The Geelong background on Greaves strikes me of Neeld building a team based on reputations that he knows a lot about and on teams that he may have seen.

I'd suggest that Neeld is going to probably sign at least one Geelong-area assistant based on his experience more rather than go openly hunting.

Royal is respected as a good operator and I'm sure he's contracted anyway. Moving him to the midfield I think is a good idea. He knows the players already and get a head start on learning Neeld's game plan. I think Neeld will also have a big role in the midfield next year. This Greaves guy sounds like a mini Neeld - similar background in teaching, local team in the Geelong area and TAC cup. As an assistant to an assistant I think he'll be doing a lot of development work and will be probably be involved with the young mids.

Backline and forward line still to come

NEIL Craig's list of suitors is getting longer.
Carlton - having decided to keep coach Brett Ratten - is preparing to outbid every AFL rival on signing Craig as a "senior assistant" or "coaching director".

The Blues are ready to beat Brisbane and Victorian rivals Melbourne and Richmond to hire Craig, whose future has been subject to much conjecture in the past month.

First chased by the Lions, Craig then was said to be on the verge of signing a three-year deal to support Richmond coach Damien Hardwick.

Then at the weekend he emerged as Melbourne's choice to support the Demons' novice coach Mark Neeld.

Craig refuses to make any public comment on his future until he chooses a club.

Don't like our chances of winning Craig over Carlton...

Just goes to show how little the media knows.
"He'll have a presser tomorrow to announce he'll be at the Lions."
"Dramatic scenes as he meets to outline the final details with the Tigers."
"He will be unveiled as Melbourne Director of coaching as early as next week."
"Carlton will today unveil the final details of the presser tomorrow to announce they will unveil him at a conference as early as next week."

Greaves is a terrific get. Fantastic bloke and a very good coach as well, will slot in nicely at the club in an "assistant to an assistant's" role.

To me it smells a little like Neeld lining him up for the job full time in 12 months, but he's got to use Royal somewhere because it seems the club have said they want to honour (or not payout) his contract & Greaves maybe isn't quite to the point just yet Neeld could convince the club he could take a important assistants position coming from where he is.

Well if Craig does go to Carlton I hope they end up paying overs for him. You wouldn't know they had nearly $8mill of interest bearing liabilities on their books with the way they're going about this.

It is hard to tell if they are willing to simply outbid the current bids from other clubs or go beyond that if any of those clubs review and up their initial bids. Highly reckless IMO if they're just going to pay over what any other club will pay.

Also a clear signal that they are not entirely confident in Ratten. Is there any other senior coach who's been in the business for this long (5 yrs) who has a prominent DOC to hold their hand?

That was my understanding of that little arrangement too.

Anyway, here's to getting a quality backline coach! :thumbsu:

An established senior assistant,

Burns, Sumich, Hudghton, Watters ect

The first two could easily look at other possibilities to broaden their horizons, Both Neeld and was it McCartney being credited with such a broad coaching background and experience, i dont know if coaching at one club is enough these days

Burns has re-signed with WC & stated he won't be moving back east after missing the Crows job.

Sumich & Watters are said to be high in the running for Saints job, but if they miss that I'd imagine they'd stay with their current clubs & look for another senior job next year, rather than potentially join a new club for only 12 months.

Watters I wouldn't want, not that I doubt his ability (quite the opposite) but we need more than just Collingwood influences & it would be weird with Neeld new to the job & his previously equal colleague now reporting to him, I know they're professionals but not something I think a first year senior coach at a brand new club needs to try deal with.

Hudghton seems like a great option for the backline coach, 2 years with the saints he might be looking for a new challenge. Saints had 4th least points scored against but finished 6th, I know that's not the be all & end all and saints contested game style limits opposition scoring, but I'd be happy with his appointment.

Why pot Daniher, you now nothing, West Coast are going ok.

Sorry- where did I pot Daniher? Said he was a great bloke and I love him, but don't want any semblance of a culture of mediocrity moving forward. Did Daniher bring a strong culture of success to the Dees? We've been there and we've moved on- he won't be coming here.

you talk about mediocrity yet you were a Bailey lover, go figure.

I'm sorry? How was I a Bailey lover? Because I didn't demand his sacking in 09 when a Jock McHale/Norm Smith combo couldn't have coached us to anymore success?

I guess when you're constantly negative about someone like yourself you're bound to be right at some stage- I mean a broken clock is right twice a day right?

JTR your trolling really needs work...

Not that I want to provide any support for JTR's new found love of trolling, but I wouldn't be totally against Daniher coming back in a role other than as senior coach, surely you can attribute some of West Coasts rebuild & rise back to the top 4 to him.

Look how respected Balme is firstly at Collingwood when they reached 2 GFs & then joining Geelong just before they really took off, after a mediocre snr career at Melbourne. Just because someone isn't a mega successful senior coach doesn't mean they can't be very good at another footy job, i.e. the reason we want Craig...
