Best 22 - 2016

A lot of these best 22s are making me smile. No Macaffer, White, Blair, Goldsack, Toovey.

If we can play without those guys every week it's a great indication of how strongly our young core group are coming on!

I quietly hope before long and maybe as soon as the NAN Cup/Challenge that Tom Phillips works his way into some best 22s.

Broomhead seems to be the forgotten man.

Is in my best 22.

Looked great when he was fit. Hope he can nail a best 22 spot this year.

Caff is the forgotten man. Can fill a couple of roles. Was effective as a tagger, but can also go forward and slot a couple if needed.

Would be on the fringe of my best 22.

B: Tom Langdon ~ Nathan Brown ~ Marley Williams
HB: Travis Varcoe ~ Ben Reid ~ Brayden Maynard

C: Steele Sidebottom ~ Taylor Adams ~ Jack Crisp
R: Brodie Grundy ~ Scott Pendlebury ~ Adam Treloar

HF: Alex Fasolo ~ Travis Cloke ~ Dane Swan
F: Darcy Moore ~ Jarrod Witts ~ Jamie Elliott

I/C: Jordan De Goey ~ Jeremy Howe ~ James Aish ~ Levi Greenwood

Not a bad looking team.....the only real change I'd make is White in for Witts.
Otherwise the only other possible change would be to bring in another defender, whether that be Toovey or Marsh for maybe Fasolo.

I will be very surprised if Blair and Toovey are not regular players in 2016.

My personal feeling is that Broomhead will overtake Blair and Fasolo this year as he represents a combination option of the best of the other two. Fasolo has great skills but he is a lead up option not a crumber and I'm not convinced of this ability to generate assists, hard ball gets and defensive pressure .

It will be interesting to see how the forward line functions this year and how efficient our ball use is. You need to be scoring goals from turnovers (which means efficient use of the ball i.e. disposal effectiveness) and set shots - I don't think we had either the game plan or the cattle ready to keep the ball and score effectively.

Our main strength leading into 2016 is at the contest creating the turnover but we aren't so strong on conversion - I'm not sure the big bombs from Travis wheeling around on the wing are what the game needs anymore. Get the ball, keep the ball and convert. We are awesome at phase 1, bit of work to do on the next two bits. According to Hawthorn that seems to be how you win three in a row.

Sinclair, Broomhead, Frost, Ramsey, and White don't get a game.

I see better options personally.

Up forward Elliott, Howe, Fasolo, Broomhead and Phillips in my view are all better and that's before taking into account our midfield rotation of which several will be required to play forward at any given time. So I no longer see any need for Blair to play any games.

Down back Toovey can still get his games and Scharenberg's injury helps, but Williams, Maynard, Langdon, Aish, Varcoe may rotate back at times and Marsh if we want to play him as more a third tall are guys I'd prefer to played ahead of Toovey unless he recaptures his 2011-start of 2013 form which given he is ageing and his athleticism is such a requirement given his role to be effective he isn't someone I'd look at as a "must play" anymore.

It shows the changing of the guard, not to dissimilar to 2010 and if these young guys can take the senior spots we are on the way to being successful again.

I haven't seen much of Phillips, hopefully the high regard you have for him can translate into him becoming a senior footballer.

I wouldn't. They both played VFL games last season for the first time in years when Marsh, Maynard, De Goey, Broomhead etc started to outperform them. Because they have no improvement left they will only play more VFL games in 2016 and be used as depth.

Really? Because he improved his defensive pressure quite a bit last year and is quite good in tight. I think Elliott has to improve in those areas.

Just on the bolded, he was 5th in the league for average goal assists per game. Also here's a quote from his player profile in the Collingwood Yearbook "Always been a strong mark, his work below the knees began to shine, such that he was ranked just outside top 10 in the competition for ground level effectiveness inside the forward 50." I think he has a pretty decent crumbing ability, he's been just been playing more of a marking forward role. His spot in the team is definitely under pressure (like a lot of players are).

I am not so optimistic on Broomhead. I think both Blair and Fasolo will play ahead of Broomhead in 2016. Broomy will be hurt by the return of Greenwood and the addition of Treloar, Aish and Howe over the off season. Unless he steps up a bit I see him as a depth player in 2016. He will get games if we have injuries but will otherwise play a lot of VFL footy.

Hoping that's the case - it will mean that others have pushed them aside with better form, which is what's needed for us to move up the ladder.

I'm surprised Howe is in practically everyones best 22. I didn't rate him too highly at melbourne, personally id rather have caff play forward but i would play howe before Fasolo.

I don't rate Howe either but we paid a big price for him so the club obviously thinks he's best 22.

Not sure how you can rate Caff as a forward above either Fasolo or Howe. His highest goal tall was 16 and that was back in 2010 and he's never averaged over a goal a game in any season.

i think i just like caff so hope he gets games and his time in the midfield is done - could be wishful thinking.
