Super keen for the Sydney derby as it's likely going to be my first AFLW game of the season. Can't wait to cheer the ladies on.

Maybe this victory flatters us, but I’m happy. Before the start of the season, the market had us finishing equal last, and in our entire AFLW history we had only played finals once (and got eliminated straight away). Maybe looking at our next couple of games before getting hopes up, but the signs are good!

Totally agree and I'm much the same.

I do wonder whether a large shot of confidence after today's game will go some way to assisting have a better season than was otherwise thought by the markets and the like.

I went with my daughter's team last night - I'll say, Sydney looked very good. Collingwood got a lot of chances and their goal kicking let them down, but Sydney was very clean against a strong opponent. If we put up a fight against them, I'd suggest Cam has been stooging us all preseason.

I watched the game and totally agree.

If we put up a fight against them, I'd suggest Cam has been stooging us all preseason.

I'd be happy to see this because I've expressed some reservations about the coaching.

After Sydney went from not winning a game first season, 8th last season to potentially being quite up there this season I'd like to see growth from us.

It wasn't particularly pleasant hearing the commentator expect us to be near the bottom again this season when the first game of the round hadn't even finished.

I guess it remains to be seen.

Apologies for the intrusion, as a Canberran I go to most GWS Manuka games. The Dogs were basically a one-woman team in Blackburn trying to carry the kids. Still, GWS were great and looked much better than previous years. Spread and ball use was great even with the wind. Some good run and handball chains were fun to watch. Properly put the Dogs to the sword. Zali is an absolute gun.

One Giant leap

There’ll be plenty of questions going the Dogs’ way following this game, but as far as the Giants are concerned, they did what they needed to do and won emphatically at that. The wind made it tricky at times, but it could’ve been a far greater margin.

We’ll see how they stack up in the coming weeks: Richmond next week away, followed by a home game against the Gold Coast and then the Sydney Derby in week four. But there’s a lot to like from the Giants camp going forward.

Cam Bernasconi flipped a lot of magnets around. Alicia Eva and Tarni Evans were deployed forward and looked comfortable, Izzy Huntington was used as a defender and was hard to stop with her marking hands and Eilish O’Dowd in game one was used as the number one ruck.

O’Dowd will be a story this year, a rookie-lister from Ireland, her first play in this game saw her gather a loose ball from the centre and then run it to 30 metres to drill home the Giants opening goal. She worked over Alice Edmonds in this game and was in enough space to get herself another goal during the third term from the forward pocket.

Another player we’ll be watching this year is Kaitlyn Srhoj – the number three pick in last year’s AFLW Draft showed a lot in this one, the highlight a big contested mark on Dogs captain Deanna Berry and then hitting a target inside 50 after her back was crunched hitting the turf.

The Giants dominated the Dogs off the turnover and showed enough to suggest they’ll make some strides in season 2024.

Well, the pre-season games were a bit ominous, and it was against the Bulldogs who have been ravaged by players leaving their program ... but that analysis points to progress in game style being made, and drafting/finding players who can improve the game style. A good read - well recommended.

RICHMOND has responded from a shock opening-round defeat to West Coast, holding off a fast-finishing Greater Western Sydney by 11 points. GWS launched a brave fightback from 29 points down, kicking three straight goals to give itself an outside chance of pinching victory. Despite kicking just one goal in the second half, Richmond held on to win 5.8 (38) to 4.3 (27).

The Giants dominated after half-time, but their slow start cost them any chance of going 2-0 to back up last week's demolition of the hapless Western Bulldogs. GWS had the four leading disposal winners on the ground, headlined by Alyce Parker's 26.

Doyle Set for Manuka Oval

The GIANTS have made one change ahead of their return to Manuka Oval this weekend.

Forward Jess Doyle will return to the side after missing last weekend’s match in Melbourne due to illness. The 20-year-old played a valuable role in the club’s opening round victory over the Bulldogs. Doyle returns in replace of last week’s debutant Courtney Murphy, who has been omitted.

The GIANTS will take on the Suns in a twilight fixture at Manuka Oval on Sunday at 5:05pm.

Yes, after what happened to our men yesterday, the last thing we want is another very close loss! We currently have a 1.5-1.5 record and are just half a win away from 8th spot. The Swans are 1 win - 2 losses, and are below us on the AFLW ladder. Hopefully, our ladies can ensure that our club has at least a win against Sydney Swans this year for our club.

Suns Rein In Hobbling GIANTS To Steal Draw

Injuries slowed the fast-starting GIANTS as the Gold Coast clawed back for their first premiership points of the season.

Gold Coast has snatched a dramatic draw with an injury-ravaged GIANTS side after Jamie Stanton kicked a clutch goal after the siren to secure the Suns' first points of the season.

The GIANTS appeared destined to claim a six-point win despite being down to one player on the bench, after Zarlie Goldsworthy kicked truly from a free kick at the top of the goal square late in the 5.6 (36) to 5.6 (36) draw at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

But with 30 seconds to go, Pepa Randall received a free kick, but her poor attempted pass to Tarni Evans hung in the air, allowing Daisy D'arcy to spoil it. In the subsequent chaos, GIANTS defender Katherine Smith was penalised for tackling Stanton without the ball. The veteran kicked truly to snare the two premiership points.

The GIANTS suffered a blow before Sunday evening's match with Izzy Huntington a late withdrawal with knee soreness. Then Cambridge McCormick hobbled off with assistance early in the second quarter after suffering an ankle injury, while Emily Pease also suffered an ankle injury. Then, in the third quarter, Nicola Barr required help getting off the ground after suffering what appeared to be a serious left hamstring injury after leaping for a tackle.

GIANTS skipper Rebecca Beeson (23 disposals) stood up, while Kaitlyn Srhoj (19 disposals) and Haneen Zreika (two goals) were also busy. Goals to Beeson and Zreika helped the GIANTS snatch an eight-point lead at quarter-time. The Suns dominated the second term but couldn't make it count on the scoreboard, trailing by eight at half-time. In the third term, former GIANTS captain Alicia Eva made use of the wind to kick a clutch goal and nudge the lead out to 14 points.

"I'm really proud that they actually fought their way through and still walk away with two points," GIANTS coach Cam Bernasconi said of his side's ability to play out the game after suffering the early injuries. "I think the girls will be replaying moments in their heads over the next few days and it's important that we learn from it, we improve. The key message I just said to the playing group is that last night our men's team learnt a hard lesson (in their semi-final against Brisbane). They have to wait six months to get back out there and play; we wait seven days."

The Suns (0-1-2) host Geelong next Saturday, while the GIANTS (1-1-1) play rivals Sydney away.

Kaitlyn Srhoj has been named the latest AFLW Telstra Rising Star nominee.

Talented teen, Kaitlyn Srhoj has been named the AFLW Telstra Rising Star for round three.

The 19-year-old has wasted little time impressing, earning the Rising Star nomination in just her third game of AFLW.

The versatile midfielder was busy in the GIANTS’ hard-fought draw with the Suns on Sunday, recording 20 disposals, six tackles and four clearances. With her athletic attributes and competitive nature on full display, the young gun impressed with her ferocious attack on the footy and her physical pressure on the opposition.

Five Added to Squad to take on Swans

The GIANTS have named their extended squad for Sunday’s showdown with the Swans.

The GIANTS have added five players to their squad for Sunday’s Sydney Derby, with newcomer Aliesha Newman a confirmed inclusion to make her GIANTS debut.

An exciting small forward with 59 games of AFLW experience, Newman will don the orange and charcoal for the first time after joining the club via a trade with the Swans in the summer. Known for speed and her willingness to take the game on, Newman will be sure to add a spark to the GIANTS on Sunday in her club debut as she takes on her former side for the first time.

Also added to Sunday’s extended squad is Isabel Huntington, Courtney Murphy, Annise Bradfield and Brodee Mowbray. Huntington was a late out for last week’s clash with the Suns with knee soreness but was able to train fully this week and is available for selection against the Swans. Murphy – a tall forward recruited from the Lions in the summer – will be looking to play her second game for the club after debuting against the Tigers in round two.

Meanwhile Bradfield has been named in the extended squad for the first time this season and would make her GIANTS debut should she be named in the final team of 21. Mowbray is the fifth addition to the squad, with the medium forward looking to break through for her first game of the season after completing her recovery from an ACL injury suffered last year.

Reliable defender Emily Pease has also been named in the squad after getting through training following an ankle injury sustained in last week’s draw with the Suns.

The GIANTS will name their final team for round four on Friday at 5pm.

The GIANTS and the Swans will clash for bragging rights at Henson Park at 3:05pm on Sunday in the third AFLW Sydney Derby.
