Going into a fresh season with:

Going to be shit.

Yeah you were, just be honest...

Plus the game vs GC was much MUCH "worser", at least injuries to Ballas, Fyfe and Johnson played some part vs Carlton, there was nothing vs GC...
Umm not what your problem is..

I was at the Gold Coast game live but only had a shit seat behind the goals so didn't get a real great look at the game to compare it, never watched a replay.

Tanking is what Melbourne did, play backs forward and forwards back, ruck a 185cm guy, have your ruckman play FB, stop rotating players until those on the field can't run.

So, Freo are not tanking but they gave away this year three weeks ago, it's all about getting games into kids, getting key injured players ready for 2017, getting high draft picks, getting a soft draw for 2017.

Finish bottom six and you get double up games against GC, Bris, Carl etc and only one game against top 6 sides except WCE.

Smart thinking by the club, better to do this than what Wretchmond are doing, they will now win enough to finish say 9th, get a tougher draw and first pick around 12 after the certain guns have been taken. The heirachy there will be patting themselves on the back they extended Hardwick to 2018.

So what Freo is doing is very smart, ensure a bounce back in 2017.
If freo were truly tanking against essendon these 3 things would happen...

-Zac dawson is in the goal square in freos forward line

-our ruckman in clarke ir griffin or Hannanth are in the back pocket.

- Hayden Ballantyne is our ruckman in the centre square.

If all those three options do happen. yes then freo are tanking

I have no problem with the Dockers "tanking" this year.

This is not a club that has been perennially tanking, nor has it been trying to stockpile high draft picks over a number of years. (Compare that to the other clubs that had the torch on them)
This is a team that has been amongst the best over the last few years, and has been unfortunate to not get over the line.

Right now they have had quite a few injuries to key players, have some other players who are starting to show their age (on top of a loss to a key leader) and the whole team is out of form, and at 0-9, it would take a miracle to get out of this one.

I wouldn't have a problem with them using this year to get more games into kids, expediate the transition of the list, give injured players as much time as needed to get healthy with no pressure to return, and just use it as an extended pre-season for 2017. And a cherry on top will be a high draft pick)

(I have a slightly biased view, given that this is very similar to what happened to the Spurs in '96. When we had been a very-good team all through the early-mid 90's, always amongst the best, but never good enough to even get to the Finals, even in the Jordan retirement years. Suddenly we had a year where our MVP was out, and ended up missing 90% of games, 3 of our starting 5 and another key player all missed between half-to-all of the season, and were going through a key coaching transition... I have no hesitation in saying the Spurs then tanked that year, and then lucked out in the draft, but they have followed it with 19-straight playoff seasons, and 5 championships, and that was the only season in the last 30-odd that they have missed the playoffs).
San Antonio Spurs history is an interesting one. He'll I remembered when Dennis Rodman played for them lol. As for the five titles of 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014. I will mention 3 blokes: Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli. All three guys play important roles in that 2002-2014 period. Plus they managed to replace their role players at the right time to win championships too.

As for my mob. There is a young core there to build around

Ross must have been nervous when they were up against the saints at 3 qtr time.

Still, full credit to him for pretending to give them a spray. His acting skills are second to none.
Thanks mate. I'm actually waiting for the season to end already. We're getting McCarthy or at the very worst use our top pick on a gun key forward. Last time dockers used a top 5 pick on a key forward was pick 4 in 1999. That bloke was Matthew Pavlich

Ross is a smart man and will do everything it takes to give Freo a good chance to rebuild.

Why would you try to win more games if all it would do is worsen your draft pick? I'm not blaming Ross for tanking, I'm blaming the system.

Ross has already proven he is capable of manipulating a result to his advantage. Last year for example, he threw the derby because he wanted West Coast to finish 2nd so that it ensured Freo would play Hawthorn at home in the prelim, rather than at the MCG on grand final day. Now obviously that didn't work out in the end, but it showed Ross' intelligence as a coach.

there's a bit if a pride thing first me. I said this many times. I rather finish 3rd it 4th bottom and get pick 3-4 than get the spoon and pick 1.

I dont want the media pressure on us. If we get a dude at pick 1 it would be so much worse.

It will be hard to win missing the best ruck, best mid, best tall defender, best young tall defender, most talented midfielder and best line breaking mid.

It was hard to win with only two drafted top five picks on our senior list before this year, it will be good to inject some classy talent into the squad.

Probably the recession freo had to have after such a good run.

Add mcarthy and hogan to the forward line, talent returning to the park from injury and uncover a gem or two in the squad and it's game on again.

That's how to stop the boats.
