..also, Ottens would be good, but so would Charmo I would've thought

Charmo is a great guy but hasn't played a game of senior footy in several years and the role of the AFL ruck has evolved somewhat in that time.

Ottens has been at the top of his game in a great premeirship side. Would have a massive amount to offer not only as a ruck coach but as a development coach as well. Getting access to some of that Geelong IP would be very nice.

Charmo would be a natural choice if our options were limited though.

Don't disagree with you at all...all relevant points and I would be quite happy to have him coach our boys..

...was just surprised you hadn't mentioned Charmo, is all...cheers:)

Don't know if this counts for anything or whether there's any truth to it, but Ottens had a reputation for extreme laziness whilst still at Richmond. It was rumoured then that he barely left his couch most days, and was obsessed with Playstation. Still, even if true, one would think he would he'd straightened himself right up once he got to Geelong. Just wondering what kind of cat he'd be as a coach. Tiger or cat?

Cat!...perhaps one that grows into a big Lion??..

Reading the tweet tributes from team-mates, I'd say he had mended his ways...

One that I thought spoke volumes, was from Tom Harley, his ex captain...said that the Cats would now never be the same team, or as good without him..ended with top player, even better bloke..

Gees I hope we don't end up with Harvey. The bloke is a moron and we would be better off looking at the power behind the throne whilst he was at Freo eg like the now coach of Geelong.

I've no idea what he's like tactically, or as a development coach, but geeze he doesn't exactly fill one with confidence anytime he gets in front of a camera.

Its a NO from me..I'm very fussy with who I want involved with our club...we are a very exclusive club if you don't mind!...we don't just take anybody you know!;):p

I'm reminded of a post by POBT a few months ago where he said people are often promoted to a point just outside their capabilities. I reckon this is the case with Harvey. He won't be a senior coach with us, so we shouldn't judge him as one.

He was very well regarded as an assistant coach at Essendon, and was part of the coaching panel of that great side around 1999-2001.

And... was he really all that bad at Freo to be honest? Inherited a flawed, aging list with a poor culture and made all the unpopular and hard (but correct) list management decisions. Went with a youth policy and it was really starting to show dividends only to be cruelly axed on the back of one injury decimated season.

He is a passionate football person and while he is rubbish at the media stuff (much like one M. Voss), I reckon he probably communicates well to the players themselves.

I reckon he has quite a bit to offer in an assistant's role.

Agreed. The major reason behind his sacking was that the Fremantle hierarchy thought they could get a better coach, in the highly rated Lyon. They decided that while Harvey is a good coach, Lyon was better and thus head hunted him.

I think Harvey would have a lot to offer. Remember Fremantle made the finals under him in 2010, with a young, developing list.

And Chris Scott as his lead assistant. An assistant who was very highly thought of throughout the AFL and went straight into the Geelong role and resurrected them after they were written off with teh departure of GAJ and Bomber.

I think that is a contradiction. Despite the general acknowledgement that experience is very important, youth policies are extremely popular.

Moving on experienced vets who have a popular fan following and would still be at or close to the 22 is often not popular. See one Luke Power decision recently. The right thing to do but not popular with the general punter.

IIRC did Harvey not make the Voss error of loading up older players - mainly from the Bombers- first up, & only go the youth route when he was proven unsucessful?

Personally, would not throw too much moolah at him - IMO there are recently retired [players with as much to offer, and would commit for multi years, which I can't see Harvey doing.

Apparently Mcleod wants to coach the NT Thunder. Maybe the Lions could talk to him about an assistant position. He's a top bloke, not sure about his coaching ability.

What about Wayne Carey as an assistant? He lives in QLD, doesn't he?
