Do you struggle with the basics?

In 2020 the dons and lions worked it out to be $825per year that Daniher had to be paid to ensure band 1.

there has been increases since then including one just the other day that was 10% and which was backdated to the start of this season.

so.. work it out.
Danihers contract was 750k x 3

Did you read the article?

it discusses it.. but like I said.. there has been pay increases since then which has made the salary per year required for band 1 higher..
I did,

Can you show me where it says 750k for a 25 yr old wouldve just got band 1 in 2017?

Not even 30 players earned 800+ in 2017

I think they're feeding Ralph tbh. Creates the narrative that they're not going to overpay and when it is band one, it becomes a case of the AFL helping North out again etc.

A week ago the story was all three of Essendon, Hawthorn and Sydney had enough on the table to trigger band one.

It makes almost no sense for them to not trigger band one, especially if we're only talking $20-30k. For what purpose?

Well if you believe the Essendon/Stkilda conspiracy theory, (where Essendon wants to give Gresham band 1 in return for getting a FRP from the saints)

Then it seems that Essendon is trying to manipulate the AFL wanting to give North a band 1 pick at a lowball offer* so that keeps the cost of Greshams band 1 contract down.

The AFL already ruled that north don’t get access to Sanders (after teams complained they were being gifted 2x top 6 picks) so they almost have to give north band 1 at any reasonable deal

They tossed them 3 first rounders instead. On top of 2 picks last year. AFL owe them nothing.

1. Ralph wouldn't know the exact amount like he professes to

2. He wouldn't know the exact formula/amount that nets Band 1 - as no-one but the AFL does

3. It's awfully convenient that he can say this, this far out, and then be able to be like 'North won't get Band 1...oh wait Essendon have upped their offer...Essendon have now given North enough for Band 1'

It's the same BS every year. Argue the opposite, then feign surprise when the opposite happens - as you created the whole story. Shameless shit peddling merchants, lol.

Well, the obvious one is not getting pushed back in the draft order. There seems to be a bracket of about 8 more elite kids and a North PP would substantially impact Essendon’s selection.

Not saying it’s the be all and end all, but it does demonstrate how ****ing stupid PPs are that penalise every other club to help a club who can’t retain someone

I haven’t ventured onto the Essendon board, but surely a decent portion of their supporters are aghast at the thought of Ben fn McKay chewing up 800k of their cap?
Some, sure. But you gotta spend it somehow and I for one am sick of being slaughtered by the Hawkins and Walkers of the world. Have you seen our “key defenders” lately?

But if Essendon is not going to provide McKay with a salary that generates band 1 compo, then North will match, and the whole thing has just become a massive waste of everyone's time? All it will do is make Mckay's management hesitant to deal with the Bombers going forward?

will they though?

take it from me, having someone play for your club that doesn't want to be there is good for no one.

We tried that with daniher and lost out in the end.

And everything will be roses if McKay winds up back at North?

At the end of the day there is value to Essendon in NOT giving McKay a salary that provides North band 1 compensation. Outside of saving money, Essendon's pick slides down in the order. That pick slide has value. If I'm Essendon, I'm trying to milk that value from North - 'you help us, we'll help you'. That might come in the form of a side trade but that pick 3 comes at a cost to North in some capacity.

Yes, I'm aware that is tampering but we'd be naive to think this stuff doesn't happen.

McKay isnt going to stop that dude.

So the Roos will give 5 years to a guy who doesnt want to be there, at $800k a year?

Is this how you would do a rebuild ?

They wont match unless it ends up Band 3. Everyone knows it. Its a meaningless threat noone has believed from the beginning. Because Essendon would offer a pick in the 30s which is what he is worth.

Plenty of instances where it has worked out.

Precisely zero times when it has worked out when the player was a free agent, and I can't even think of one when the player was even out of contract.

We'd be struggling to meet the minimum TPP spend, $800k is neither here nor there.

It doesn't need to be 5 years. Just say "sorry your management buggered up, shouldn't have dealt with the bombers, here's a one year contract and I'm sure we can find a long-term home for you next year."

You realise McKay’s manager is a former Bomber?

He’s as likely to be hesitant to deal with the Bombers as Eddie McGuire is to never have an opinion on footy again.

You need to match the whole offer. These are the restricted free agency rules

Of course, but at the risk of North matching and you having to trade? You might keep your own pick in that scenario but you'd have to go and find a decent pick from somewhere.

I'd be pretty surprised if it's not band one and think this is just media management by Essendon. I am shamefully biased though.

Of course the AFL owes nothing and I'd prefer if they never gave out any priority or compensation picks to anyone. But they specifically designed free agency compensation so that teams down the bottom who lose players are better compensated - a Melbourne fan of all people should know that.

It would make little sense for North to not match if it's not band one as they would almost certainly be able to get better than an end of first round pick via a trade.

He'd be an unrestricted free agent (after the one year deal) at that point which would make it easy for him to move.
