It would be nice if they explained their numbers like murder per capita etc. Stats can be made to mean almost anything and it is misleading to compare an outback town with a small population to a major city. There are places in Sydney and Melbourne far more dangerous than Alice Springs due to under policing, same as there are places in some overseas cities that are dangerous much safer than parts of our cities.

We moved a few conference's away from Darwin and Alice Springs in the last few years and it wasn't out of fear,it was far too expensive and we didn't want our partners to have to see the drunken backpacker scum, retired alchos etc

Not disputing there's probably a problem up there, but from this link:
The Crime Index 2024 Mid-Year report, put together by crowd-sourced data website Numbeo, had a total of eight Australian cities on a list of 311, but the closest to Alice Springs was the Gold Coast, which came in a lot further down the list at 139.
Crowd sourced, my dude, without providing how the 'crowd' is involved. There's more than 315 cities in the world, and calling Alice Springs a city is pushing it.

It's not the most valid statistic.

I agree all that stuff, polls, rankings.. is pretty much worthless just posted it as a link was requested.

Whilst I don't think it's a grrat definition either a city in Australia is 25k+, see Kal being known as Kalgoorlie Boulder City.

Perfect job the retiring Linda Burney when she leaves politics next year.

She couldn't get the Yes vote up in her own electorate in the referendum, but I just bet she could sort this joint out quick smart.

I do wonder if there is more to this story and if it will come out.

When I read 'aboriginal death in custody' I immediately think suicide - but this article makes it seem like he never got to a police cell (maybe he did, it doesn't say either way), and that injuries from the arrest may have been a cause? (Either that, or he was in a state at the time already that led to being hospitalised - perhaps the arrest made it worse)

The facts around it seem sketchy at this stage, but NT police not wanting an independent investigation into the death is interesting. I would have thought any death in custody would automatically trigger some sort of independent review.

Is there CCTV footage from the supermarket?

It's so bloody sad. Imagine the outrage if one of those machete kids at Northlands was apprehended and died. All this kid allegedly did was try to shoplift.

He also punched a woman in the back of the head earlier in the day and was assaulting the security guard.

He didn't make it out of the shop, was pinned to the ground during the arrest so choked?

Of course nobody should ever die for that and I agree that there definitely needs to be an independent investigation.

An eyewitness told the ABC the restraint "looked pretty violent".

Another, who didn't want to be identified, said they saw a plain-clothed officer tackle the man and pin him to the ground with his knee on his neck.

"He was pinned down and he was told to stop resisting," the witness said.

And the guy was crying, he was crying loudly, saying 'mama, mama'.

The man was taken to Alice Springs Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Exchange Alice Springs for Minneapolis and that’s almost exactly as George Floyd died.

Thanks for the update, the ABC article didn't mention your first paragraph. Do you have a source for that?

Yeah the facts still have to come out, but surely investigation needs to be independent. I mean come on.

Floyd's arrest was filmed.

What's the deal with bodycams on cops in the NT?

The first article I posted, sorry I incorrectly said head though unless that was elsewhere.

He said the investigation had also found that the deceased man struck a woman in the back near a Commonwealth Bank branch in Alice Springs before he entered the supermarket. Police are seeking witnesses through Crime Stoppers for information on that incident.
I think abc articles have mentioned that earlier incident simply as an assault.
