Yes, if he wanted the Dees and only them.

Don't think he's heading back to North, so if 23 is the final offer then I'd expect North to cave.
North showed their hand by publically saying he can look for a new home

****ing stupid negotiation tactics on their behalf

Did you think his agent wasn't telling people that anyway or something?

Clubs don't base their negotiations on what the media is reporting. The statement was purely for North supporters given the rumours were going around anyway.

Either way I don't think this changes the situation that Brown can't return to the Roos now.

It puts a significant amount of pressure on the Roos to get the best offer they can. A player who can't secure a 3 year $750k deal with their team is not going to land a first rounder for their team usually.

(btw, I don't necessarily want him at Freo so it's not that I'm looking for us to get a 'cheap' deal)

I think it is a sad situation and I think there is probably more to the story than has been made public - I don't think it is solely down to contract terms/length.

However, Ramanauskas will have been speaking to other clubs for a while now to try and get Brown a good contract, especially after his error in judgement at the start of the year. I would expect part of this is downselling what it will take to get a trade done, which would mean he is probably telling other clubs that Brown returning to North isn't a viable option.

Hence, I'd be surprised if us releasing a statement would have any real impact on what we get in any trade - I think that was purely done for PR purposes, given Brown's popularity and the speculation which was already going around.

I think Ramanauskas is banking on Essendon to come in and recoup some of the money they would have gotten from North's original contract considering we'd have a lot of salary cap space.

Indeed. But I think that is more an indication of Shaw's talents as a coach than Brown's as a player.

It's not like we were a dominant side when he was kicking 60+ a year though.

Ben is the best in the business at what he does well but the argument that it's difficult to build a winning side around him as your main forward is not without merit. The best sides now generally have multiple avenues to goal and their key forwards can play multiple roles and defensively.

The problem North have is Brown kicked 8 goals from 9 games this year. They went from offering $750k x 3 to telling him to look for another club.

You can say he doesn’t fit Shaw’s style, but Brown is a limited styled player, which clubs style does he fit?

Clubs will be asking “Is Brown going to get back to his best?” I’m not sure North are going to get what they want.

Any team paying more than pick 20 is paying over’s for Brown. I’ve said for years that he flops and plays silly salmon for a free kick. Although he kicked 60+ 3 years in a row, means nothing. He doesn’t break packs, doesn’t tackle, too busy running 15km a game instead of playing as a true forward. Delivery has been poor from north mids, apart from that though, he doesn’t do enough as a modern day forward should. Doesn’t have the body strength one on one and always needs a clear path for a lead and to mark the pill at its highest point.

There should be quite a few clubs chasing Brown. Is a proven goal kicker who can hold down Full forward for the next 4-5 years.

Is worth late first Rounder for every club except Essendon, who consistently believe players are worth way more than market value (Daniher worth 2 first rounders and a gunnplayer, Saad & Fantasia worth top ten picks!).They can’t have it both ways..

Yeah but you dont need to build a winning side around him. He does his best work in combination with other forwards. If a coach cant find a role for a player like Brown he probably should be in a different job.

Don't really get the hate North are copping for how they handled it. How is their bargaining power any less than any other uncontracted player who nominates a club to join? It just fast tracked the position they would end up with regardless. Bombers aren't going to be in any stronger position with Saad
I think the difference is usually it’s an un-contracted player wanting to get to a new club.

In this case Brown wanted to stay at North but they told him to look elsewhere.

Essendon don’t want to lose Saad, they will demand he’s worth a lot to their team, they can even threaten to redraft him if he enters the draft.

Brown has been loyal to North, they told him to look at another club, when he picks a club I don’t think North will force him into the draft unless the trade offer is way too unreasonable.

The only club that will cough up a late first round pick is one that thinks its not far of a flag and a big forward is the missing link. When you wok through the list:

Pies - obvious need but cap issues and doubt they see Brown as the solution.
Tigers - no need unless Jack retires.
Cats - Nope, got Hawkins and after Cameron.
Lions - Nope, after Daniher
GWS - Maybe if Cameron leaves
West Coast - no, Darling and Kennedy and the young bloke (cant recall name)
Saints - no need, would get in the way of the development of King unless they think they need someone know.
Dogs - No, need height but down back and in the ruck.
Dees - Maybe
Port - no have Dixon and young blokes
Essendon - no where near a flag but deluded enough to think they are

So GWS, PIES and DEES seem the ones who bite. The rest of the AFL is in rebuild mode and unlikely to bite unless he is a cheap trade.

Hahahaha. Please look at Carlton's trade history. There's a reason why list managers believe Carlton are as difficult to trade with as Essendon.

"North Melbourne is prepared to entertain a trade for Ben Brown as the club continues to reshape its list, GM Football Brady Rawlings has confirmed."

“We will work with Ben and his management to secure a mutually beneficial outcome.

"Essendon Football Club can confirm Adam Saad has indicated his desire to be traded to the Carlton Football Club."

“Although we wish Adam all the best, he is not a free agent and therefore a suitable trade will need to be forthcoming from Carlton. Clearly, there is an expectation of compelling compensation for a player of Adam’s calibre."

The key differences in these two scenario's is that (1) Saad & Essendon have burnt ties, with Saad now selecting a club, (2) Dodoro carries himself like a f*** wit.

There is a media perception that North (under previous football department, not the current) will bring their own lube to the negotiation table, whilst Dodoro is some negotiation expert. This trickles through to shape public opinion of those who don't actually bother to read the facts.
