I think he's said verbal agreement ever since, so perhaps the initial intel wasn't quite on the money.
Everyone makes mistakes. It's how we deal with them that's important here. Getting personal doesn't help at all.

Nothing personal
I suppose if you post with Intel you are opening yourself up to critique if it goes wrong.
Especially if you are claiming its basically 99.9% done
I know shit happens and I'll be over the moon if we get Clarko.

"Strong intel this morning via my daughter who works within an industry with a number of Melbourne based clubs as clients - Clarkson signed with North today. Rumoured to be announced next week possibly Tuesday but if true before the Sydney game. Now I’m not saying this is gospel but the time lines I heard for a possible announcement do match the dates I heard earlier this week. So let’s keep a lid on it and hope this is correct."
- July 28th

That was his first post that started us all getting so excited.
Pretty much gone with "verbal agreement" ever since though, which to my mind is a correction on his initial claim.

Where's the coach's association? They're not at all concerned about one of their own being the subject of this?

Where is Essend*n's own HR (people and culture) department? Surely they owe an obligation to their people?

I remember it well.

Fair enough
Not sure if that's true though or if it actually means anything.

Also this week was meant to be a week of announcements.
But now even Kia doesn't seem confident anything will happen this week now yet says there is no validity to Essendon being a threat for Clarkos signature.

July 28th his first post in Clarko thread he says he had Intel Clarko has signed with us.
That's quite a while ago though. He has been very consistent in the past week or two that it was verbal only with high confidence that he would sign.

Look I'm not completely sold that KIA34 has all the info that we all need to be so confident that we won't lose our minds every time a twitter post or some trigger happy "journalist" puts something to the contrary out there but I think he has been consistent and that does give me some peace of mind.

We're all jumping at shadows because we have been burned so many times but we just need to wait and watch.

This is true, although sometimes early cessation and payout clauses in employment contracts contain contributory conditions. Such clauses usually account for a smaller payout if you find another job, and sometimes they even account for if you have undertaken any action to jeopardise getting another job. This may very well capture agreeing early to start employment a day after the expiry period.

Complete speculation as none of us know what his contract contained, and unless you're drafting elite sports contracts, none of us really know what the industry standard is that informs the 'reasonable' discussion you rightly spoke about earlier. Just pointing out that it's not that cut and dry as the standard restraint of trade/non-compete approach from a legal perspective.
You summed it up better than I did. Theoretically, there could be clauses in his Hawthorn contract that will have consequences based on how/if he signs on with another club etc.

But as you point out, we have no evidence of any such clauses (or what the contract as a whole looks like for that matter) nor I doubt there is anyone in this thread who are well seasoned experts in AFL coaching contracts specifically to know what is typical.

One thing I'll also point out, looking at the nature of the AFL being such a tiny and specialised industry, and necessary player/staff movement between clubs - many of the typical restraint of trade/confidentiality clauses in employment contracts that most people might be familiar with through their own work - I have serious doubt would be considered reasonable and therefore legal in the AFL world. Admittedly though, I have no familiarity with sports/AFL contracts specifically.

Pretty much gone with "verbal agreement" ever since though, which to my mind is a correction on his initial claim.

Which has never been accurate.

Just a couple of points I've been thinking about:

1) If there is a choice between North and Essendon, it's a very easy choice to make (whichever way one wants to go) even as a neutral. We are the antipode of Essendon in almost every way you can think of. Someone as astute as Clarkson would know all those cultural differences pretty well. If he prefers to work in Tullamarine, it would be a conscious decision taking into account all the cultural differences and the nature of both places. We shouldn't even think of him as the one that got away, if he chooses them as he never was the right fit in the first place.

2) Robbo made a good point, in his emotional moment about the possibility of Clarko going to Essendon, which he obviously has a soft spot for. The point he made was around the possibility that Clarko has made a promise or a personal commitment to Sonja, in which case he will say NO to Essendon. It's actually a very good point. Sonja is not just a very astute woman but also a very warm and engaging person. If they had multiple long meetings going into great detail, it's very much possible that they already formed some sort of bond, which he will find hard to walk away from. Just a gut feel, but I think this could well be the point that seals the deal for us, not so much vs Essendon, but any other club that might be in the frame like GWS. I think she personally will get him over the line using her negotiation skills. As someone who has met her personally, I think it's easy to come to this conclusion.

It's all pretty much 3rd hand information across the board, so I just take it all with a grain of salt really.

Just quietly this wasn't a joke. If you have poor impulse control and would like to be banned from this specific thread for a period of your choosing, please let your friendly moderating team know

Sweet, can I give you a list of names to ban? :stern look

That club has no shame.

They’re a flat out disgrace.

My own view is the Get Clarko stuff is more about internal Bomber politics than any genuine belief they can get him.

Barham wants to be able to say - we missed Clarko because we're a rabble who run shithouse processes, but let me tidy the joint up and we'll be well placed to get the next one.

Meanwhile Sheeds (yes, he's there on the board still lolol) is planning to get McVeigh, Solomon and HIRDY in to replace Ruttens, all under his tutelage obviously.

Barham knows that is an absolute disaster (for them ... megalolz for the rest of us) and trying to head that off is his main game.

If he can get a sit down with Clarko who says yeah I woulda done it but you're a rabble off field, gives him the ammo he needs.

BUT - Clarko hasn't signed with us, he hasn't given us an verbal agreement, and stranger things have happened in footy.

I'm still 85 per cent he comes to us, 10 he goes GWS and 5 he goes to the Bombers though.

Haven't you heard of the old "having internet issues, will need to turn off my camera" trick?
Indeed. Fair to say they are pretty strict about cameras being on. They like to look at you whilst they're tearing you a new one.

"Nick, why did you ignore Ben on the bench as seen on Footy Classified"

Does their club even have a media manager

Oh for the halcyon days of Justin Rodski!

Clarkson had plenty to say about integrity, honour, greed and culture.
So this right here is his chance to be the man he was actually talking about.
Regardless of all the speculation the scums behaviour towards their coach is reprehensible at best, they have been a club even in recent history with the lowest moral fibre.
Like I say this is Clarkson’s moment, under the circumstances if he does choose them at this point it seems they’d be a perfect match and if he doesn’t then we really have got something special coming our way.
🤞
This part of what he had to say.

“It’s the club, it’s the culture, the vision of the board and whether that aligns with your vision and your set of values. There’s a lot of feeling out that needs to occur in terms of whether there is alignment. And we’re talking about me - that goes with every coach and club, in terms of an interview process,” he said on Fox Footy.
