Why would we swing Battle forward? We know Sicily forward will work … and we need our new backline to gel. Terrible idea imo
Probably because he can play that position, was a champion forward during his junior years, doesn’t disrupt our current defensive set up, has a lot more size than Sicily. You don’t actively chase hard and pay big bucks for a HBF. I’m sure roughy and the recruiting team have bigger plans for him. I’m very excited to see what he can bring to the team.

Oh get that he can swing forward and has - but I think consolidating the new backline set up is important and I’m pretty sure we have brought him over principally to play in defence

Interesting take on Battle, then my thoughts run to Sam wants flexibility within the game day list. Sicily, Hardwick, Battle, Weddle can all swing forward.

Sorry Jed, I think this year it’s more about “win games” than “play kid”

Flag Year!
I think this year there is no difference between any of the players on the list. Every player will be picked purely on form/team balance, their age won't be a factor at all.

Of course that also means that players like Gunners and Bruest won't be picked based on past reputation, they will have to be earn their spots like everyone else.

As you say maxi the flag race is wide open next year and we are a good as chance as anyone so we will go full throttle at it.

Ridiculous, play the younger players that need time. Gunston and Bruest now depth!!
Eh?

Don't play anyone who 'needs time'.

We're in the window...Play the best 22.

If that is Gunners and Breust, they play. If is isn't, they don't.

If the choice is out of say the Wiz or Punky, with both playing comparable footy, surely you go with the Wiz.
I certainly wouldn't put Wiz in the group of youngsters who 'needs time'.

I think everyone would agree he is best 22 unless injured.

This.
Eldo exactly on point. The days of giving kids gametime are gone, our time is now and we field the best team we can to win that particular game.

No offence to Punky who has been a star for our club but at this stage of their careers it's pretty obvious Wiz is picked over Punky every day of the week (nothing to do with development the Wiz is just better).

Wiz not young enough?
Dear v Gunston? If both playing equally as good, surely Dear gets the nod.
I really don't understand your reaction.

Do you have an issue with my suggestion that we play the best 22 to win every game, whoever that is?

Best 22 is not clear cut, if two players (Wiz v Punky) are vying for the same position and playing similar footy. Surely Wiz is given the go ahead. Not that hard to comprehend.

It's never just one or the other, you pick a team. If Breust is playing at a level that will help us win finals, then he isn't depth. Regardless of what we do with Wiz.

Yep, It’s weird, you pick a balanced and versatile side to win a game. Not Dear v Gunston or Wiz v Breust.

Oh, I comprehend what you're saying.

I just think it's a very simplistic way of looking at it; the idea that the selection committee would ever say "well, Gunston and Dear are basically the same, or playing similar,...so we really just need to go with the younger one" is such a ridiculous idea, you really should have thought about your comment.

They are not two identical pieces of cast iron, so you just go with the one with less metal fatigue.

They have multiple intangible qualities, both permanent, like knowledge of running patterns, skill, speed, physical build, aggression, footy IQ, etc etc...and temporary, like form, fatigue, confidence, injury, etc etc...

Then there is the opposition match-ups, and opposition style.

You evaluate what is needed, and choose your 22

The idea that you pair players as somehow identical on EVERY RELEVANT TRAIT (Wiz, Breust??? What?) and then come to the conclusion that they somehow offer identical properties to your chances of a win, and then say, "well, I guess the younger one must be the better option"...I can guarantee it has NEVER been said in any match-committee looking to win every week.

They look at ALL the qualitative factors, and make a decision on the best 22 to win the game.

Not that hard to comprehend.

My thoughts exactly! Sam has been preparing players to play multiple roles, depending on the state of the game, conditions and venues. It is all about depth in numbers and the ability to come into the side and fulfil a role effectively when the need arises. This can be seen when you try to pick our best 22 for round zero. Just look at the available players for spots but don't get the nod. In my opinion, having this level of flexibility is crucial in a long season especially if you are seriously looking to the big dance.

Harry Morrison- always the bridesmaid never the bride in here;

My best 22

Backs: Harry Morrison. The chap with the blond hair. The wearer of the No.1 guernsey

Half back: The fellow who stood up against port in the semi. The lad with the initials H M. Ken Judges god child.

Centre line: Ex Bushrangers star. The fair haired guy who runs all day. H-Mo

Half forward: Mr reliable aka Hazza. The bloke who played 12 solid games last years. The player whose DOB is 12/12/98

Forward: Mr versatile who can play multiple roles. The lad played his 100th game this season. AFL rising star nominee 2018

Rucks: Lloyd Meek. The chap who share the same name as an actor in Doc Martin. The Cousin of Tom Rockliff.

Interchange. The man who looks like a skeg head. Pick No.74 2016. The keen fisherman. Good friend of Mitch Lewis from the same draft.

Look forward to watching the blue eyed boy run in round 0 and once again prove all the naysayers wrong.

I want to see both Sic and Weds playing Significant time forward this year. The X Factor targets next to a big or two and our gun mosquito fleet seems a great balance.
