I find it funny that with all the ordinary footy we're playing... We are only 1 game behind Hawthorn at the moment....

It is funny and a great sign but Hawks lost those games in close ones(so have we I guess in a couple) but they've had a much harder draw than us too.

We're still well and truly in a hunt for a finals spot but I don't think Beveridge is picking a team to win each week. Oh wait, that sounded bad. I mean if it was round 23 and were still in the hunt I bet Stevens would have played and Prudden and possibly Dale would have been left out. Boyd rucking the last quarter for example probably wouldn't have happened but I think that was a really good learning curve for him and the coaches.

Very irritated to lose today.

Just couldn't kick the damn goal in the second half to put us within a goal of them.

I don't have too many complaints with anyone's performance - Stringer had a shocker and Crameri needs to work harder, but that's about it.

Redpath- geez. I like him, but missing that set shot on half time, and then taking forever in the last when we need two goals before doing a risky pass to Grant that leads to a turnover. I'm actually more irritated at the latter than the former - he's young and players can miss set shots, but that pass to Grant in the last quarter after taking forever, nearly tore my hair out.

Thought Dahlhaus and Wallis were outstanding, Bonti terrific second half, and Caleb Daniel continues to impress - love him already.

Silly errors and poor finishing cost us again, and it was also really ****ing irritating that they got that goal on the siren in the 3rd.

It's not a catastrophic loss but you get Geelong at home as beatable as they were today and it's hard not to be pissed off.

In all seriousness, the reaction of some people here has been ridiculous.
You can be annoyed and gripe all you want, but the fact remains that we are still a young developing side that will find it very hard to win 5 in a row in a competition as close as this one. Particularly up against a Geelong side that still has a lot of very good experienced footballers.
Fair point. Are people really that angry that a team with our experience profile had a problem with winning five in a row?
Geez expectations sure have changed, many didn't think we'd win 5 at the start of the year.

Ugly game of footy today, Geelong were good at holding the ball in when they had no option and releasing it when they did. I can only remember 1 holding the ball against Mackie. And 1 throwing the ball. Stringer got pinged for rough tackle, the player had no intention of releasing the ball WTF.... and a throw (fair enough)

No Prior opportunity is a joke, Geelong hatched the ball all day to their benefit, Dogs ran and tried to to keep the ball moving, albeit made errors. Personally would much rather watch a team continually move the ball, rather than play hatch an egg.

This game of Footy is turning to Crap, If unpires paid more holding the balls the game would move quicker, more scores and less stoppages.

FWIW In my opinion prior opportunity is gone when you decide to take possession of the ball, because you always have the option to knock/punch it on.

This one interpretation would restore my enjoyment of the game...........
Nice post, absolutely agree the game is getting destroyed by crap umpiring interpretations. all this BS talk about introducing zones and interchange caps. The solution is simple, stop players picking up and holding onto the ball. Boring as all crap watching monsters like Fyfe and Josh Kennedy play rugby and never get penalised.

Today they screwed us big time, even with the chief head ducker rubbed out, the cats got all the tiggy- touchs.

Busy first quarter. Very quiet in the second but came back into it in the second half.

He is listed as only (!) 78.9% DE for his 9 kicks and 10 HBs but it just seemed every time he had the ball he thought his way through it - what was the best thing to do with it? Most of the time it was not just an effective disposal but one that put the recipient into a position where he had an even better chance at an effective disposal, i.e. to launch an attack. He is listed as having 5 CPs and 13 UPs (that's only 18 - not sure where his 19th "P" came from!) but he was regularly working in the guts, so even with a UP he was usually delivering it under pressure.

For a comparison, the sort of thought/execution that goes into his disposal is characteristic of Stevey J when he has space. If he can regularly deliver like that he'll be great value for us. His 19 disposals were worth maybe 25 from most other players.

On the negative side he missed a few tackles according to the Game Day thread (I missed seeing that but I'll believe it).

He also failed to record any HOs.

But to finish on a positive: on a day when we only kicked 9 goals he is credited with 2 GAs. (5 others in the side had 1 GA, no-one else had 2).

All in all, a pretty handy outing for a 19yo third gamer. (Copying in footy4ever who was interested in CD's progress)

Great summary. Thanks. Wish more of our guys had that kind of decision making.

I think there is a different "biggest reason we lost" but looks like there is little support as it has not been mentioned in this thread yet.

I am all for trusting the coach and he has done a great job so far but ...... Some one should make him watch the last three premierships the Cats won. The ones , all three of them, where the Cats employed Cameron Ling as a specialist tagger. for mine if we had have curbed Caddy in that game we would have won.
Agree to disagree.. We tag Caddy, we'd still have the same issues when going forward.

It's happened the last 4 weeks now. Need to fix it.

Agree. All this talk of zones is bollocks. The solution already exists. Umpire to the rules, enforce holding the ball and incorrect disposal. Problem solved. If there was one rule I'd consider it's penalising 3rd man in (as opposed to up) at the tackle as their intent is almost invariably to lock the ball in and create a stoppage.
Already on the record as wanting to abolish the sub and reduce interchange (prob to 60).

Geez expectations sure have changed, many didn't think we'd win 5 at the start of the year.

Expectations have been raised and that's a good thing.

We can serve up much better and we've shown it regularly this year and that's why it's disappointing.

I am! I think I said in the red faces thread we would win five games in a row at some stage this year! So close :p

Didn't see the game but first page of this thread is a bit of a disgrace
Match-day threads and the early pages of the autopsy threads are best avoided...

Some real vitriol towards undeserving targets. We've all been guilty of it, but some of it was absolutely out of line.

We had our best player out too, plus a few others ... Roberts, Hamling, (by Dog, we missed them today!) Stevens, McLean, Minson, Smith. That's 7 players right there who would probably get picked if fit. (Assuming Minson was a genuine injury).
Not saying we accept mediocrity or take comfort in an "honourable loss". We had chances to win and blew them. However I can still take a little solace from this result, especially after coming back from Cairns and a string of wins against a side playing for its season. We'll be better for it next week.
There are definitely reasons why we lost but I think you'd agree those are the games we should be winning. I thought it wouldn't have mattered who we had in today because the disappointing thing for me was the lack of chase, work rate and aggression we seemed to just cost even late in the game where Bont didn't fully commit, doesn't matter who you have on the ground or how young you are effort, pressure and aggression are musts. If it was skill and decisions that cost us I'd accept that with a young team but today was too many passengers

Agree with most of that but intensity isn't ever a constant. Even experienced sides struggle to maintain intensity week after week. Much harder with a young side. Seems a bit harsh to call them all "passengers" but I agree we are well off our early season ferocity and confidence. Our season hinges on whether we can get that back.

Despite that, I do reckon if we'd been able to play Stevens and one or both of Roberts and Hamling we'd have taken the points.

Realistically we've limped over the line against some ordinary teams over the past month and were narrowly beaten by a team who should probably be narrowly better than us at the moment.

I'm from Geelong, grew up there. I hate the cats so much and went with my old man(dogs) and 4 Geelong mates who were all Cats. Driving back to melb was painful(this is my blood feud match) but honestly - it's a true reflection of where we are at. And we're ahead of where I expected us to be. We're still testing so many things out that it's a week to week thing. By this time next year I expect a lot of that to ironed out and the year after that it's on.
Nailed it Butane.

There was a fair bit of melting over a loss to a more experienced team on their home ground. We played just as badly last week, but the Suns collapsed. Geelong may be on the slide, but they are far from incompetent. With all the passengers and silly mistakes, we only lost by 8 points. Not the end of the world

Happy with today. Cats are hard to beat at home and we are a bunch of kids.

Dal is awesome. We just need a little bit more hardness and leadership when the chips are down. Oh to have Libba playing!!!!

Our forward line are pretty much all babies.

Loving this year and seeing the boys grow before our eyes. Win next week and all is forgiven.

You don't think those expectations have become too unrealistic?

I don't think so. Think back to 2008 or even way back to 1997, nobody really gave us a chance in either season, but we defied expectations. Yes, we're young, but like the coach said, there's no ceiling, so why not aim high?

hold your horses guys..roughy aint a backman but a decent ruck and will get better. we didint take our chances when we went forward with geelong seasoned defence setting up well.. they took .. kids will have ups and down.endeavor is there .disappointed but not worried.

Lots of 'Bulldog' excuses creeping into this thread, along with those that aren't happy with the loss. I doubt very much Bev would be making, or happy to entertain anyone conveying excuses.
