Bendigo FL discussion 2024

Tiered system will never work, community clubs wouldn't want too
Which in itself there is the problem. Things across the region will never improve if clubs themselves aren't prepared to embrace change.

Its all well and good to say "Heathcote clubs shouldn't prop up Bendigo" but problems with football aren't only in the Bendigo league. It's across the board.

And if everytime a change is suggested the clubs throw their hands up then nothing will change. And we'll all die a slow death.

Distance will be something that people will need to just come to terms with.

The netball side of things is a definite issue
Reality is you'll end up with the same netball as you do now. Some dominant teams and some not on their level.

But defeats the purpose of a tier system.

Maybe that’s why flat are having a meeting. What if they end up playing Cohuna / lockington / Kerang etc

Maybe Charlton merge with two other sides and they enter the bfl. Merged sides seem to have done okay, looking at Ouyen united and souther mallee thunder entering major leagues.

You only have to look at locky entering the bendigo league for reasons a tiered system won't work in country footy, they were pretty successful in the Northern echuca league, runner up by a point, played finals the first year, then spent up big on Ian fairly and a few of he's mates for it to be a disaster, but it created a real disconnect between juniors and seniors which is what makes these clubs where they have been far more successful going to the hdfl where they retained juniors and went back to a community club atmosphere

At the time the gap between Northern and Echuca and Bendigo was huge.

It'd be like a hypothetical tier 3 club jumping into tier 1 which doesn't happen in a tiered system.

The more and more I look at it, any Central Victorian revamp should exclude Heathcote and concentrate on Bendigo, Loddon Valley and North Central - the three leagues that have the most issues.

How long do people expect the Loddon Valley league to last, considering the fact that North Central clubs have already read the room and future prospects and two of them have committed to a merger to with the Calder United Lions starting next year and I would expect the presidents at other clubs to at least be sharing a coffee to compare notes about what the future could have in store.

The lack of juniors would surely test the future of LV clubs to be around even five years from now. Once the older players are forced into retirement who are going to replace them. Having the East Loddon colts team is probably a precursor to those senior clubs doing the same.

Travel for volunteers / recruits from melb hate it and they need them to compete

Volunteers absolutely that is the big concern.

As for recruits from Melbourne…..I’d love to count how many blokes travel up past Bendigo up to the northern parts of the state to play every Saturday. Lots and lots and lots and lots. Christ blokes come from interstate

All jokes aside - with 32 home and away matches remaining, how many of these games will players travelling to ground, on the Saturday morning think there is a chance they could be win or lose that game.

Are we worried about a max exodus of the good players who still remain unless something is done, or the inflated yellow envolopes players are getting these days they don’t care if they win by 200 or lose by 200?

129 kms from castlemaine to Charlton. Have you ever ventured outside the bfl before????

Just think of what hay have been doing for 40 years to play footy. Echuca to mansfield. Bairnsdale to.wonthaggi, this travel to play footy isn't something new.

Loddon Valley and Golden rivers may merge. Marong and maiden gully leave, newbridge possibly to mcdfl. Calivil, miti and serp surely will merge shortly. I think the calder team are setting themselves well with their name to get other teams, I'd think.charlton would be logical. Then they have enough juniors and could go bendigo or central murray. If there is bendigo left.

In WA's East Kimberley Football League:

Kurrurrungu Roos (Billiluna) to Kununurra - 531km (10hrs) each way, much of it on corrugated roads.

Buth the winner is Kurrurrungu Roos to Timber Creek - 757km (13hrs) each way, including a border crossing into the Northern Territory and an overnight stay. Luckily for the Roos, Timber Creek disbanded a few years ago.

Just interesting they went to Strath instead of Castlemaine or Sunbury Lions if it was just about testing themselves.

Just had a look at the names - All it would have taken one message from a Strath Official letting the parents know they think there son is a chance of playing AFL if they come to Strath and the parents would have had them on the first vline to Strath.

Smart Tatics by Strath -but again parents getting sucked in thinking there kids the next Harley Reid. Not one of them would be close to getting a game in Straths seniors in the next 4 years unless they have 20 walk out over Preseason
You are so far of the mark here it is not funny… Strath have promised nothing more than an 18s spot. 2 of the kids who came were not enjoying their footy with Kyneton so chose to go to Strath. One kid was used purely as a ruckman for Kyneton and played no where else he’s isn’t a ruckman and won’t be when he transitions to senior football.
If grasping at straws about things you have no idea about is how this forum goes then holy crap what a waste of time.

Are the kids that moved on the Pioneer’s list?
Also there are plenty of clubs they could have went to closer to Kyneton than Strath - including several in the Bendigo league.

1 is but I wouldn’t think he will play any games for them. People are free to choose whichever club they wish doesn’t have to be the closest. I could choose to play an hour away for Maryborough if I wanted. Clearly Strath must have been the most appealing option or actually reached out and spoke to the kids any club could have done that.

So hang on - Strath did reach out to these kids?

I thought you just said they turned up because they weren’t happy at Kyneton?

And looking at ladder positions, it’s safe to assume they haven’t randomly chosen the most appealing club if there looking at success this year?
