Was having a look at our table and draw for the Asian Cup qualifiers.

Next match is Wednesday August 16 at Aussie Stadium, Sydney against Kuwait and should be huge.

These were exactly the meaningful types of matches we never had while in Oceania. One after will be two weeks later at Adelaide Oval against Lebanon.

Top two make it through and should we beat Kuwait we would be virtually there.

Well of course they would.

It's a confederation cup, why wouldn't they play in it? That'd be like none of the top line European or South Americans playing in the European Cup or the Copa America.

All but one or two (eg: Kewell) will play in the remaining qualifiers because they're on FIFA approved dates, unlike the Bahrain game where the match was played on a non-FIFA date.

nice

i doubt they will be biased to the city the game is played in. The likes of skoko, elrich, etc, kilkenny, patafta and a few of the young guns like troisi, jamieson, williams i think would all be their, our B team is starting to look very good.

When does the Foxtel deal kick in?

Saudi Arabia were a disgrace this morning. Asia might end up losing a WC spot. Iran have been average also and Japan are likely to finish bottom of our group. Hopefully the financial influences and the China factor hold sway.

the a-league

The Daily Telegraph understands that FoxSports has beaten all other commercial networks in a bidding war that secures almost all international games and the local A-league competition to the television network.

The megadeal amounts to an increase in the sport's annual TV income of more than 20 times on this season's contract, for which Fox paid just $750,000 to show the A-League alone.

The new deal will include all Socceroos and club games here, bar the next two World Cups.

Has the situation changed since?

the best thing about beating japan was now we are going to be a seeded team when the asian qualifying begins which means we will not be in the same group as japan, korea, iran etc

if we dont have a direct ticket now to every world cup then ronaldos skinny

And what is even better than that is that every stage is round robin as opposed to knockout so we can afford to lose one of two games along the way.

Korea and Iran both qualified after finishing second in their groups - Korea with 10 and Iran 13 points out of a possible 18. The teams which finished third were Uzbekistan and Bahrain with 5 and 4 points respectively.

Japan who we smashed actually topped their group with 15 points.
Saudi Arabia topped the other group with 14.

All in all - think we are going to be ok.

If Saudi Arabia is the third-best team in Asia at the moment, then going on the parts I saw of their matches, Australia has just become a permanent World Cup participant.
I love the confidence, but take out the Hiddink, Neeskins and Arnold team and half the squad retiring....who knows what we'll look like in a few years.
But still, we should be winning these comps from now on.

Yep - our WC qualifying path is definitely so much better now. And like you say even if we have a shocker one day and drop a match or two, being round robin instead of knockout we can still be ok.

I'm still glad that we qualified through the minefield of Sth American playoffs and now have passed the group stage so that nobody can say that we made the move because we couldn't do it any other way.
