Yep, pretty much nailed it IMHO gbatman. I reckon buckley has the explosive speed (and power you get from that) to mix it with blokes who are heavier than him through the middle, but am more keen to see him work in tandem with Yarran/Simpson/Boekhorst/Rainbow/Sheehan and the like from the back line. He can't be playing on a 6'2 jumping forward, but anyone below that who is primarily a crumbing player should be a fine matchup for the kid. I'd back him to beat those a bit taller and heavier!
The kid is a gem, early on I really questioned wether he was going to be a player we needed after having Eddie, Garlett and Yaz up fwd, or not just a player we needed, a regular player at all... I'm stoked to see his progression and loving the way he goes about it, where the hell are all the other father/sons... I gotta admit, we are probably the worst in that department!

With guys like Rainbow and Sheehan pushing for selection I wonder if we might see Buckley forward or even the midfield this year..
gonna put my hand up an say I'm a non buckley fan an not just the Collingwood one ha.. ifeel he hasn't got that something to make it to the next level (speed aside)... I'd rather throw in the new boys, sheehan,Holman, giles ahead of him but of course that's imo an I'm wrong a lot haha

So he's refreshingly exciting attacking intent, tackling prowess and good use of the football doesn't count as "that something". And yet you'd put Holman and Sheehan, who have barely played 5 games between them and showed less of "that something" and Giles who hasn't played at senior level yet (both VFL and AFL) due to injury above Buckley? Logic.

Short memory. Buckley was the only positive thing in the first month of footy last year.

In his favour he has speed, quality disposal, hardness and desire. Certainly looked more comfortable when he moved to defence, found it a lot easier to win the ball and read the play which is what happened with Yarran in 2011 but I wonder with Buckley whether his lack of size and height will lead opponents to just take him close to goal and expose him in marking contests. Andrew Walker was found out with a similar tactic late in 2010 after some amazing early season form. What I'd look at doing with Buckley is having another (hopefully) full season in defence before moving to a wing where he won't have to worry about being out-marked in the square.

He seems a lovely lighthearted lad, but gets his game face on when he crosses the white line. Needs-wise, if we could turn him into a Ballantyne-esque defensive forward we'd be set. Although his dash off the backline is where he's clearly shown most so far. Too nice a bloke to be like Ballantyne anyway. Maybe Clem can fill that role. Grrr.

I'm still not sure where Clem fits in, as in position... He looks okay on the highlights package but doesn't get me anywhere near excited as Dvr does, imagine that, Birchall and Suckling in 1, I hope!!

he is almost 22 an has showed only a good month of footy due to many reasons... I can't see him making it in the guts or wing just my view,
does he really have quality disposal? seems I'm hating on him but just can't see a spot for him in the team going forward with what I've seen...

Someone his height, speed, will and skill-set did O.K. some years back.............Sydney's captain, Paul Kelly.

It's a very different time now but Dylan will get stronger and smarter as he goes along, given his will and attitude. He'll be fine.

Comparing Dylan to an A-Grade champion of the past is unfair to Dylan. Paul Kelly was Elite with a capital E.

Not when Kelly was 21 years old. Kelly only started playing at the age Dylan is now.

Buckley has similar features to Kelly.....height....speed....courage etc..............that's all...........who said anything more?

I guess I'm just not a big fan of pumping up the tires of young players just because they're young. Plus speed and courage weren't the only attributes that Paul Kelly possessed that made him elite.

Here is my new take on our best 22 for 2015.

B: Kristian Jacksch, Michael Jamison, Dylan Buckley

HB: Blaine Boekhorst, Sam Rowe, Kade Simpson

C: Sam Docherty, Chris Judd, Chris Yarran

HF: Dale Thomas, Lachie Henderson, Andrew Walker

F: Troy Menzel, Liam Jones, Levi Casboult

RK: Matthew Kreuzer, Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy

INT: Ed Curnow, Mark Whiley, Andrejs Everitt, Dillon Viojo-Rainbow

EMG: Patrick Cripps, Andrew Carrazzo, Simon White

Defensive Selections – Explained:
Jamison & Rowe: These two pick themselves. Clearly our two best defensive options.

Jacksch: This selection was a toss of the coin between him and Simon White as to who starts as our third tall. I could understand people making a case either way. White is obviously ahead in development but Jacksch is entering his third year at AFL level and is ready to be given an extended exposure to senior level.

Buckley: I have given him the job as our small shut-down defender. He may not be as physically capable in one-on-one aerial contests as Tuohy or Sheehan but I still think he gets first crack. Hopefully he can be damaging with ball in hand and make his opponent accountable.

Simpson & Boekhorst: Our two rebounding defenders. Boekhorst with his pace and clean ball use and Simpson with his experience, courage, and leadership. These two can make things happen and set up the play coming out of the backline. They will allow us to mive the ball quickly from one end of the ground to the other (See Port’s success at being number one in the AFL for quickest defence to forward fifty ball movement). They also allow Docherty and Yarran to move further up the ground where they can be damaging.

Rucks Selections – Explained:
Kreuzer: Best suited to being a ruck who occasionally goes forward. Adds midfield like capabilities around the stoppages without being an amazing tap ruckman. A mile ahead of Warnock and Wood.

Gibbs & Murphy: Our best stoppage players (excluding an ageing Judd). These two will spend time resting up forward at times too, but they need to be right in the guts most of the time.

Midfield Selections – Explained:
Judd: Still too good to be left out of the midfield. Will be used in the midfield and up forward. We no longer need to rely on the great man to carry this team and the beautiful thing is that we now have options to rotate without significantly worsening the team.

Yarran & Dochery: These two can be attacking weapons for us on the wing. Would be a nightmare for opponents to match up on these two because of their polish, speed, and run-and-carry type tendencies. Hopefully they can hit the scoreboard. May swap with Simpson, Thomas, Boekhorst, and Viojo-Rainbow at times.

Forward Selections – Explained:
Henderson: Our CHF. Enough said.

Jones: All reports are that he will be leading out of the goal square for the Blues in 2015. Needs to grab this second chance and provide defensive pressure or could find himself out of the team for Watson, White, or even Foster.

Casboult: Dangerous third tall with a high tank. Looks to have slimmed down and can run further up the ground this year. Could be set for a big year.

Menzel: So much class around goals. Will get some midfield minutes but majority of time will be up forward. Look forward to seeing continued improvement from him this year.

Thomas: A fit Daisy will be HUGE for us this year. Will start up forward I believe, but I can see him getting plenty of midfield minutes this year.

Walker: We have enough defensive options now to allow Walker to move up forward where he is capable of 40+ goal seasons. May still go back at times.

Bench – Explained:
Curnow: Lion-hearted. Great tagger. Great team player. Ahead of Carrazzo now because of durability and age. Butchers the ball a bit which does hurt us and has no penetration on his kick, but he still holds a spot at least for 2015.

Whiley: Physically ready to play significant minutes in 2015. More developed than Cripps and more talented than Bell and Graham. Also can do some tagging jobs if called upon (See his job on Pendlebury) which separates him from other bench options.

Everitt: Massively underrated. Can play virtually anywhere on the ground and even do some tagging roles. I like him up forward best. See the St. Kilda game last year as an example of how damaging he can be pushing forward.

Viojo-Rainbow: Adds flexibility to this team. Can spend some minutes on the wing or as a rebounding defender and has nice but not exceptional pace.

Final Thoughts:
This is a balanced team of ball winning types that can give us first use (Murphy, Gibbs, Judd, Curnow, Whiley) with outside run, carry, and pace that can hit the scoreboard and hurt teams (Yarran, Docherty, Thomas, Simpson, Boekhorst, Walker, Viojo-Rainbow). The team as a whole has a nice blend of experience, leadership, and exciting youth. Down back we have experience with a hint of youth that is exciting. Up forward we have some legitimate height for the first time in ages with some dangerous third tall types. It’s hard not to like the upside of this team. A few players stiff to not make this team include: White, Carrazzo, Tuohy, Sheehan, Tutt, Graham, Bell, Dick, and Watson.

Great team I have it pretty much the same but would prob have Cripps in there somewhere. I like the back six but wouldn't be surprised if Yarren and Boekhorst swap.

He has the 3rd highest disposal efficiency in the team, around 80%.

How people could have Jaksch ahead of White bewilders me. White has been super unlucky over the journey with injuries, finally put a full season together last year and hes going to be a menace this year! Him, Jamison and Rowe were a great combo and if not for the mids turning the ball over and us getting revounded on they would have looked a ton better. Hopefully with Kreuzer and Thomas coming into the mid we will start to see those turnover and rebound numbers decline.

Carrazzo as an emergency also surprises me. Fit and firing this guy is a leader and takes the opposition best mid. Granted his disposals isnt the best, but this his secondary role and he does the first stuff in spades. None of these draftees or traded players are playing in our best 22 straight up except maybe Boekhorst out of necessity. The rest of them we need a chance to see them perform in the magoos and if an injury occurs the best performing player will get their spot.

The idea here is you have your core 22 and you get an injury here or there and you replace them with a player who knows that role and has been trained on the role so it doesnt look like anything has happened to the team structure. We couldnt have structure last year because we had so many injuries plus players not playing their roles meaning players and couldnt depend on them doing what they needed to do, which as a knock on effect.

Jaksch is our depth KPD. Watson our KPF depth. Warnock, Woods our ruck depth. Whiley is depth for Carrazzo and Curnow etc etc.

We wont do well this year with just our best 22, itll be the next players coming in to fill rolls that will determine where wemfind ourselves onthe ladder come end of season. You arent as good as your top 6 players on the day as they say, but rather your bottom 6 players.

Great post 3B. I really can't fault your logic, or your selections.

I suspect a few of the old names might be hard to displace unless the new guys start killing it in the VFL e.g. Carrazzo, White, Tuohey, (even Bell) and that's a good thing. However, I'm with you for playing the younger boys with more upside. The Blues need to be getting games into these types of players if they are ever going to threaten the top 4. Carlton really needs to lift their performance threshold so their best is at or above the best of the top teams. It's not enough to rely on a top 4 side having a bad day in order to win. Without this performance potential they lack the ability to put other sides away when they have the ascendancy in games, and also they lose the close ones too often because the better sides will find another gear when games are up for grabs.

I also really like your selection of players that can get the ball. This skill is a highly underrated in my view because it allows the Blues to play the game more on their terms and it also helps with their consistency from week to week.

Like I said, White is stiff not to make the team I picked. Realistically he will probably be in our team in round 1. However, we didn't trade in Jacksch (a top 15 draft pick with two years development) to be a depth KPD. He has far more talent and upside than White who is simply a player with limited skills who gives his all each week. We can't ask more of White because in reality he won't get much better. He's a handy player but he should be our depth. Just my opinion though.

I just found out I'm travelling for work and will miss the intra game and most of pre season and regular season games...:( Anybody know a good way of committing suicide but no pain??

Watch a Carlton 4th quarter. They're leading me to a quicker death. Actually, scrap that idea.. they also cause a great deal of pain!
