 and I feel like it will look much different.

Good

Ha ha but what about all those finals we've won ha ha.

On the current list I can see Parish, Stringer, Caldwell, Redman, Kelly, Perkins, Draper & Durham as types who wouldn't go missing. Would say Merrett but he's already participated in a few disasters.
it's a no from me.

brilliant player, constantly injured, burned us once with unreliable commitment.

not sure that he thrives in highly contested, finals style footy either

I was going by your original comment about thriving in highly contested finals style footy. None of the players do. You saw it last year when the game was up in the air early in the 3rd quarter, 7 games ago. They don't even do it in the regular season, this is not how the team plays.

Snelling aside, none from mid to forward.

That’s completely normal at every club every year. Doesn’t mean anything except that they have to dance for their dinner.

Wasn't it "heads, shoulders, knees & toes" wiggles style?

Thanks for the reminder! I used to ride the motorbike to work, and my son at the time loved the wiggles. I couldn't listen to radio while riding so I couldn't get those damned songs out of my head all the way into work! :p

My point was setting the standards and from what it sounds like has been completely missed.

The defence sounds like it is only because it is a high profile player. If it were Joe Blow people would be calling for him to be delisted.
You obviously have zero regard for what I sent you in that PM. Sad really.
Who was the player who turned up against the Cats and blocked in the midfield only to have everyone else not show up and you wonder why he is now lacking enthusiasm to do the team stuff. Would you give 100% to play under a captain that is so far off the pace that he has resorted to cheating and directing others to pick up his man but stands in front of the media saying we are a tight group ? Would you continue to block and be happy to play less midfield time for a player that defends less than you ? The problems run a lot deeper than just one players who sadly has basically put the white flag up as no one else wants to do anything about it either.

Shiel was awful against the Cats. Perhaps he was trying to put blocks on, but he was running away from the ball Kyle Langford to the bench style. McGarth was the guy they had to bring in to attempt the defensive pressure. Even if Shiel's intention was to put on the blocks to follow the plan, common sense would dictate you attack the footy when it's in your area.

And his kicking is bush league.

How likely are Brand and Eyre to avtually become AFL players?
Like many young talls they need time, won’t know for a few more years at least.

I'm not opposed to putting McGrath, Parish and Merrett on the market at the end of the year and trying to get some draft capital back for one or two of them, ideally get a second pick inside the top 10. These guys are all into their mid-20's now and they're likely not going to be at their best by the time we're next ready to make a push for top 4 so we should be looking to shake things up. Feel very sorry for Shiel after we did everything we could to get him to the club and if he wants out I'd gladly facilitate it, whatever we get back should be enough to absorb the Alwyn bid.

Merrett won’t be put on the table after just signing a new deal. But, if Mahoney going by his Melbourne days, won’t be afraid to make the tough calls. Did with Hogan.

😆 so Heppell retires, we trade McGrath and Merrett ... who is captain in 2022?

I get the feeling there's a different vibe in the team to last year and we've regressed a bit towards 2020 where the group isn't that connected but yes, unlikely that Merrett would go. It's unlikely that any would go, but they're likely our best shot at getting an extra high draft pick this year

Whoever is left. I'm not really fussed if we miss out on Merrett or McGrath as captain next year because there's no discernible on-field leadership out there as it is. I defy anyone to explain how our leadership group are extolling the principles of the gameplan at the moment.
