So, Seven has lost the rights t the Australian open from 2020. Does this have implications for AFLW. Seems like there would be a bit more room to schedule the season so the GF has clear air without having to worry about 7 not wanting a clash with the tennis.

There are 11 weekends between AFL GF & Xmas.
Hot weather less of a factor
Less competition from tennis / cricket / AFLX / AFL pre-season

It is the obvious time of year for AFLW

This isn't a bad idea....you could also start it in the "pre season bye" round to have a clean launch and then play on Sundays through the finals season (likely have the GF weekend off). This would give you a 14/15 week season with a mid December GF...or alternatively you could take 5 weeks off in later december / january and finish the season in the 7 weeks before the AFL starts

9 rounds plus two weeks of finals is enough in the short term.
Start the week after the GF.

The six vic clubs are courting a young Gaelic footballer.

She's in town for the week and has already met with a few clubs.

Six AFLW sides chasing Irish dual-sports sensation

Irish dual-sports sensation Sarah Rowe arrived in Melbourne on Thursday having never kicked a Sherrin.

Up until now, the 22 year-old from Ballina, in north County Mayo, has only ever booted a round ball, both in soccer and Gaelic football.

...

Now Foxfooty.com.au can reveal all six Victorian-based AFLW clubs are prepared to offer her a contract on the spot for 2019.

That is how highly she is rated.

Having landed on Thursday morning alongside her dad Alan, Rowe spent Thursday and Friday sizing up Collingwood, Carlton and the Western Bulldogs.

Before she heads home on Wednesday, she will visit Melbourne and the newbies of the AFLW: Geelong and North Melbourne.

...

Report now is, they are still keen on a 7 week season, with maybe 2 weeks of finals. Will go down like a lead balloon if they do it.
Hope this doesn't eventuate, the one thing I liked about AFLW is the draw is somewhat fair

Last night The Footy Almanac hosted a Women's Footy Pie Night, with a women's footy panel talking issues surrounding the AFLW and VFLW.

The Panel featured Kendra Heil (Essendon VFLW footballer from Canada), Kate O'Halloran (The Guardian), Kirby Fenwick (Writer and Documentary Maker) and Lucy Watkin (Melbourne Uni VFLW footballers and ABC Grandstand media cadet).

A full recording of the panel is available in the below podcast...

An interesting website. Seems to be set up with the Western Bulldogs. Some sort of international drafting opportunity with a rookie spot at the dogs up for grabs.

This is their headline blurb

A global program that provides top female athletes a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a professional in Australia's premier football league.

I assume they're testing the waters, for the future fixture as well as whoever is negotiating the broadcast rights. And most of the media today is agreeing it sounds like a bad idea.

If channel 7 keep the rights, they will want a shorter season because they'll have tennis and cricket next year.

Considering the interest in AFLW seems to peak in the first couple of rounds each year a shorter season with finals (less dead rubbers) may not be the worst idea. Some people will never be pleased.

Can't say it's about 'dead rubbers' when 3 of the 4 games in the final H&A round last year directly impacted upon who was in the GF (and the other decided the spoon).

Really, interest in a relatively new competition tending to taper as it goes on shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The problem is the attitude that the AFLW needs to be in its own window to capture public interest, even at the expense of the basic dignity of playing everyone else in the league. Not every match has to be a blockbuster for the competition as a whole to be growing and successful (see, for example, the WBBL) - fans (and the potential new followers a shorter season supposedly targets) will lose interest if it feels like a trivial summer diversion rather than a genuine competition they can invest their support in. It's a dreadful idea both on basic integrity grounds and commercially.

Just read om ABC news that Gil is defending a plan to shorten the AFLW season to just six regular season games. Players are up in arms against it saying that it is hard to justify the sacrifices they make to play footy for that short a season. I tend to agree.
It’s a shame that the AFL are treating the women’s league this way. Women should perhaps collectively ditch the AFL competition in its current form and play in the VFLW league. That way they play a more appropriate length competition for a full season and during the winter, rather than in 30 degree heat. At least until the AFL remove their heads from their arses and give them some respect.
