Not sure what you are struggling with mate, it's not too difficult to follow

Do you mean you hypothetically include it in the overall net gain of each club - ie us trading you Preuss for 69 is in effect us trading you 19/Preuss for 69/Gaff?

Great trade.

For North.

For one player that's a free agent and another that's out of contract.

If the alternative in that hypothetical is we get Gaff for free and hold fat on not trading our first for Polec that scenario mooted gets Port a first rounder and WC a pick better than compo. If anything I'd say Port wouldn't have to add a pick and our future second instead of third should go to WC.

Yeah I switched it to your first, so in effect you'd keep the compo and get our first and a third, but lose your first and second. Probably not that realistic though!

More realistic is probably you not matching and us sending you Preuss for a future third or something, assuming Lycett goes.
We don't have a first-rounder.

What trade will satisfy us and how would any compo pick for Gaff affect it?

Any deal should be more beneficial for both clubs if you can include an extra pick from AFL house into the mix.

Say hypothetically if North were willing to trade pick 10 for Gaff. Come to an agreement behind closed doors where we dont match and get pick 19 and then we could send pick 19 their way with Gaff for pick 10 and a second rounder. That way they upgrade a second rounder to pick 19 and we get an extra second rounder on top of pick 10. Or something like that anyway. Adding in the compo though can be beneficial for both clubs in a trade.

Obviously the more likely scenario here is that North won't trade for Gaff so teams could come to an agreement that we wont match and North agree to send us someone like Preuss for example on the cheap.

End of the day none of these things will happen though. We can't match and Gaff will just walk for nothing and we will take the compo

Or West Coast indicate they'll match ala Adelaide and Danger and then the alternative is West Coast get 10 + change for Gaff. :)

BRILLIANT! There's no way the AFL would see through that!

Yes, but that's not part of the hypothetical of West Coast and North working out a deal to avoid them matching, is it?

No I'm just suggesting that there is little incentive for West Coast to consider that scenario.

I wasn't participating in it. I was mocking it.

If you were really my friend you'd have worked that out.

If you were really my friend you wouldn't try to torment me.

We're not friends now for two days.

The problem with your scenario is once you take the priority pick for Gaff, you no longer have Gaff to trade! So essentially, we would be trading our 1st and 2nd round pick for your compo pick which is never going to get signed off.

Your "more likely scenario" is possible

I don’t know why Carlton would even want to waste a draft pick and or player for Mitch McGovern when Gaff is essentially a free agent that would only cost the Blues cap space.

Carlton have a ton of cap space available and a player like Gaff should be the Blues number one priority. He’s exactly what they need. Cripps and Gaff would make a great midfield duo.
Blues might want to use your priority picks for Gaff...can come straight in and improve the team next year.;)
