Bendigo FL discussion 2023

Ventured to the QEO today to watch some finals footy.

You would honestly get a better atmosphere at a 6 quarter practice match in March.

Sandhurst going to choke Again by the looks. Not sure how many VFL listed players they will need to increase to next year if they let it slip again.

As for Square, hope they win it! Likeable side led by one of the BFL greats in Geary

The atmosphere has changed since the change rooms on the pool side came into use.

Spread supporters out too much I feel

Had this debunked by someone from the club today, Fresh.

Said he wanted too much money and they couldn’t find a compromise.
Will be the same reason he won’t play at Gisborne too, will want too much cash, they won’t pay it. He will I’ll mowed lok lu end up at East Keilor or Deer Park where they can’t count as far as the salary cap goes.

A really good point. A full QEO grandstand creates noise and atmosphere. Now supporters of the team using the change rooms on the Aquatic side of the ground tend to congregate in front of these rooms and the grandstand noise is greatly diluted. Exactly the same applied in last year's grand final when Gisborne (yes Gisborne) was playing Strath., Yesterday was a high standard entertaining game between two very good sides major league sides with some great passages of play so to you negative bleating boring endlessly moaning impossible to please knockers who never ever manage a single positive comment about anything on this forum why don't you just piss off and watch golf or marbles instead.

Interesting that Golden Square only used 24 of 40 player points so I cannot see how the points system will bring them back to the field.

Square will now rightly be the hot favourites but I don't think all is lost for the Dragons. If, they can get to the grand final and include the two Lachie's (Hood & Tardrew) and Joe Wharton into their line up I still think they could give it a shake. Eaglehawk and Strath with their best teams on the park are also very good teams and just as capable of an upset.

The comp is in great shape - 5 very good sides for the 2024 season and beyond - they could end up with just the top 2 playing off in a few years

You can look at most league’s around the state and it is the same 2 or 3 clubs playing finals every year. Not just BFL.
The very system that was given to country football to save it from itself has in fact done the complete opposite. Once down the lower end of the ladder the climb is unfortunately steeper than ever before.Clubs and leagues in all sorts. The Bendigo League is a shadow of its former self. Eaglehawk is its own borough, Square have been always strong, Strath its own suburb and Sandhurst have the school influence. Can someone can tell me where Sth Bendigo actually is? Flat have money but not the demographic to lure players.

The system started out ok but evolved into self defeating monster

I see the dream is still alive for the BFNL - EVERY SANDHURST SIDE COULD PLAY IN THE GRAND FINAL !!!

If the 8 teams make it their plan has come together perfectly

The Bendigo League is a shadow of its former self.

Watching both finals the thing that really stood out to me was the number of players still running around from 10 years or more ago.

There’s just not the talent coming through and tipping blokes out of sides anymore. Lachy Sharp is the best forward in the comp but if he had to play on himself from 6 years ago today’s version wouldn’t get a kick.

Having said that, Golden Square are a good side with good young talent and should win the flag from here, which is a credit to them when using so few points.

Forest…with the greatest of respect and I agree with you a bit. The young talent is dragged away from clubland so much easier than ever before. All clubs are beholden to NAB league and VFL programs to the detriment of our local footy. As such this time of year is about the only time you see the best players out there but they haven’t played with their teammates most of the year which has a huge impact.

Just on Sharpy. A modern day great of the league. Is he what he was. He will tell you himself that he is not but I will have him on my team every day if the week. Today showed his selflessness imo

15 posts mate and everyone single one of them negative or a snipe. Everything from the BFNL board to the Macedon raffle is bent! Not even one single comment on better players at a game you have watched.

How about you come out with something positive like Roota's comment about Sharpy. Alternatively tell us about the voluntary work you do to keep a club like Macedon or anyone else afloat.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not having a go at him, just saying the fact he is still able to be the best forward in the league while past his prime says a lot about the quality of the rest of the competition.

Albury, you are spot on about the points system not bringing a club like Square back to the field, after playing with 24 on Saturday. The ship has somewhat sailed in that being a major equalisation tool - this is no blight on Square at all - but given the little to no change each year over the past 5-7 years with points that clubs are allocated, it’s not been managed at a league or commission level well at all. They’ve had multiple chances year on year to do something and the longer they’ve left it, the worse it’s got.

To me the points system would work well if you set the margins more aggressively (as I posted before) and got rid of the discounts.

Losing a point every season a player is at a club kills it, the same team that wins a flag with 35 points might only cost 28 in round one the next season.

If you want a loyalty discount make it one point every 5 years, otherwise play at your actual value.

In WA, there are no discounts until the start of the fourth season to encourage loyalty. For example, a player picked up over this summer does not start shedding points until the 2027 season (at one point per season until they reach one).

Therefore a four point player picked up this summer only becomes one point from the start of the 2029 season.

Kyneton can look forward to local derbies with Macedon and woodend now

It it throws the cat amongst the pigeons regarding the same four clubs that have been dominating the rdfl for some time

I can’t see any negative from this move

Kyneton would be hot favourites to win the RDFNL premiership…. Huge gap in standards.

Fair enough, but I’m pretty comfortable with it.

As I hear it the timeline goes talks started last year when the juniors and women were going. Bit of a push to bring everyone was made but was felt no chance of getting it past AFL CV.

Preseason didn’t go great for the club, talks continued through this year, Kyneton liked the way things operated with the women and juniors and when it was clear no progress was made on the field it became irresistible.

Decision was made at end of June to put it to club with the recommendation of the committee to leave. Once the AFL CV stuff happened they took the chance to bring plans forward and do it before the season ended.

Re Gisborne I think the disappointment is that the clubs have worked to make Good Friday an event and had planned to try again this year after the league stopped them this season (which certainly didn’t help the chances of staying). Gisborne felt that relationship might have warranted a heads up they were leaving.

Good Friday has been played at Gisborne maybe twice in the last 10 years… It was nearly always at Kyneton.

I wouldn’t think they are hot Favourite- top 5 riddell teams would be competitive with Bendigo’s bottom 5 - much more even comp.

I’d still have diggers on top - they spend major $

They will be very competitive yes but I don’t think they’ll have it all their way. Teams like Diggers Riddell and probably Wallan will spend money to keep up with them. Hopefully all the teams in RDFL aim to be competitive against Kyneton as it only drives up the standard. Can’t wait!
