So you've got a player who is uncontracted and in the standard trade situation. He has requested to come to North, and you would't even bother to offer anything for him? West Coast are one of the more reasonable clubs at the trade table, i doubt we would be pushing for more than fair value.

I'd value him as being worth more than Polec. If by high you mean picks 15ish and pick 35ish, then I suppose that's a reasonable starting point.
That's the problem, the issue isn't with being fair traders, the issue is that the fair trade value would cost North too much due to the constraints of needing current picks/points for TT and Scott; Crocker won't cost North much, as well as possible future picks for Kelly. The situation that I would envisage that North would trade for Gaff is if Polec rejects North's deal.

I didn't mean 15 or 35 as high, they are mid to late picks, but obviously there are constraints with where North's picks are as well as picks being pushed back thanks to priority picks and academy/father-son bidding.

As for value, a bit depends if Lycett goes and if you then want Pruess. Then the value would be say: Pick 15, Pick 35 and Pruess for Gaff and a third rounder.

I reckon considering the circumstances, that trade is very fair for Gaff.

Anyway I doubt we would match with your salary cap, just interested in views if it actually occurred.

Gaff is worth quite a bit and he's well rated.

It's possible, but it is more in the unlikely phase atm. The Polec trade would be the first domino I suspect.

if in contract he would be a 2 1st draft pick player.
bit less if he was just out of contract no fa.
As a free agent it seems he has 2 possible values.
1 would be pick 17-20 as a compo pick. this option requires the contract offer from north to blow west coast out of the water.
2 west coast match. Gaff gets to choose which offer he takes. if it is still the north offer. a trade of norths first rounder + preuss would be about right imo. He still would not be valued the full contracted rate imo. bit less.
thats my best guess.
please dont get angry peeps its totally a guess.

If North and West Coast are going to come to an agreement then surely it involves the Eagles not matching and then working out something on the DL to include the compo pick?

Maybe, but we didn’t do Carlton or WB any favours in regards to free agents. It’s the nature of FA.

We did send Luke Delaney to St Kilda for a pick we weren't going to use though the year we brought in Dal Santo.

Yea, but he wasn't exactly worth much to start with. A paltry gift really.

Still a player they wanted and we would have kept, end of the day.

Where does everyone see Gaff going?

The whispers are the AFL are keen on the Blues trading that mid 1st priority pick for Gaff.

They want Blues to improve and the mid first plus something else is less embarrassing than the ridiculous compo pick touted.

But not sure if Gaff is keen on the Blues.

We as Eagles supporters can but hope.

Imagine the AFL wanting you to be a pawn in their “equalisation”

If it was about winning a flag wouldnt he just stay at West Coast?

I don't think it has to be a singular reason. He may want to come back to Melbourne, play for a club outside the spotlight and also have a chance at success, in which case North isn't a bad option as we would tick all boxes.

The salary offered is likely as much about preventing West Coast matching as it is about luring Gaff, given we have the space to comfortably do it.

This is the first time I have seen "play for a club outside the spotlight" used as a strength of Norths. Good for you...

It was floated as a potential reason - Gaff is a fairly private person from all accounts and has spent his whole career in the Perth AFL bubble, so it would make sense to not want to go to an Essendon/Hawthorn/Richmond/Collingwood. Might be complete bogus as well but not everyone wants to play for the biggest clubs.
