That's a valid point, vg. I'm personally waiting til Rd.1. I hope he stays on, but am also wary of his currency elsewhere and can understand if he chooses to chase the almighty $.

BS - I stand by my comments earlier on Barney getting the job. I stated I hadn't spoken to the hierarchy and my previous conversations with some were that they would be seeking someone similar to Matty being young with fresh ideas. Barney's presentation to the selection panel was said to be first class and so the story goes he got the job. Having spoken with him a couple of times now, I'm looking forward to seeing him lead the group in the 2011 season and beyond.

Did any VAFA players get drafted by AFL clubs in last week's AFL National Draft?

Jase I'm not sure if this counts but Jarryd Lyons pick 61 to Adelaide played a handful of games for the all conquering De La Salle U19's this year in between Sandy Dragons commitments. Jarryd played all his junior footy at St Peters East Bentleigh and was in 12 at De La this year. We reckon Tyson Hunt from De La a certainty to get rookied. Also on the subject of the rookie draft if Dan Nicholson from Uni Blues doesn't get selected then there is something horribly wrong with the system.

anyone else notice when scholarships are handed out to budding Footballers that have learnt their trade primarily through their Junior Football Club, that if they get drafted they state their School as their parent club, not the poor old club that have provided facilities, coaches, equipment all through their development.

"If ya didn't teach it, ya sure as hell don't own it!"

Which makes you wonder why the VAFA would bother with an Under 18 comp, when the majority of the players drafted into the AFL comes from the TAC Cup system. When an AFL club rep reads out a draftee player's name on Draft Day, he only mentions his TAC Cup side (ie Calder Cannons), not the club that has them through their development (ie Old Carey).

Jase I think the U18 comp is more about opportunity and participation than having kids drafted. Cardio - the aforementioned Jarryd Lyons has had a lot of media attention since being drafted. While obviously grateful for the opportunities afforded by his TAC club he has been at pains to point out that his junior club was St Peters JFC where he played since he was 7. Jarryd was not on a scholarship at De La (they don’t do them at ACC schools) but I believe the other local boy Ben Jacobs from Brighton Grammar might have been.

The VAFA U18 competition has nothing to do with getting kids drafted, that's what the TAC Cup is for.

The U18s came about due to quite a few U19 age players playing up to 3 seasons in U19s, and there was a push for a 'bridging year' between the usual junior club cut-off of U17 and the VAFA's fairly loose interpretation of U19 which allows kids to turn 20 in our competition in the second (calendar) half their last season.

So it was purely coincidental that it was hurriedly cobbled together shortly after the SFL introduced their Colts (U18s)?

Can't see what it has to do with the SFL, and given the uptake has been primarily northern/western clubs, I think your theory is lacking foundation. See the below list of clubs who fielded U18s.

Aquinas (not MSJFL aligned)
St Marys/Salesian (not MSJFL aligned)
St Johns (not MSJFL aligned)
Rupertswood (not MSJFL aligned)
Werribee (not MSJFL aligned)
Northern Bullants (not MSJFL aligned)
UHS/Flemington (not MSJFL aligned)
St Bernards (MSJFL aligned, but also an old boys school)
Therry Penola (not MSJFL aligned)
Oakleigh (MSJFL aligned)
Old Camberwell (not MSJFL aligned)
St Bedes/Mentone (MSJFL aligned, but also an old boys school)

Hardly an MSJFL/SFL theme is there?

My dear Scribe,

Nothing to do with them being "aligned" to the MSJFL. There was some concern the advent of the U18s had the potential to dilute our under U19 comp in the SFL catchment area. I know there was a huge push to get clubs in the catchment area involved and that persists. To date there are half a dozen. It's interesting that the VAFA has existed for yonks without an U18 comp, or much serious discussion to introduce one. Yet bingo, as soon as the SFL embarks on one we follow toot sweet.

Don't get me wrong, after a shaky beginning it's finding its feet and I'm all for the VAFA getting more directly involved in junior football. Or at least placing itself in a more advantageous position in that area - as my comments in another thread attest.

No doubt there were other considerations too, but I do know the hurried birth of our U18s had quite a bit to do with the SFLs move into that field. Unless a person in a position to know has lead me up the garden path - which, incidentally, isn't hard to do.;)

This year they read out both TAC & junior club team name.

St. Bernard's with possibly the countries best haul of draftees this year with 4 players coming through the junior ranks at the club to end up drafted.

Agree, although two of them are St Kevin's College boys VAFA06!
It's been a great couple of years for St Kevin's, with Wallis and Libba going as father/sons, big Tom Nicholls listed by Gold Coast at the end of last year and Jarryd Cachia being drafted by Carlton.
Lets hope Ben Casley and Dylan Conway get rookied.
