Good signs. With a young team we ran out of legs in the last.

The new players on the whole looked okay.

Prespakis belongs.
Fuller will be our number 1 ruck this year, no question.
Kearns really adds some bite.
Johnson & Emonson fitted in well in the backline.
Friswell looks like she could be a player in a few years.

Some of our senior players let us down at times today.
A bit like our men side hey lol

Good to have the AFLW back; our ''sister club'' North ultimately too good for us again today (without their best player, too) but there was a bit to like about Geelong.

Jess Duffin controlled our F50, what a gun, no one could curb her influence.
I reckon Jenna Bruton is probably the most underrated player in the comp, I have never seen her play a bad game and she was excellent as usual today.

As with last season we still struggled to hit the scoreboard for lengthy stretches - however, happily we were able to move the ball from defense reasonably well without being pinned down for minutes on end; this was a huge issue last year.
I put that down to a combination of improved fitness, allowing the girls to provide targets more regularly (and sometimes even get loose) and the addition of some good ball users like Emonson, who is slight but constructive by foot.

I owe Madeline Keryk an apology, I respectfully speculated there are others on the list who might serve us better down back moving forward, but she was as rock solid as always, if not better; very good game from her.

Kearns is bloody scary, what a psycho, crazy attack on the contest. Rawer than sushi though.

Liv Fuller is exactly what this team has been lacking; a ruck with the engine and vigour to work consistently hard at the proverbial coal face; she links up with team mates and is very competitive in the ruck contests. She did very well on debut against an experienced, quality opponent in King.

Nina Morrison will get better as the season rolls on, a really encouraging return though - her anticipation was excellent, the touch will come.

Georgie Prespakis was every bit as good as advertised, she is tough and composed in tight and silky if given any space. Zali Friswell showed a bit in her first game too, elite runner with very good balance and foot skills. Inspired draft selection.

Phoebe McWilliams is one of my whipping gals but to her credit she worked her way into the match really well after a quiet first quarter. Gunjaca's debut was a tough one, couldn't get any clean ball and copped a few big hits.

The club really should be aiming to win all of our Kardinia Park games this year, I think it's doable regardless of opposition.

Just got home from a day out and checked the scores. Good to see we got within striking distance of them after being blown out of the water in the first quarter the last time we played them.

One good thing too - we won't be on the bottom of the ladder this week like we were pretty much all last season until the last round. :)

Might be a few sore girls in the Bulldogs side next week judging by this game. Unfortunately it looks like they've already lost Izzy Huntington to a long term injury. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

Disappointing to lose but given the score last year hard to be unhappy. Morrison and Prespakis alone made a huge difference. A few flashes from some of the other new recruits, Scheer came into game late (although amazed she got back on) and Friswell looked tidy. A lot to be excited by.

Obviously one of the concessions we were afforded after last season was the opportunity to pre-select a couple of "mature aged" recruits from the local region which we did we Fuller & Gunjaca. At the same time as announcing their signings we also announced our first Irish recruit in Kearns

It was really good to see all 3 play in our round 1 match yesterday, and to an extent it would have been disappointing if at least one of Fuller or Gunjaca didn't play, as you could then ask if we selected the right mature recruits if they weren't stepping virtually straight into the team

Was really happy with the first up game from Fuller, and for a 22yr old there was some good signs there to be working with going forward. I know she's originally from SA, so to kinda ward off interest from "going home", I'd be looking to put an extended contract (the max 2 years we're currently permitted) in front of her and see what growth there is in her, because she could become a 10yr ruck & help settle our midfield group going forward

Kearns is one I didn't quite know what to expect, I remember a few twitter/instagram videos & interviews with her or about the type of player she is, and when they said "she loves the tough stuff" and "loves contact", it's something I went ok, but how will that actually translate to an AFLW match - we saw yesterday that's exactly what she had to offer. She wasn't afraid to put her body on the line, charged at the football & at the opposition, and I thought she gave us a point of difference to what we've seen before from players. I know we've had players who like to tackle & don't mind the hard work, but she bought a physicality that we haven't necessarily seen from our team, and definitely not repeatedly seen. I can see why she was given her debut yesterday, and while there may be some polish missing, I enjoyed watching what she bought & she's someone we need to see more from

Gunjaca was the quietest of the 3 mature debutants, with 1 handball & 1 tackle not great reading but it's not always easy to debut as a key forward type player, and as attacking as we were in our play yesterday, I don't know if things totally suited her. I hope they don't just drop her after a week, and give her a second week when we're playing at home & against a team that's not at the same level as North and see how she goes. At the moment we also don't have Liv Barber in the side, so when Liv is available to return then that key forward spot likely comes down to those 2, but until then lets give her chance to see if she can adapt to the next level

Anyone know when Liv Barber will be back? Feels like she's been missing an age after making a splash early in the season last year.

Would make our forward set-up even more dangerous - though more games from McWilliams like yesterday helps fill the gap.

(Also, where's Georgia Clarke? Her game in the VFLW prelim was awesome.)

For all our difficulty troubling the scorers recently, our score yesterday doubled what the reigning AFLW premiers could muster today...

Maybe there was a reason Brisbane struggled to score today...
