After two weeks here's how it looks to me.
Finals contenders (in no particular order)
St Bernards (Players are good blokes but have shocking supporters, they will be hard to beat)
Old Melb (Haven't seen them this year but heard that they go pretty good, generally fall apart once it snows though)
Old Haileybury (Plenty of experience, very dangerous at our best but I agree with you all, we are old)
St Kevins (Good playing list but appear to lack quality talls)
Old Trinity (If Cults and Rambo are fit they are extremely dangerous but lack depth)

Safe
Old Carey (Rowe and Kent are very good players but do lack decent talls)
Ormond (McConville in the ruck, isn't he older than all of us?)
Uni Blacks (Never seen them but results indicate they will be ok)

Relegation
Old Camberwell (need to play some juniors)
Hampton Rovers (C Section club, out of their depth)

No offence intended :) just my opinion.

2 from 5 in my tips, shocking start to the year

huge win for skobs at the uni oval on a cold wet day, dowd BOG again
OM's get it done against the 08 a graders, are we starting to belive the hype?
OH go 1-1 witha good win over OC with the ex saints starring.
StB's beat hampton reasnably convincingly if not for some poor kicking and decent flooding from Hampton (37 scoring shots to 20)

and probably the upset of the round with Ormond edging out Carey at the MCG number 2 with 2 late goals to seal the win. The CHF martinov instrumental and will give CHB's headaches all year

5 out of 5 tips for me!

I'd hardly say it was an upset. Obviously no one rates us which suits us fine. We will surprise a lot this year. We knew we could win against Carey & they are hardly a big gun of B grade themselves, so we aren't getting carried away at all. Good to chalk up the 1st win all the same.

always good to go under the radar gunn,

but if my mail is correct, OC had 6 decent injuries from the opener against skobs (and i know that every team has/gets injuries).... but from all reports they are topliners, ....so expect a different OC in the back half of the season.
Well done to ormond to win at the wide expanses of OC, i still think the smaller grounds will suit and they could cause some big upsets.

mostly true about bernards vs hampton, tho not sure what flooding u are talking about. They had 2 behind the ball in both quarters going into the wind and we had none. a 6 goal run in the final qtr nearly saw an upset, if the rain had stayed away the story may have been different.

none the less bernards did well to turn the last 10 minutes of the game around, they look an impressive unit.

if u watched the same game i did, you will find hampton had 1 behind the ball for most of the 1st quarter and 2 for most of the 3rd quarter. bernards didn't put anyone behind the ball until 10 minutes into the last when hampton started to get a run on. full credit to hampton for the fightback but just couldn't finish it off

Just a real general question here,
To my knowledge only 7 players for St bernards on the weekend were 23 plus and all the blokes in the best are under 23. How does that rate to other teams????? as it has been spoken about on this forum alot about having youthful teams and playing young kids and so on

average age on the weekend for bernards was just under 23 (yes, I did the math)
ormond the week before also looked reasnably youth heavy
i'd say SKOBS are probably looking at more 22-27 age bracket
Cant really comment on other teams, am imagining carey will be young this week with a lot of outs still
....

Cubzy / Murphys Law,

To be honest neither team played players behind the ball in the typical sense of being loose sweepers, St Bernards started their HFF players off the back flank, they ran forward through the midfield creating a 5/6 on 4 in the midfield and hitting targets over the Rovers Back flankers. Rovers showed spirit to come back to within 14 points with 10 minutes to go, however the better team on the day won - 37 scoring shots to 20, Rovers skills let them down and they must learn to play 4 qtrs to win games in B grade.

Good observation ML. Ormond's average age last Sat 22yrs 9mths, take out 38y/o Matt McConvill & it reduces to 22yrs 3mths.

All of this age talk really means SFA in the VAFA. Teams don't have contracts and the turnover is usually pretty high across the board each year, so building for long term success invariably is a waste of time. Case in point is Caulfield Grammarians.

To a certain poin you are right, however i think clubs are now realising that they have to really build their junior affiliate programs to get results...loyalty in some cases still exists.

Bernards for instance fielded a team on the weekend with 100% fully home grown players...Every player either went to the school or played all their juniors at the club (except B Jordan...who is a premiership captain anyway). I think this might be the way to go for some clubs, it mgiht be their only chance.

Skevs similar i assume in some ways?

Skevs are all home grown aswell except for about 2 players who came across with the old coach mick duggan from strathmore... certainly good ties with the school helps for the future of clubs... also saw that charlie gardiner didnt play this week for OM's.. is there anything in that?

think rovers had 14 (guessing 1 or 2 of the age's) players 23 or under on the weekend, will be similar for the rest of the year.
I wouldnt be suprised if that was generally similar for most teams in the higher grades? noticeably younger than a few of the teams in C section.

griff getting it done early on in 09....

R3 preview
Ormond v OM's (at Gunn Reserve)- clould be closer than some may anticipate. Expect Ormond to dish it up to the snow skiers at Gunn reserve. Im tipping it will be close, Ormond's CHF to dominate.

OCamb v Trinity (at G Barnard)- Dont know what is going on with OCamb at the moment. Injuries? Is the bottom ground fixed or are they playing on that top "ground"? Trinity to bounce back by 10 goals.

Carey v Bernards (at MCG2)- I think this will be another close one... carey still hampered with injuries to key players, bernards also with some key outs from R1. Both very young sides on a big open ground should make for a super game. Bernies by 3 goals.

OH v Blacks (at badlands)- Match of the round for mine and should be a belter. Is harves playing? Can anyone stop loewe (other than mother nature)? T Brown not in the best 2 weeks running? please explain OH people.... WIll tip OH by the barest of margins (1 point) in a thriller.

SKOBS v Hampton (at spaghetti)- Skobs to make it a perfect 3-0 start to the season comfortably with Simpson and Dowd unstoppable. SKOBS by 50 points.

Definitely an issue for a number of clubs. Have been wondering for some time the value of playing old players week after week at the expense of bringing some youth through. Maybe the short term pain is worth it in the middle/long term??. Saw Mifsud play for Beauy on the weekend, he dominated and is a class player but hard to see the long term benefit?? Same story with Parkdale and others. Suppose only time will tell which is the right way.
