Now it's time to get Stringer to Melbourne.

Get him off our books and to somewhere where he can focus on being fit by July.

He'd be a great fit for Melbourne. Kicks 40 goals just turning up.

It's a deal you just get done. Maybe even a straight swap for Jordan.

Jordon is a free agent.

I thought it would be this:

Saints: Shiel, band 1 compo

Us: Gresham and a second rounder.

Saints would then use band 1 compo for Henry

It’s being worded as a token late pick, essentially a salary dump. Don’t think we would get a second rounder

i think the hesitation about taking goldstein is pretty dumb, we saw this year that draper missed 1/2 the season and we're very lucky we still had flip on the list otherwise we'd be playing with 1 actual ruck and two taller forwards (2mp/weideman). having the depth that goldstein offers will be great worst case scenario.

i saw him play 2-3 times this year and he's still great

Correct and on top of that Bryan is still really at least a year away from being really ready to play a full season in the ruck. As much as we all want to see him develop we do not want to break him either. If Nick gets another 10 or 12 games next year he will have done well.

I think saints may be threatening to match our offer and force a trade if don’t pay band 1. And will then in turn ask for a second rounder or something
We obviously wanna keep our picks and only spend cash so that’s where the thought is but it really doesn’t seem all that great to get Shiel off the books when he only has 1 year left anyway.
I’d call that bluff any day of the week 🤣 Dodoro v Silvangi one last time

Saints don’t want Gresham and Gresham wants out of the saints

And I don’t want Gresham 😂

Did it really even hint what the pick may be? I was just guessing about what may come back our way.

Although a saints second rounder won’t be in the 20s.

If they match, they get Gresham... why do it to yourself?

For genuine KPPs we have Baldwin who has played 8 games and is undersized anyway

Hayes who is 18 and hasn't played a game

Reid who has played 8 games in 3 years and is made of paper

Perhaps Weidemann who has never played back at AFL level

There's a very good chance that none of them would work out no matter who was developing them.

I think people need to look at the reality of how bad the situation is - we're not trying to lure an average defender in McKay with an enormously oversized contract for no reason.

BTW - the forward line ain't in much better shape... thankfully we have Wright.
Reid, Cox, Hayes. Is a lot of recent top 10-25 kpd draft picks wasted if none make it or can fill one of the kpd posts. Is Reid still hope to replace the mckay role. Still worth it for McKay but best case scenario can Reid and mckay both play together?

Also much more comfortable with the money with proposed cap increases.

Think I'm still just hoping we can get some elite talent soon. Perkins and Reid were my hopes but who knows maybe someone will come from nowhere.

As we still lack genuine superstars bar merret and not sure where we get them from if not with the war chest.

We tried to get Phillips to play on Goldy is a upgrade on Phillips. Should only be used as third choice but with our injuries might mean he plays most weeks.

I’m all for the Goldy signing (rumor), but don’t love the idea of limiting Bryan’s games. Just let form dictate who plays.

If Goldy dominates and Bryan only plays 8, fine - if Bryan improves at all on his late-2023 form, let him play his 18. It’ll be his 5th year, we can’t hold him back forever.

Welcome Ben McKay to bomberland

The fifth year is really irrelevant if the player is still not physically ready to perform the role for a season. Nick still has a lot of work to do on his strength . He dominated hit outs in the VFL but was actually out bodied in contests by rucks of a similar age in some games and was not even close to some of the VFL rucks. I would prefer he not get broken by going against blokes a weight division ( figure of speech only ) above him for 20 games. We can hold him back. He will only be 22 next month. He will play games and he may well have a good enough pre season to play most games but for me I am not wanting him to be pushed harder than he needs to at this stage.

I suspect that Goldy will be coming for two years if he does. Next year to have a shot at number 1 ruck with a second year based more around coaching. I could be wrong though. Just seems that reading his comments he wants to play .

I think it’s reasonable too. Draper is under an injury cloud…and really, he’s still learning his ruck craft too. Bryan doesn’t have the tank yet to play significant game time.

Goldy is an ideal option.

I'm all for Goldy coming to us. If Draper and Bryan are fit, then I'd hope he's mostly depth - but pretty nice depth to have. We saw Draper is still prone to some injury and Bryan is still young so just having some extra insurance in the ruck would be nice. Plus I reckon his training standards to impart on the list + what he can teach Draper and Bryan is worth it alone really.

Am I missing something? Or just taking crazy pills? Why on earth would we do a hugely inflated 3 year deal for Gresham just to dump the final year of Shiels contract, only to get a token pick in return?
The Ralph article seemed to suggest we’d get Gresham and a “quality pick”, whilst St Kilda would get Shiel and not have to pay his salary.

We would want to have a plan to package the quality pick into something else you’d think.

Also, Hawks board seem to be saying that McKay has gone with Essendon?! Haven’t heard anything that suggests that.

We'd be targeting the Gresham pick we create

Saints get Shiel without paying
we get Gresham and Pick 13, but pay for Shiel
really doesn't hurt the Saints one iota.

8, 13, 27 before we count what we get for Zerk is a nice hand.

The way I read it, and obviously this isn’t concrete, is essentially

We pay Gresham a big fatty triggering band 1 compo. That creates pick 13 that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Saints trade that to us for Shiel and maybe a late pick and we pay Shiel’s entire deal.

Saints lose Gresham which they would any way but instead of getting a pick in the 30s, they get Shiel and cap flexibility and we essentially buy pick 13 by virtue of overpaying for Gresham and fronting for Shiel.

The issue is that the trade and the FA deal can’t be linked, so there’s nothing stopping us paying up for Gresham, triggering band 1 and then them turning around and saying they don’t want Shiel and they want to keep the pick once the trade period starts.
