It sucks because the people that matter in my league (ie the 2nd and 3rd teams that are below me) both have Boyd, so although he looks very solid to me, im trying to find another unique mid.
In a league context, uniqueness can be a disadvantage. If you have a better or equal team compared to the 2nd and 3rd place, then by picking a slightly inferior option based on uniqueness you are going to be worse off.

Think about it this way - if you think about one of your league finals games vs these guys who have Boyd, say you have chosen to pick a different option to Boyd. Only one of you is going to be more likely to win the game as a result of the decision - and who will it be? Well if you believe Boyd is the better choice - it can only be your opponent will benefit from this difference.

The only reason this could benefit you is if you have an inferior team to your opponents. By picking a different player you might have a couple of points lower expected score than he will, but you give yourself a better chance of making up the ground because you have more different players.

A real tough one, been literally keeping me up at night lol.
My midfield is; Swan, Selwood, Bartel, Montagna, Goodes(DP) & of course Barlow.
I always go for highest ranking before leagues. My current ranking is 1600th so I'm not in contention, but I still want to finish as high as possible.
My options are; GAJ, Chappy, HAyes, Pendles, Boyd & NDS(money is not an issue)
GAJ-is known to end a season, not as well as he starts... In poor form by his standards, will get rested at some stage.
Chappy-if he would play every game for the rest of the year, I would get him in a heart beat... I very much doubt he will though.
Hayes- Will average around 110+, but I am sure he will also miss at some stage, when you factor in his age too.
Pendles- a good unique, but does he have the scoring potential of the others? He may but has always been a little up and down.
NDS- similar to Pendles but with a more likely scenario, due to past stats, that he will have a poor one or two also has potentialto sit out a match to.
Boyd- looked to me the most obvious, but he has poor records against his opponents... won't get rested which is a major factor which may just get him over the line. Plus last year he finished the year off with a BANG, can history repeat?

I'm in almost an identical situation here Buddyman. I have the same midfield although with Pendlebury instead of Goodes (have him in the forwards).

It's hard to think that after lusting after Ablett all year that now, given the situation where you can pick him up, you might pass it up??! He's still out in front for me. Chapman, Boyd, Hayes all have a strong case as well. I'm not considering NDS, too hot and cold for my liking.

Chapman - Could miss games but is awesome (+ DP)
Boyd - Consistent strong performer and most likely to play all games
Hayes - Can score unbelievably well but can miss as well.

Hard to know!

I don't like to harp on, however, is anyone else thinking that Joel Corey will rip it up for the rest of the year? He wont get rested, injury a concern but no one else will have him.

I don't have Montagna tho, midfield is Ablett, Swan(c), Judd, Cooney and Mitchell, with Trengove to swap with him this week and Jetta on the bench.

Corey has my interest, Montagna the obvious pick......or is it?

OK here goes I traded out Howlett out and just traded in M Banner ( to free up some cash and I already had a solid Emerg in Bastinac) Then Traded M Barlow :( out for D Swan:D:thumbsu: Still I really didn't want to trade out Barlow but I really need to win this round to get into the 8.

I have my pick of the mids for Barlow, but with having Ablett, Swan, Montagna, Boyd and Bartel already, im not sure who to pick. I am eyeing off Hayes, i don't think chappy is worth the risk, any soreness and he will be rested to make sure he is there and fit for finals.

Pendlebury? Judd? Goddard? a Few worth mentioning.

I'm seriously considering Gibbs. With Bower in the side I think Gibbs moves back to the midfield where we all know his point scoring capacity is very high.

Either him, Judd, Simpson or Chappy for me at the moment. So tough.

For me it's Ablett v Boyd v Gibbs v Judd

Ablett and Boyd are both guns who will get 100+ basically every week. The attraction of the latter two is that it gives me more money to upgrade a forward or two that need upgrading in a few weeks. This is really tough.

Not only do I have Barlow out but I also have Fyfe out for the week without any forward bench cover.

I have 6 trades left and very little cash in the bank.

So here's what I've been thinking:

Trade A:

Fyfe > McNeil
Barlow > Chapman

Then I would swap McNeil to the mids and Chapman into my forward line and put Banner into the midfield. I would keep Chapman in my forwards for two weeks until SJ came back and hope that Banner could keep his spot for that amount of time or that Gysberts could come back in. This would only leave me with 4 trades, which is a bit slim.

Trade B:

Barlow > Ablett

Then I would leave Fyfe for the week and cop a zero. The simplest one and means I get to stay with 5 trades.

Trade C:

Fyfe > Henderson
Barlow > Chapman/Ablett

Once again, I'm down to 4 trades but get to keep my mids at full strength and will probably maintain the same kind of score in my forwards with Henderson. Only problem is that I don't know how good Hendersons JS is.

I'm seriously considering Gibbs as well here. I'm "trade light" and "cash light" (only have 4 trades and $3300 ) so any trades for me need to be single, injury only trades.

Options:

1. Barlow to Boyd ... pretty much straight swap for what I consider the best available player that I can afford (have Ablett, Swan, Bartel, Montagna and can't afford Chappy).

2. Barlow to Gibbs ... gives me a player that could potentially average similar (even possibly more) than Boyd and frees up a valuable extra $38k for if any other injury trades require a small upgrade (particularly useful if a player gets injured early and scores poorly and drops $20-$30k as a result).

3. Barlow to Stanton ... much higher risk that I'll get less points overall but still has potential to average similar to Boyd and should free up enough cash to allow (for example) Brown to Riewoldt if Brown doesn't come back and Riewoldt gets back into form for DT finals.

Tough choice ... started the week leaning towards option 1, last 48 hours have been more option 3 but today really starting to think the middle ground of option 2 might be the go!

Any opinions??

Perhaps an option for you would be to "downgrade" Barlow to either Thompson or Stanton (still giving you a good midfielder abeit with considerably more risk of lower scores but potential for very high ones too) This would give you enough cash to upgrade to Fyfe to a fallen "premium" in the forwards - eg Pavlich, Gia or Goodes (not sure who you already have)

I already have Pav and Gia and don't rate Goodes this year. Besides, Fyfe is only starting because SJ is sitting on my bench. So, trading another premium in now will mean I will have a premium forward sitting on the bench in two weeks time.

1 for mine. Gibbs not far behind though.

Any thoughts on my question??

As for me, like many I am struggling to decide on Barlow's replacement. 8 trades, $7,800 in bank.

B: Goddard, Enright, Hodge, Gilbee, Carrazzo, Hunt, Kennelly (Davis & Webberley)
M: Ablett, Swan, Gibbs, Montagna, Murphy, Barlow (Rohan & Shuey)
R: Sandilands, NicNat (Trengove & Lobbe)
F: J Brown, ROK, Harvey, Franklin, Goodes, Hall, Rockliff (Fyfe & Roberts)

Options:
1) Barlow > Boyd (ave: 112)
2) Barlow > Bartel (ave: 108)
3) Barlow > Chappy (ave: 118)

Am also probably going to go Fyfe > TDL. Other midfield options include: Hayes (ave: 106), Pendles (ave: 104)...Simpson & Judd both probably too risky as I already Gibbs & Murphy in mids.

Any help much, much appreciated. :thumbsu:

If TDL is purely for cover i'd keep Fyfe, can produce decent scores playing midfield. The only reason he is out is because of his concussion, has cemented himself as best 18

What did everyone end up doing with Barlow?

I finally decided to get Boyd over Ablett, since I think Boyd's more likely to play the rest of the year, whilst Ablett should miss at least one round with a random injury. They should probably score similarly.

Also got rid of Dustin Martin for Joel Selwood, who looks to be coming home pretty strong.

GEELONG CATS v HAWTHORN
Geelong Cats
B: Josh Hunt, Matthew Scarlett, Andrew Mackie
HB: Corey Enright, Harry Taylor, David Wojcinski
C: James Kelly, Cameron Ling, Jimmy Bartel
HF: Paul Chapman, James Podsiadly, Travis Varcoe
F: Mathew Stokes, Tom Lonergan, Shannon Byrnes
Foll: Mark Blake, Joel Selwood, Gary Ablett
I/C: Mitch Duncan, Simon Hogan, Darren Milburn, Brad Ottens
Changes to the selected side
In: Hogan
Out: Joel Corey

That is quite humorous. Don't know why people got him anyway not exactly cheap and has been injured for ages. Someone like Simpson would've been better in my opinion.

Ended up getting Joey.

My midfield is now Swan, Montagna, Bartel, Hayes, Pendlebury and Selwood.

2 Cats, 2 Pies and 2 Saints :)
